"Dr Bones" posts some really good medical articles specific to preppers that are well worth reading. Great link

Also, at least in our neck of the woods (Finland), the base stations for the mobile systems have a power back up supply of about 3 hours.  So if one is relying on the wireless systems ALL communications (and internet) are lost after about 3 hours.   Recent storms have highlighted the problem of people being unable to contact emergency services.

ps. our small community has had good supplies of electricity (I think some cables have been buried, and elsewhere trees cleared from near overhead cables), but I have a friend in another rural area where a storm could knock out there power for 3 to 5 days (and they expect at least one long power cut a year).

I heard Frosted Flakes were the hardest of the cereals to track. Rice Krispies are easy because they're noisy.
Sorry... LOL

Well, in the latest abysmal news out of Alberta, Bloomberg reports that food bank use and crime are now soaring amid the protracted slide in crude. "Calgary’s unemployment rate rose to 6.9 percent in November from 4.6 percent a year earlier, Statistics Canada data show, as 21,100 more were put out of work," Bloomberg writes. "Home sales have fallen 21 percent this year as the average price skidded 2.6 percent, according to the Calgary Real Estate Board."

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-12-23/canadas-depression-surging-crime-soaring-suicides-overwhelmed-food-banks-and-worst-y

REALLY??  These folks are complaining about this??   Unemployment up to 6.9%, housing prices "skid" by 2.6%...!!  Cry

Come and visit Chicago....

OMG did you see more of those prices? $31 for a bottle of Tide, $8.19 for a dozen eggs. $11.99 for a pack of bacon, $18.99 for a bottle of black pepper. This is why we prep.

Something all Preppers should be aware of a TV series called "THE COLONY" it's 2 seasons with 10 episodes in each season, this is serious stuff one person on the show died so season 3 is currently on hold.

All participants had to sign a legal document acknowledging the risks to their health and safety as it will not be guaranteed by the TV producers that's the whole point of the show.

It's all about gathering highly intelligent people with different technical expertise and leaving them in an abandoned warehouse full of scrap, letting their survival instincts kick in as they pool their skills together to survive after a apocalyptic event, it's full of useful ideas how to build generators, water purifiers straight from scap laying around in the aftermath of a apocalyptic event.

I've only watched a few episodes while they tend to skip a lot of practical problems for example surges from starting motors in power tools and electronic starters in florescent lights will cause surge problems for inverters which is not discussed, building a generator making the fuel source and how to setup a grid system with car batteries including a homemade battery charger ect is discussed in some detail, the overall rough ideas are sound and its definitely worth viewing, you should be able to download it from the torrent sites.

Ok, I'm in Canada - Alberta and those prices are out to lunch! We have definitely had price increases (due to our dollar conversion rate, CA drought, drought here too etc) but a lot of the prices quoeted are in like Nunavut - ie. Timbuck3! lol

Here as all the news stories were showing $8 cauliflower - Coop grocery had them on sale for $3... and yes, they sold out fairly quickly.

I am on an extremely restricted budget so with costs rising as much as they have, I'm slowly turning into a vegetarian (beef here is a totally ridiculous price $5/lb for hamburger and we are the cattle raising province of the country!!!) and I'm watching flyers for any REAL sales and try to get what I can. But prepping when this broke is really incredibly hard!

I think we should have a trash section on this site. This will be a huge problem. I am looking into a composter have several I am considering so that is where I will put hopefully very little leftover food...need to eat every scrap. I will burn paper products in my enclosed fireplace insert, do not suggest open fires because can burn down the neighborhood!

Reuse everything I can but really we need to make this a section on this forum.
