Every can of food, bag of rice, camping equipment or first aid equipment, ect.. you put by for preps means security in any emergency.
There are many people here on this board that have been preping for a long time, there are also newbies and also a lot of people who have limited amount of money. If you buy items you are going to use and a long shelf life you are on to a winner. I have been buying a couple of extras each week that is stashed away for the just in case, |

I have quite a nice stockpile at this point, but even today after reading the board this morning I still felt I needed a bit more and bought another 20 pounds of dried pinto beans, 3 lbs more pasta, a few more canned items like tamales, beefaroni that type thing. I just woke up this morning feeling a bit uneasy. I am going to start adding a little more every time I go to the store again, I have been just using some of my stockpile and not replenishing, but not anymore.

I know I just cant figure how much I will need without being totally ridiculous...I did get the ziplock bags and vacuum thing...it works ok...should I get minute rice or plain rice? Minute rice wouldnt take as long to cook...I also checked out that site someone else recommended...I want to get some of he fuel....I do not have alot of water storage though...its really hard to store!! And trying to keep all this stuff hidden is a chore too!!! My husband is going to kill me if I dont quit....but it makes me feel better!!

I did not buy huge amounts of rice, I think I only have about 25 pounds, maybe a bit more. I was going to cook mine in a solar oven (I had a link and plans somehwere to www.solarcooking.org shows you how to build several. I tried the car sunshade one, very simple and works well. You can always heat canned items using candles and a fondue pot (I found one at a yard sale for a $1 and chafing dishes, found one also for $1 at t thrift store. The only cooking type fuel I have is some stuff in a can like sterno, again used to heat. Anything larger we will use charcoal in the grill, but only plan to use the grill method at the begininng when people will still have plenty of food and not have run out yet, will move to the other cooking methods later if there is no electricity. Water is my big storage problem also. We do have a pool which holds 12,000 gallons and I keep open year round, but for drinking I got several of the big water jugs (actually goes into a cooler which we don't have, Sparklets, Culliga, etc) 10 of them from my recyclying center for free, I just asked for them and they gave them to me. I also have some 50 gallon rain barrels and some rinsed out empty soda 2-liters. I will wait to fill them at the start of anything. I don't have to hide anything in my house, hubby and child are on board as long as they don't have to do anything, except carry groceries. Hubby is all for a generator now since we had the ice storm and were without electricity for awhil, so I will look into that in the next couple of weeks.

You know I am already buying 2 liter bottles of coke so I can refill the bottles...I think I will try to find some larger containers...what is the difference in trash cans and rain barrels? I have some bleach but not enough...Im realizing I need to get rid of stuff I dont need or want to make room for the stuff I do!!

I am making sure for my water storage that the containers are "food grade" safe to drink from, some other plastics and metals can leach contaminants into the water. My rain barrels are"food grade" so with some added bleach they will be safe to drink/store when the time comes. My rain barrels also have a spigot at the bottom so you can get the water out easily. The larger water bottles, the Culligan and Sparkletts I have are going to be heavy, my husband is going to have to deal with those. Do NOT use milk containers as they break down and your water will leak eventually as they are biodegradable, even though they are food grade, they would only be good for a very short period of time.

You could use these type containers if you get some "food grade" plastic liners. I am not sure if restaurant supply places sell those and not sure how much they are. Definately seems like a cheaper solution as long as you have a place to store these. Anybody know about the food grade liners?

You know on an earlier post I talked about candles being cheap after Christmas....well...year after year I have always been able to find them..not this year!!! Not a candle in site...In a way that was scary in another way it was comforting to know that there are others that are prepping.

Penham, I am not sure what type of liners you are interested in I have 6 - 55 gallon drums for water and bought liners for them. I hope this link helps.
