RUSSIAN OCCUPATION ARMY EXPLODED THE RAILWAY BRIDGE IN THE KASPI DISTRICT

** UPDATE **

Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia

Despite the international community???s efforts and the signing of documents on cessation of hostilities, the Russian Federation???s armed forces continue military actions against Georgia, destroying civilian infrastructure.

On 16 August 2008 troops of the Russian occupation army mined and exploded the Metekhi-Grakali span of the railway bridge in the Kaspi district. This subversive-terrorist act resulted in the severing of railway links between the east and west of Georgia and connections with Georgia???s seaports. Moreover, the bridge used to provide a route for refugees from the Russian-occupied territories into safe places.

Russia is pursuing deliberate policy aimed at undermining Georgia???s statehood, including through bringing about humanitarian catastrophe.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia calls on the international community and friend countries to take urgent measures to avert humanitarian catastrophe in Georgia and prevent destruction of Georgia???s statehood.

Tbilisi, 16 August 2008

Welcome Mary - you are posting some very interesting data. Have been so caught up in the Gulf and birds that haven't been monitoring Russia's military moves in Georgia and the southern province. There is a distinct split between Western media and what you can find on other crawlers which do not flow through Yahoo, Google, or Dogpile.  While the battle is over oil, the battlefield is unlikely to be the Caspian sea.  As you know there were 1,000 Israeli troops involved in the fighting,

Islam and Islamic Practices in Georgia
George Sanikidze and Edward W. Walker

EXCERPT-

ISLAM IN AJARIA
The region of Ajaria was Islamized quite late. Until the 1770s, most Ajarians were Christian.
Islamicization began after Ajaria was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in the early seventeenth century and accelerated especially after the 1820s. When the Ottomans ceded Ajaria to Russia in 1878, some 6,000 Muslim Ajarians fled the region in search of refuge in Turkey.

Orthodox Christian missionaries also began actively proselytizing in the region in the late nineteenth
century.

The long-standing Christian presence in the region remains as such today.11
The Muslims of Ajaria are, virtually without exception, Sunnis. Sufism, however, is rare, despite its widespread presence in Turkey to the west and among other Muslims of Georgia.
Moreover, in general Islamicization in Ajaria was rather superficial, as Islamic practices in the region intermingled with non-Islamic traditions often linked to Georgian Christianity.

Hello Med :)   liked your posts.

I'm thinking...
US will not launch an attack on Iran...  not in this age of proxy war.
I imagine we are downplaying Georgia because Europe is very dependant on Russia energywise.  No move is a good move there. France is ok due to nuky plants every 30 miles.  Ukraine is very brave to stand with Georgia.   Russia's game is to drive folks nuts until they do something off the wall in anger.

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline

(sometimes abbreviated as BTC pipeline)
is a crude oil pipeline that covers 1,768 kilometres (1,099 mi) from the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli oil field in the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. It connects Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan; Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia; and Ceyhan, a port on the south-eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey, hence its name. It is the second longest oil pipeline in the world after the Druzhba pipeline. The first oil that was pumped from the Baku end of the pipeline on May 10,

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a1/Baku_pipelines.svg">Image:Baku%20pipelines.svg

Even before its completion, the BTC pipeline was affecting the world's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petroleum_politics - oil politics . The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Caucasus - South Caucasus , previously seen as Russia's backyard, is now a region of great strategic significance to other great powers. The U.S. and other Western nations have consequently become much more closely involved in the affairs of the three nations through which oil will flow. Some have criticized this degree of western involvement in the South Caucasus, arguing that it has led to an unhealthy dependence on undemocratic leaders.[ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed - citation needed ] The countries themselves though have been trying to use the involvement as a counterbalance to Russian and Iranian economic and military dominance in the region. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan_Pipeline#cite_note-silkroad4-14 - [15] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan_Pipeline#cite_note-silkroad5-21 - [22] It is seen similarly by Russian specialists claiming that the pipeline is aimed to weaken the Russian influence in the Caucasus. The Russian Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee chairman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konstantin_Kosachev - Konstantin Kosachev even stated that the United States and other Western countries are planning to settle their soldiers in Caucasus on the pretext of instability in regions where the pipeline passes through. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan_Pipeline#cite_note-aia-22 - [23]

The project also constitutes an important leg of the East-West energy corridor, gaining http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey - Turkey greater geopolitical importance. The BTC pipeline also supports Georgia's independence from Russian influence. Former President http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_Shevardnadze - Eduard Shevardnadze , one of the architects and initiators of the project, saw the construction of the pipeline through Georgian territory as a certain guarantee for the country's future economic and political security and stability. This view has been fully shared by his successor President http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Saakashvili - Mikhail Saakashvili . "All strategic contracts in Georgia, especially the contract for the Caspian pipeline are a matter of survival for the Georgian state," he told reporters on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_26 - 26 November http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003 - 2003 . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan_Pipeline#cite_note-stimes-23 - [24]

[ http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan_pipeline&action=edit&section=14 - edit ] Economics

Although some have touted the BTC pipeline as potentially removing the dependence of the US and other Western nations on oil from the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East - Middle East , in reality it doesn't change global dependence on Middle Eastern oil as it supplies only 1% of global demand during its first stage.[ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed - citation needed ] However, the pipeline diversifies the global oil supply and so ensures, to an extent, against a failure in supply elsewhere. Critics of the pipeline—particularly Russia—are skeptical about its economic prospects and see this as politically motivated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan_Pipeline#cite_note-rian-24 - [25]

