I thought it might be useful for parents of younger children to have some ideas for things to prep, besides the normal food, water and childrens meds. Here are a few things I have on hand for my 3 year old, just in case.

Clothes next size up (both winter and summer)
Shoes 1 and 2 sizes too big.
Special gift - birthday present
Cake mix/frosting/candles
A few new games/toys

If your child is still in diapers, by all means stock up on as many as you can afford, but don't forget to buy some underwear and a potty seat.

Anyway, those are just a few things I have thought of. Any other ideas out there?

Susan

A couple other things... Even though my son doen't need baby food anymore, I still keep baby food in my preps. It will be the closest thing to fresh fruit and vegetables, and some of it isn't too bad. My son actually LOVES the "mixed berries and bananas", and would rather have that than candy. It has a year+ expiration date, so I stocked loads of it and rotate often. Sweet potatoes with Apples is another favorite, and loaded with Vitamins. Make sure you look at the exp dates though.

I also bought extra crayons, coloring books, chalk, bubbles, flashcards, playdough, art supples, beginner books, candy, and chewing gum.

Good topic, SusanT - Art supplies (all ages) Susan's list plus glue, pipecleaners, googly eyes, craft sticks, tempura paint, pompoms, string, yarn, construction paper.

For older kids - beading kits, lanyards, paint by numbers, model cars, water colors, puzzle books, suduko, erector sets, legos, sketch pad/how to sketch books.  SIP might be a good time to take up a new hobby.  Books in a series

For school - local school forms for homeschooling (in case you want to pull your kids out before they announce schools close).  In Ga you can pull your child out at any time but have to file a "Declaration of Intent to Homeschool" form within 30 days (and by Sept 1 the next year).  Monthly, we send in an attendance report.  Your county education office should be able to send you these.

As a homeschooler, I plan to go ahead and go ahead and get my kid's next year curriculum.

Here's a playdough recipe:   1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
2 tablespoon oil
2 tablespoon cream of tartar
Food coloring (for different colors)

For Homemade slime - water and cornstartch.

I want everything to be as "normal" as possible for my family considering the circumstances.  I have already purchased:

Birthday presents ( a few)

Cake mixes & canned frosting for everyone's birthday

Christmas presents (3 or 4 items so far)

Arts & crafts activities

Puzzles

Games

Books (we pick these up from book sales, thrift stores and yard sales all year)

Clothing (next 2 sizes up, some new in the off season when new clothing goes to $1 & $2 each and get alot at yard sales and thrift stores too)

Shoes (next 2 sizes up I buy when I find them on markdown)

School books and supplies for use at home when the time comes (paper, pens, markers, crayons, rulers) all purchased on sale last year, I just purchase extra when I buy school supplies.

Beside the all of the above I have a huge bag of candy (back from halloween) and other kids munchies for my two boys.

During power outages I bring indoors the solar garden lights, which I place on the stairs, It makes negotiating the stairs a little safer.  I have the older solar lights that are amber so they dont throw out a lot of light, so I shall be upgrading them to the white lights this summer.  Also these lights can be used to charge rechargeable battries, which to my thinking they become two preps in one.

Brilliant, had not thought about solar lights recharging my double A batteries for cd portable players, etc. Thank you.