Construction of the BTC pipeline has contributed significantly to the economies of the host countries. In the first half of 2007, a year after the completion and launch of BTC pipeline as the main export route for Azerbaijani oil, the real GDP growth of Azerbaijan hit a record of 35%. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan_Pipeline#cite_note-imf-25 - [26] Substantial transit fees accrue to Georgia and Turkey. For Georgia the transit fees are expected to produce an average of US$62.5 million per year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan_Pipeline#cite_note-silkroad5-21 - [22] Turkey is expected to receive approximately US$200 million in transit fees per year in the initial years of operation, with the possibility of increasing to US$290 million per year from year 17 to year 40. Turkey is also benefitting from an increase in economic activity in eastern Anatolia, including increased importance of the port of Ceyhan, which had experienced significant reductions of activities since the 1991 Gulf War. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan_Pipeline#cite_note-silkroad3-26 - [27] The reduction of oil tanker traffic on the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosphorus - Bosphorus will contribute to greater security for Istanbul. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan_Pipeline#cite_note-zaman-27 - [28]

The Trans/Caspian gas pipeline would run under the Caspian Sea from Türkmenbaşy to the Sangachal Terminal, where it would connect with the existing pipeline to Erzurum in Turkey, which in turn would be connected to the Nabucco pipeline,

thus taking natural gas from Turkmenistan to Central Eaurope.

Excerpt-

11 August 2008

As the great powers seek energy security, Turkmenistan is at the center of a number of pipeline proposals.

After years of isolation, Turkmenistan has been host to hundreds of official delegations from the world’s great powers, as Europe, Russia, China, and India pursue energy security with an eye toward the country's gas deposits. President Berdymukhamedov has forsaken at least some of his predecessor’s inward focus, in favor of a “multi-vector” natural resource strategy. The strategy relies on multiple hydrocarbon export routes, and the various gas importers each have a route in mind.

Key pipeline proposals include the

Caspian coastal pipeline,

the Central Asia-China pipeline,

the TAPI and IPI pipelines,

and the Nabucco and Trans-Caspian pipelines.

GEO FOREIGN MINISTRY COMMENTS ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia made a statement on 18 August on recent developments in the country. "As it was indicated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia dated 13 August 2008,

representatives of Abkhazia''s separatist authorities profited from the escalated situation in the Tskhinvali region and, in violation of all agreements and treaties signed up to this day and with the assistance of Russian invaders, occupied Upper Abkhazia and conducted a mass cleansing of the region''s ethnic Georgian population.

"The Russian Federation''s troops have gone beyond the security zone. Currently there are approximately 9,000 Russian servicemen and their hardware and military equipment stationed in Abkhazia''s adjacent Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region and Poti. Divisions of the occupation army are looting state buildings and population, mining and exploding bridges, transport and economic infrastructure.

"Military and civilian vessels have been sunk in the Poti port, warehouses - robbed, docks - exploded. Exact amount of damage is difficult to calculate due to the presence of armed invaders in the region. "Separatists together with Russian servicemen shifted Abkhazia''s administrative border up to the Enguri River and occupied the villages of Ganmukhuri and Khurcha of the Zugdidi district.

"Russian ''peacekeepers'' have not even tried to prevent the movement of Abkhazian separatists thus violating their mandated obligations, which were affirmed already on 10 August 2008 by the UN Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Edmond Mulet at an emergency session of the UN Security Council held in New York.

"It needs to be emphasized that such actions of the Abkhaz separatists and Russian ''peacekeepers'' represent a gross violation of the 1994 Moscow Agreement on Ceasefire and Separation of Forces and all resolutions on the existing situation in Abkhazia, Georgia adopted by the UN Security Council.

"Both the Russian Federation and representatives of Abkhazia''s separatist authorities call on the Georgian side for compliance with the agreement, which they have themselves ''trampled'' without the slightest hesitation. "It is absolutely obvious to the international community that the Russian Federation chose destruction of economy with the use of military force and ethnic cleansing as an instrument for implementing its foreign policy," the Foreign Ministry''s statement reads. The conflict between Georgia and Abkhazia following the disintegration of the Soviet Union was characterized by both sides’ use of landmines.  Between 1992 and 1993, both forces laid tens of thousands of mines.  12 new landmine casualties were reported in 2002, but this data is believed to be an underestimate.  Lack of resources impedes the proper functioning of health care facilities, creating a compelling need for support in survivor assistance operations.

The Association of Inva (AIS), through "Project Vika" is providing physical and psychological rehabilitation for landmine survivors and other disabled people in Abkhazia, formerly part of the Soviet Union.   Abkhazia’s limited capacity to provide rehabilitative services, coupled with its population of over 700 amputees, creates a need for this type of project.  "Project  Vika" is providing services to disabled people with the greatest need.  The program is supplying clients with mobility devices and access to a prosthetic clinic as well as employment training classes at their computer center.

POTI (AFP) - Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili took, Monday, March 15, 2004, the first radical measures-without resorting to force to restore Tbilisi's authority over the autonomous republic of Adjara, currently quasi-independent under the leadership of its leader Aslan Abashidze.

The latter, a pro-Russian autocrat, has rejected the demands presented by Tbilisi in the form of an ultimatum with the threat of an economic blockade.

The road, rail and air to and from Adjara was blocked Monday, March 15, 2004, announced on Georgian Minister of the Interior, Gueorgui Baramidzé.

The Georgian government, which met under the chairmanship of Mr. Saakashvili in Poti, a port on the Black Sea, was to begin putting in place a naval blockade of Batumi, the capital adjare to prevent a hypothetical introduction of weapons . A "General Staff anti-crisis" was created to manage the conflict and in particular to "prevent any illegal transit."

On Ms Rice.....

In late 2005, there was a dispute between Russia and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine - Ukraine after Russia decided to quadruple the price of energy being provided to the Ukrainian market http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condoleezza_Rice#cite_note-143 - [144] (Ukraine was receiving heavily subsidized prices for gas from Russia, the increase would have made the price equal to that of the current market price). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condoleezza_Rice#cite_note-144 - [145]

Rice subsequently criticised Russia's actions, accusing Russia of using its gas wealth as a political weapon. She called on Russia to behave as a responsible energy supplier and stated that the act did not show the international community "that it is now prepared to act … as an energy supplier in a responsible way."

Rice insisted, "When you say you want to be a part of the international economy and you want to be a responsible actor in the international economy, then you play by its rules … I think that kind of behavior is going to continue to draw comment about the distance between Russian behavior and something like this and what would be expected of a responsible member of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G8 - G8 ." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condoleezza_Rice#cite_note-145 - [146]

Four http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F/A-18_Hornet - F/A-18C Hornets were launched when the bombers were 500 miles away from the U.S. ships, and intercepted the bombers 50 miles south of the Nimitz. Two F/A-18s trailed one of the bombers, which buzzed the deck of the carrier twice, while the other two F/A-18s trailed another TU-95 circling about 50 miles away from the carrier.

The fighters then proceeded to guide the Russians away from the area. Reportedly, there was no radio communication between the American and Russian aircraft. According to the Department of Defense, one of the two aircraft was said to have flown above the Nimitz at an altitude of 2,000 feet. This caused much controversy.

[20.08.2008] Members of the OSCE decided to increase the number of military observers in Georgia.

In the first stage, we can talk about a group of 10-20 people," - said in an interview with "RG" and. about. postpreda Russia to the OSCE Vladimir Voronkov. "In this matter, to bypass Russia will not succeed. For us the only international organization that can be observed in the security zone, remains the OSCE" - he said
(NOTE: The OSCE is not an international organization in the strict sense of international law, which is to say that its resolutions are not legally binding on the signatory countries.  This may be considered a weakness, since it means that its decisions can at best have only the power of influence)

cene At Russia-Georgia Border Hinted At Scripted Affair

Did Russian peacekeepers at South Ossetia's de facto border know what was coming?
    August 23, 2008
    By Brian Whitmore

Said Tsarnayev stumbled into a war.

A Chechen freelance photographer with the Reuters news agency, Tsarnayev arrived in the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali, during the day on August 7. Traveling together with a colleague, Tsarnayev said he planned to take photographs of the environment and natural surroundings in the area for a project he was working on.

Once in Tskhinvali, he discovered a virtual army of Russian journalists at his hotel.

Speaking to RFE/RL's North Caucasus Service, Tsarnayev, a resident of the Chechen capital, Grozny, said the Moscow-based reporters had been sent from various Russian media outlets days earlier, and were preparing to cover something big.

"At the hotel we discovered that there were already 48 Russian journalists there. Together with us, there were 50 people," Tsarnayev said. "I was the only one representing a foreign news agency. The rest were from Russian media and they arrived three days before we did, as if they knew that something was going to happen. Earlier at the border crossing, we met one man who was taking his wife and children from Tskhinvali."

Late that night, armed conflict broke out between Russia and Georgia.

    'No Relationship To Reality'

Tsarnayev's account could not be independently confirmed. But it is consistent with mounting indications that Russia had been planning an attack on Georgia in advance, and was just waiting for a pretext to carry it out.

Russia's state-controlled media seemed extremely well-prepared to cover the outbreak of armed conflict in Georgia. Television networks immediately presented elaborate graphics with news anchors and commentators appearing to stick to disciplined talking points accusing Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili of aggression, and the Georgian armed forces of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

The country's best English-speaking officials were made readily available to Western media, where they relentlessly pushed Moscow's line on the conflict: Russia was simply protecting its citizens and peacekeepers in South Ossetia from atrocities at the hands of Georgia's military.

In an interview with RFE/RL in the early days of the conflict, Steven Pifer, a former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine who is now a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, said Moscow's rhetoric and media narrative suggests they were preparing a large-scale operation.

"The rhetoric that is coming out of Moscow, ethnic cleansing and genocide, is just way over the top," Pifer said. "It's almost approaching the point where there is just no relationship to reality. But again, certainly the rhetoric is appropriate to a larger operation against Georgia to just stop and reverse whatever military gains the Georgians made in South Ossetia on [August 7]."

The apparently well-prepared media narrative is only part of the picture.

On August 3, authorities in Georgia's Moscow-backed separatist province of South Ossetia began evacuating hundreds of children to Russia. At the time, Georgian officials said the move could be a signal that separatist authorities, and their patrons in Russia, were preparing an offensive.

South Ossetian authorities said at the time that the evacuations were a precaution in case Georgia attempted to retake the province by force -- something Moscow and Tskhinvali had been accusing Tbilisi of plotting to do.

Speaking at a news conference in Moscow on August 21, the deputy head of Russia's General Staff, Colonel General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, reiterated Moscow's claims that the Georgian side was preparing to use force.

"We have complaints against the OSCE regarding the initial stage of the conflict -- they were informed by the Georgian side that there would be an invasion, but they didn't warn the Russian peacekeepers," Nogovitsyn said.

In remarks reported by "The Washington Post," Georgian Defense Minister Davit Kezerashvili said he gave the order for Georgian forces to "go out from their bases" at 6 p.m. local time on August 7, just one hour before Saakashvili announced a unilateral cease-fire.

    Months In The Works

Kezerashvili said the Georgian troop movement was designed to deter South Ossetian separatists, who were firing across the de facto border into Georgian-controlled villages.

But observers say the march toward war on Moscow's side began months earlier.

In fact, hostilities began escalating soon after NATO delayed granting Membership Action Plans -- a key phase before full membership -- to Georgia and Ukraine at its summit in early April.

Less than two weeks later, Vladimir Putin, who was in the last month of his presidency, signed a decree authorizing direct relations with and assistance for Georgia's two pro-Moscow separatist provinces, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Later in April, Russia deployed 1,500 additional troops, some of them heavily armed, to its "peacekeeping" contingent in Abkhazia without Georgia's consent  -- an express violation of the 1994 cease-fire agreement.

Russia also began shooting down Georgia's unmanned drone aircraft that were conducting reconnaissance over Abkhazia. Russian military aircraft also began regularly violating Georgian airspace near the separatist territory.

In June, Russia deployed unarmed troops to Abkhazia to rebuild a rail link between Sukhumi and Ochamchira. At the time, Moscow presented the move as a humanitarian gesture to improve Abkhazia's transportation infrastructure. But U.S. and Georgian officials later pointed out that the railway was used to transport military equipment and munitions into Georgia during the conflict.

Then, with everybody watching Abkhazia, the focus abruptly shifted to South Ossetia.

In July, Russia's armed forces began massive military training exercises in the North Caucasus involving 8,000 servicemen and 700 pieces of military hardware. Russia's 58th Army, which would later spearhead the incursion into Georgia on August 8, was the key unit in those maneuvers.

The 58th Army remained in the North Caucasus after the exercises. Shortly thereafter, Georgian and South Ossetian separatist forces began exchanging artillery, mortar, and sniper fire across the de facto border. Georgian officials accuse the separatists of instigating the exchanges, but South Ossetian authorities deny the allegation.

Pifer said is appears that Russia laid a well-prepared trap for the Georgians, and Tbilisi took the bait.

"The Georgian leadership made a mistake on [August 7]. They should have understood from what they have seen from the Russians that the Russians were looking for a pretext. They [the Georgians] gave them that pretext when they decided to go in a fairly large way into South Ossetia," Pifer said. "The speed of the Russian response suggests that the Russians were ready, they were just waiting for the reason and they took that as the reason."

Russian warship eases Abkhazian fears of NATO

On Wednesday, Abkhazia put on a welcome for a Russian warship arriving in its capital's port. The flagship cruiser ’Moskva’ dropped anchor in Sukhum, and joins two other Russian vessels in the town’s port. It’s hoped their arrival will ease locals fears about NATO’s increased presence nearby.

http://www.infowars.com/?p=4205 - Moscow: Military Help for Georgia a "Declaration of War"

    This Is London
    August 28, 2008

Moscow has issued an extraordinary warning to the West that military assistance to Georgia for use against South Ossetia or Abkhazia would be viewed as a “declaration of war” by Russia.

The extreme rhetoric from the Kremlin’s envoy to NATO came as President Dmitry Medvedev stressed he will make a military response to US missile defence installations in eastern Europe, sending new shudders across countries whose people were once blighted by the Iron Curtain.

And Moscow also emphasised it was closely monitoring what it claims is a build-up of NATO firepower in the Black Sea.

The incendiary warning on Western military involvement in Georgia - where NATO nations have long played a role in training and equipping the small state - came in an interview with Dmitry Rogozin, a former nationalist politician who is now ambassador to the North Atlantic Alliance.

“If NATO suddenly takes military actions against Abkhazia and South Ossetia, acting solely in support of Tbilisi, this will mean a declaration of war on Russia,” he stated.

Yesterday likened the current world crisis to the fevered atmosphere before the start of the First World War.

Rogozin said he did not believe the crisis would descend to war between the West and Russia.

Georgian port is focal point of standoff with Russia

...On Wednesday the United States shelved plans to unload 38 tons of humanitarian cargo at Poti, not because the port was closed but to avoid a potential confrontation with Moscow. The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Dallas delivered its cargo instead to Batumi, 50 miles to the south.

Poti is a key element in a network of seaports, railroads, highways and energy pipelines to Azerbaijan and Armenia that makes Georgia a major transit link between East and West. The U.S. Commerce Department has described the sleepy, working-class town of 50,000 people as the most important port in the mountainous Caucasus region, which stretches east and west along Russia's southern border....

In this regard, Dmitry Medvedev expressed appreciation for the understanding and objective assessment of our country's peacekeeping efforts in the Caucasus. "I am confident that the position of the Member States of SCO will receive proper international resonance, and I hope this is a serious signal to those who are trying to extradite the black for white," - he said

The Georgian Kingdom reached its zenith in the 12th to early 13th centuries. This period has been widely termed as Georgia's Golden Age or Georgian Renaissance during the reign of David the Builder and Queen Tamar.

This early Georgian renaissance, which preceded its European analogue, was characterized by the flourishing of romantic- chivalric tradition, breakthroughs in philosophy, and an array of political innovations in society and state organization, including religious and ethnic tolerance. The Golden age of Georgia left a legacy of great cathedrals, romantic poetry and literature, and the epic poem "The Knight in the Panther's Skin". The struggle against the Seljuk invaders was led by the David the Builder, who employed tens of thousands Kipchak soldiers and settled them, in 1118, in his kingdom.

The Ushguli is dominated by typical Svan defensive towers, most dating back to the 9th-12th centuries[23]The revival of the Georgian Kingdom was short-lived however, in 1226 Tblisi was captured by Mingburnu and the Kingdom was eventually subjugated by the Mongols in 1236 (see Mongol invasions of Georgia). Thereafter, different local rulers fought for their independence from central Georgian rule, until the total disintegration of the Kingdom in the 15th century.

Georgia was subjected, between 1386 and 1404, to several disastrous invasions by Timur. Neighbouring kingdoms exploited the situation and from the 16th century, the Persian Empire and the Ottoman Empire subjugated the eastern and western regions of Georgia, respectively.

U.S. warship leaves Sevastopol after protests

Ukrainian customs officers who boarded the ship and met the commander said they had been prepared to lay on buses for the U.S. crew to give them a tour of the city, but apart from a few officers, no one left the vessel.

Tensions between Russia and the West have been exacerbated by the build up in the Black Sea of U.S. and NATO naval vessels delivering humanitarian aid to Georgia. In an apparent response, Russia sent a group of warships last week, including the Moskva missile cruiser, to Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia

One of the most notable events involving the city is the Siege of Sevastopol (1854–1855) carried out by the British, French, Sardinian, and Turkish troops during the Crimean War, which lasted for 11 months.

Despite its efforts, the Russian army had to leave its stronghold and evacuate over a pontoon bridge to the north shore of the inlet. The Russians had to sink their entire fleet to prevent it from falling into the hands of the enemy and at the same time to block the entrance of the Western ships into the inlet.

When the enemy troops entered Sevastopol, they were faced with the ruins of a formerly glorious city. A panorama of the siege created by Franz Roubaud and which was restored after its destruction in 1942 is housed in a specially constructed circular building in the city. It portrays the situation in the height of the siege, on 18 June 1855.

Well... Turkey let in three ships for aid to Georgia..   Not exactly an armada.

There isn't much for the Government to say.  Nations have to run on oil and it can't be disrupted.   When there is unspeakable firepower floating near by and the worry is a defensive missile site in Poland?    The worry should be .... "Oh my God, we sold NUK missiles to How Many rogue nations?"  Talk about messing with one's own economy.
Yer not livin in a bubble now....the Russian Ruble and stock market have to be tended to at all times...fun isn't it?

The cold war stunk.  Is there any way Mr. Putin can turn it around?

Of Course.  Russia is not on the list.  He could make Russia a shining example to all the countries around.  By extending his friendship through cooperation.  Russia has a lot to offer.  They are one Nation very rich in resources.

Imagine the shock of  15 of our United States declaring themselves independant.
All of a sudden California, Florida, Maine start electing their own presidents.  Florida won't sell us their oranges any more because the Canadians struck a deal.  Then the Texans and the Mexicans start a war.  Texans flee into the neighboring country of Arizona where camps are set up.

I think they are coping pretty well over there in the few yrs since.
Russia is not poor.  China invited everyone in to set up businesses and asked questions and see how well they are doing, they own a bunch of our debt.

Stop Russias Unlawful Military Invasion in Sovereign Georgia
    .
To:  President of the United States; Congress of the United States; European Council; President of the European Commission; NATO Secretary General; Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe

Since August 8, 2008 the whole world has been witnessing Russia’s open military invasion into the independent and sovereign Republic of Georgia. Thousands of soldiers and tanks of the Russian Federation have breached the internationally recognized borders of Georgia and have been fiercely attacking Georgian troops. Furthermore, Russian warplanes have violated the Georgian airspace and carried out air strikes at different Georgian cities outside the conflict zone. These strikes have caused hundreds of casualties among civilian population.

The main reason for Russian invasion is Georgia’s close ties with the United States and the European Union countries and its willingness to build free and democratic society. Russian invasion is a desperate move to curb Georgia’s aspiration to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union.

This outrageous military aggression by Russia unequivocally reveals its imperialistic aspirations. Irresponsible incursion by Russian troops into sovereign Georgia can be perceived as nothing less than Moscow’s strong nostalgia for the Soviet Union era and zeal for “restoring” its rule in neighboring peaceful countries. By invading Georgia, Russia sends a clear message to the free world that it is ready to brutally punish any of its neighboring countries that choose to embrace the democratic and humanistic values, which the United States and the European Union countries are standing for.

The moment of truth has come for the United States and the European Union. Georgia needs HELP from its American and European friends to stop Russian invasion. Failing to react to Russian blatant military aggression will undermine the future of democracy in the region and beyond. Furthermore, inaction by the United States and the European Union will give a go-ahead to Russia to carry out military aggression elsewhere in its neighborhood in the future.

We are calling on the President of the United States and the Leaders of the European Union Nations to help Georgia and to actively pressure the Russian Government to cease fire and to withdraw its troops from the Sovereign Republic of Georgia.

    Sincerely,

    excerpt-

After three weeks in Georgia reporting on the war and its aftermath, I find one conversation sticks with me. I had arrived in Karaleti, a Georgian village north of Gori. I had gone there with a group of foreign journalists in a Russian army truck; our ultimate destination was Tskhinvali, in South Ossetia. Several houses along the main road had been burned down; an abandoned Lada lay in a ditch; someone had looted the local school.

Refugees from Karaleti and nearby villages gave the same account: South Ossetian militias had swept in on August 12, killing, burning, stealing and kidnapping. Sasha, our Kremlin minder, however, had a different explanation. "Georgian special commandos burned the houses," he told us. I demurred, pointing out that it was unlikely Georgian special commandos would have burned down Georgian villages north of Tskhinvali, deep inside rebel-held South Ossetia. Sasha's face grew dark; he wasn't used to contradiction. "Those houses suffered from a gas or electricity leak," he answered majestically.

    Press Release
    August 18th, 2008 - Vienna

Pipeline capacities are more than 100 percent overbooked by potential shippers on a non binding basis

    • In preparation of the Open Season Process the Nabucco Gas Pipeline International GmbH undertook an actual market survey amongst potential shippers on a non binding basis last month.
    • Nabucco capacities are more than 100 Percent overbooked by potential shippers from day one in 2013 on a long term basis.
    • Strong request for transport of natural gas from various gas sources in Central Asia and Middle Eeast.
    • Open Season Process will start, when the legal framework - Exemption Process and Intergovermnental Agreement - is finally established.

August 18th, 2008: Reinhard Mitschek, Managing Director of Nabucco Gas Pipeline International GmbH stated: "This result is a strong positive signal from the European gas market and potential shippers to Nabucco. More than 100 Percent overbooking from day one in 2013 shows huge demand for the provided Nabucco capacities on a strong growing gas market."
The current market sounding last month addressed potential shippers to deliver their interests in Nabucco capacities on a non binding basis. So far Nabucco Gas Pipeline International GmbH has already signed various Letters of Interests with potential shippers. The result of the recent market survey underlines this interest.
"The Open Season Process itself will start after the legal framework for Nabucco - Exemption Process and Intergovernmental Agreement - is finally established. This is an important prerequisition for the project", said Mitschek.
Pioneer project for securing Europe's gas supply

The Nabucco project is one of Europe´s most important energy infrastructure projects to strengthen Europe's security of supply for natural gas, as it contributes substantially to diversifying existing supply routes. The 3,300 km long pipeline connects the large gas deposits in the Caspian region, the Middle East and Egypt with Europe. The investment costs will amount to approximately EUR 7.9 bn. When completed, the pipeline's annual capacity will be 31 bcm. Shareholders nowadays are OMV, MOL, Transgaz, Bulgargaz Holding, BOTAS and RWE.

SOUTH STREAM: GAZPROM’S NEW MEGA PROJECT

If carried out, South Stream would partly replace the planned extension of Blue Stream from Turkey through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and Austria. Either project is rival to the EU- and U.S.-backed Nabucco transport project for Caspian gas along that same route. South Stream would also rival the proposed extension of the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline through Turkey, which is planned to either be integrated with Nabucco or run from Turkey to Greece and Italy. Apart from running ahead in the transit and downstream races, Russia is running way ahead in the upstream race for Central Asian gas to feed these projects.

    Oil Exports
Russia’s production growth in the upcoming decade will depend on the availability of viable export routes for the country’s crude oil. Transneft currently has a monopoly over Russia’s pipeline network. Destinations of Russian Oil Exports
During 2007, Russia exported almost 4.4 million bbl/d of crude oil, and over 2 million bbl/d of oil products. Roughly 1.3 million bbl/d were exported via the Druzhba pipeline to Belarus, Ukraine, Germany, Poland, and other destinations in Central and Eastern Europe (including Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic), around 1.3 million bbl/d via the new flagship Primorsk port near St. Petersburg, and around 900,000 bbl/d via the Black Sea.

The majority of Russia’s oil exports transit via Transneft-controlled pipelines, but around 300,000 bbl/d of oil is transported via other non-Transneft-controlled sea routes or via rail. Because of higher world oil prices recently, almost 170,000 bbl/d of Russia's oil is transported via railroad (see table below).

    Oil Product Exports and Balance
Most of Russia's product exports consist of http://www.eia.doe.gov/glossary/glossary_f.htm - fuel oil and http://www.eia.doe.gov/glossary/glossary_d.htm - diesel fuel , which are used for heating in European countries and, on a small scale, in the United States. Russian oil exports to the U.S. have almost doubled since 2004, rising to over 400,000 bbl/d of crude oil and products in 2007. Updated monthly and annual data are available from http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_move_impcus_a2_nus_ep00_im0_mbblpd_a.htm - EIA’s Petroleum Navigator . Increases in product exports can be attributed to political pressures to maintain refinery operations and higher international oil product prices. A draft plan for the refining sector’s development for 2005-2008 foresees continued increases in the production of high quality light oil products, catalysts and raw material for the petrochemical industry. As production of fuel oil is reduced, local refineries are only meeting about half of the country’s demand for high octane gasoline. Consequently, Russia must import the remainder.

In the last ten years OECD Europe’s reliance on Russian crude exports has grown from around 12 percent of total crude imports to around 29 percent in 2007.

Proposed Oil Pipeline Routes and Pipeline Expansion Projects

North and West: Baltic Pipeline System (BPS) Expansion
The BPS came online in December 2001 carrying crude oil from Russia's West Siberian and Timan-Pechora oil provinces westward to the newly completed port of http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/baltics.html - Primorsk in the Russian Gulf of Finland (see http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/Russia/Maps.html - Maps section). The BPS gives Russia a direct outlet to northern European markets, allowing the country to reduce its dependence on transit routes through Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Unfortunately for the Baltic countries, the growth of the BPS has come at considerable cost, as Russian crude which traditionally moved through the Baltic region has been re-routed through the BPS.

Throughput capacity at Primorsk has steadily increased, reaching around 1.5 million bbl/d during 2007 on average. With the usage of larger-sized Baltimax tankers, throughput from the port should continue to increase this year. Although the port’s actual export capacity is allegedly twice as large (around 3 million bbl/d), pipeline capacity to the port keeps exports constrained. The Baltic Pipeline System-II (BPS-II) expansion will add new export outlets to the region, and in May 2008 the Russian government decided that a new line will run to the port of Ust-Luga with a branch going to the Kirishi oil refinery, The first stage of the Baltic Pipeline System (BPS, designed to transport oil from both Russia's oil-producing regions and Kazakhstan, was commissioned in 2001. Transneft has estimated the cost of the second stage to Ust-Luga at around $3.3 billion.

Russian product line operator Transnefteproduct expects began shipments of oil products from Primorsk in May 2008. Exports of around 180,000 bbl/d of products (8.4 million tons/year) were originally expected to begin during the third quarter of 2007.

Related information on energy in the Baltic Sea Region is discussed in the http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/baltics.html - Baltic Sea Region Country Analysis Brief .

North and West: Murmansk Area, Kharyaga-Indiga Pipeline, and Varandei Terminal
International shipping from the Murmansk area has two advantages: the port is ice-free most of the year, and it is deep enough to make shipping to the United States economic without reloading in Europe. Several pipeline proposals connecting the Murmansk area to existing producing areas in the south in the last several years have been met with lukewarm reactions by Transneft (see http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/Russia/Maps.html - Maps section) The state-owned company now plans a pipeline to Indiga, 240 miles from the Timan-Pechora producing basin, that is closer but iced over in winter. No timeline has been set for construction. Oil from Timan-Pechora has a lower sulfur content and is lighter than the rest of the Urals blend.

Now, Russian oil is delivered to the Murmansk area by rail, and in 2007 around 270,000 bbl/d of crude oil and products were shipped from the area. Lukoil will complete its $1 billion, 240,000-bbl/d terminal at Varandei in June 2008, which will allow shipments from the northern part of Timan-Pechora. Lukoil’s major source of oil for this terminal will be the Yuzhno-Khylchuyu field where production is expected to begin during the summer of 2008 and rise to 150,000 bbl/d by the end of 2009.

West: Druzhba Pipeline and Adria Reversal Project
Of the 1.3 million bbl/d of oil transported via the Druzhba Pipeline, only around 350,000 bbl/d flows to the south to Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Reversal of the Adria pipeline, which spans between Croatia's port of Omisalj on the Adriatic Sea and Hungary (see map), has been under consideration since the 1990s. The pipeline, which was completed in 1974, was originally designed to load Middle Eastern oil at Omisalj, then pipe it northward to Yugoslavia and on to Hungary. However, given both the Adria pipeline's existing interconnection with the Russian system, and Russia's booming production, the pipeline's operators and transit states have since considered reversing the pipeline's flow, thus giving Russia a new export outlet on the Adriatic Sea. The proposal included expanding the pipeline’s capacity from 100,000 bbl/d to 300,000 bbl/d at a cost of around $320 million.

In 2005, Croatia determined that an environmental impact study of such a reversal was incomplete and not based on enough expert knowledge, thereby killing the proposal. During the Belarus-Russia oil dispute in 2007, Hungary said that it could technically reverse its portion of the pipeline within 20-30 days.

Eastern Siberia Pacific Ocean Pipeline (ESPO): Taishet - Skovorodino - Kozmino Bay
Until 2004, Russian energy officials were unwilling to commit to one of two oil transit pipelines to eastern Asia. President Putin announced that Russia would commit to building a 2,500-mile pipeline route from the Russian city of Taishet to Kozmino Bay, southeast of Nakhodka in two stages. The endpoint for the pipeline was moved from Perevoznaya Bay to protect endangered species there.

The 1,200-mile first stage of the 600,000 bbl/d-pipeline will flow from Taishet to Skovorodino along with a port facility at Kozmino Bay. Although Transneft expects first commissioning of the pipeline by December 2009, as of December 2007 roughly 28% of the first stage of the pipeline route has not been welded and buried. Oil will be shipped via rail to the Pacific coast until the second stage of the pipeline is constructed. China has agreed to finance the 43-mile, 300,000-bbl/d spur from Skovorodino to the Chinese border. Transneft now estimates that the first stage of the project will cost around $12.5 billion, up from an original estimate of around $6 billion. In April 2008, around 1.5 million barrels filled the first stage of the pipeline, which will first operate in reverse mode to bring oil production from East Siberia to refining centers in West Siberia. The second stage of the pipeline will run from Skovorodino to the Pacific Coast, with planned designed capacity of 1.6 million bbl/d.

    http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/Russia/images/RFproposedFarEastPipeMap.pdf">

(Source: US Government, click to enlarge)

The route to Kozmino Bay is significantly more expensive than an alternative route to Daqing, China, since it covers a greater distance and involves more investment. However, the new route will open up a new Pacific port from which Russian oil exports could be shipped by tanker to other Asian markets and possibly even to North America.

The initial stage of the ESPO pipeline will get significant volumes of sweet crude from the TNK-BP-led East Siberian Verkhnechonsk field, in which Rosneft is a partner, and from Surgutneftegas' Talakan field. Also, significant volumes (up to 270,000 bbl/d by 2010 according to Degolyer & McNaughton) would come from Rosneft’s Vankor field. Production from the three fields alone should be able to fill the pipe by around 2011.

Some hurdles exist to the Eastern Pipeline’s plan. First, financing the project is challenging. Russia has obtained Japanese promises of $7 billion for the project, but the first stage will be financed with a $2.4 billion revolving credit from state-owned Sberbank. The route passes through multiple environmentally sensitive areas which could have the potential to further delay the project. Finally, the government estimates that transportation tariffs could be roughly $6 per barrel, but other outside analysts estimate the level at up to $10 per barrel, which would help pay for increasing capital costs.

    Black Sea/Turkish Straits
After Russian oil flows through the various pipelines described above, crude oil and products are shipped onward to Europe, the United States, and Asia via tanker. The bulk of Russia's oil (roughly 1 million bbl/d of crude) is shipped to the Mediterranean and to Asia via tankers in the Black Sea, mostly from the port of Novorossiysk. With the opening of the BTC pipeline in early 2006 and rising oil production exports from Caspian countries, Black Sea port shipments through the Bosporus will likely remain at around the same levels for the next couple years. The new Russian support for the Bourgas Alexandropoulis pipeline route, combined with existing support, makes this option one of the more commercially-feasible routes to help alleviate flows via the Bosporus.

    Raill Export Routes
Rail exports comprise roughly 5% of Russian crude oil exports. But unless significant investment flows into expanding the Russian pipeline network's capacity, non-pipeline transported exports are poised to increase even more in the upcoming years. As China's growth continues, rail routes are the only way to provide Russian crude oil to East Asia. In the absence of a dedicated pipeline route, Russian crude oil is exported via rail to the northeast cities of Harbin and Daqing and to central China via Mongolia. Rail exports of crude oil to China increased from approximately 200,000 bbl/d in 2005 to 300,000 bbl/d by 2006 according to China’s Ministry of Railways.

TBILISI (Reuters) - Russia agreed on Monday to completely withdraw its troops from Georgia's heartland within a month, but there was no commitment to scale back its military presence in two Georgian separatist regions.

In light of the military movements in the Gulf and other information - this is all talk with forces moving behind the scenes for a military confrontation. Cease fire means they were firing. Weren't official attacks from Russia according to Western media over weeks ago. Why a cease fire, if no one is attacking anyone?

    RUSSIA
    ..............

Russia is maneuvering at the UN, hoping to get the Georgian breakaways in on any sort of informal talk.  Georgia is having none of it.
Russia has been told to get the h--l out of Georgia.    A joint Russian, Venezuelan flotilla is planned for the future, in 08.
Participants may include, Peter the Great missile cruiser and three other Russian navy ships visiting Venezuela and would be joined by a unit of long-range anti-submarine patrol aircraft.

Russia introduced a draft resolution on imposing an arms embargo on Georgia.

    Our Indian friends say:

Russia recently sold 24 advanced multi-role Su-30MK2 fighter planes to Venezuela, similar to those acquired by India, as well as
dozens of helicopters, and other weapons. Washington bitterly protested the deals.

I wonder, Could we fit all that on the Mount Whitney?

Too Bad The Chechens Didn't Have Pipeline Ties With The US

    ........................................................................................................................................

    First Chechen War
    Main article: First Chechen War

The First Chechen War occurred in a two year period lasting from 1994 to 1996, when Russian forces attempted to stop Chechnya from seceding. Despite overwhelming manpower, weaponry and air support, the Russian forces were unable to establish effective control over the mountainous area due to many successful Chechen guerrilla raids. The Budyonnovsk hospital hostage crisis in 1995 shocked the Russian public, and discredited the Russian Government. Widespread demoralization of the Russian forces in the area prompted Russian President Boris Yeltsin to declare a ceasefire in 1996 and sign a peace treaty a year later.

The war was disastrous for both sides. Most estimates give figures of between 3,500 and 7,500 Russian military dead, between 3,000 and 15,000 Chechen militants dead, and no fewer than 35,000 civilian deaths—a minimum total of 41,500 dead. Others have cited figures in the range 80,000 to 100,000.[4]

     Inter-war period
Main article: Chechen Republic of Ichkeria

After the war, parliamentary and presidential elections took place in January 1997 in Chechnya and brought to power Aslan Maskhadov, chief of staff and prime minister in the Chechen coalition government, for a five-year term. Maskhadov sought to maintain Chechen sovereignty while pressing Moscow to help rebuild the republic, whose formal economy and infrastructure were virtually destroyed.[5] Russia continued to send money for the rehabilitation of the republic; it also provided pensions and funds for schools and hospitals. Most of these transfers were stolen by Chechen authorities and divided between favoured warlords.[6] Nearly half a million people (40% of Chechnya's prewar population) have been internally displaced and lived in refugee camps or overcrowded villages. [7] The economy was destroyed. Two Russian brigades were stationed in Chechnya and did not leave.[7]

In lieu of the devastated economic structure, kidnapping emerged as the principal source of income countrywide, procuring over $200 million during the three year independence of the chaotic fledgling state [8] but victims were rarely killed.[9] In 1998, 176 people had been kidnapped, and 90 of them had been released during the same year according to official accounts. President Maskhadov started a major campaign against hostage-takers, and on October 25, 1998, Shadid Bargishev, Chechnya's top anti-kidnapping official, was killed in a remote controlled car bombing. Bargishev's colleagues then insisted they would not be intimidated by the attack and would go ahead with their offensive. Political violence and religious extremism, blamed on "Wahhabism", was rife as well. In 1998, a state of emergency was declared by the authorities in Grozny. Tensions led to the open clashes such as the July 1998 confrontation in Gudermes between the Chechen National Guard and Islamist militants.

    Second Chechen War
    Main article: Second Chechen War

In August 1999, the IIPB began an unsuccessful incursion into the neighbouring Russian republic of Dagestan in favor of the Shura of Dagestan who sought independence from Russia. (see Dagestan War). In September, a series of apartment bombings took place in several Russian cities, including Moscow, which were blamed on the Chechens. In response, after a prolonged air campaign of retaliatory strikes against the Ichkerian regime a ground offensive began in October 1999 effectively starting the Second Chechen War. Much better organised and planned than in the first Chechen War, the military actions by the Russian Federal forces enabled them to re-establish control over most regions. After the re-capture of Grozny in February 2000, the Ichkerian regime fell apart. Russia has severely disabled the Chechen rebel movement, although violence still occurs throughout the North Caucasus.[10] Nonetheless Russia was successful in installing a pro-Moscow Chechen regime, and the most prominent separatist leaders died including former President Aslan Maskhadov and radical warlord Shamil Basayev.

    from Russia-

Russia...opened the way to what the U.S. and the West have sought in recent years -
to direct the revision of the fundamental pillars of all modern world order.
While recognizing Abkhazia and Southern Ossetia,
Russia abandoned the principle role of chief defender of
the inviolability of international relations that prevailed after the Second World War,
had only been upgraded in early 1990 - x after the collapse of the Soviet Union and continued (mainly as a result of Moscow's support) to operate until now .

There are even some logic in that Dmitry Medvedev - the first Russian president,
emerged as a politician even after the Cold War - vbil last nail in the coffin of this very system that has long lost its effectiveness and relevance, but has increasingly led the world community to a standstill.

Russians really believe this stuff, partly because the government has, in the last few years, taken control of most mass media in the country. Russia also has a new set of "satellite states" (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) who all expressed approval of the "peacekeeping operation in Georgia." These Russian allies are all nations that were formerly part of the Soviet Union, and are still dependent on Russia for economic or political aid.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has provided Georgia with a billion dollars of economic and military aid. This includes NATO sending technicians and equipment to link Georgia's air defense radars with the NATO system. That means anything the Russian Air Force does over Georgia, will immediately show up in NATO air defense command centers.

Putin has gone much too far and does not understand exactly what he is doing, not just stirring up a hornet's nest in all the countries that used to belong to the Communist world but also leading people in the West to ask whether they can do business with this man. That involves investment, it involves creditworthiness, it involves the sanctity of Russian investments abroad, it involves cooperation with the European Union, and in fact the strongest thing that's been done so far is what the EU decided yesterday, to suspend meetings on the EU-Russia partnership program. What they've said is, "We're going to send a team to look, and we're going to judge whether the Russians are following the six points of the cease-fire agreement with French President Sarkozy, and decide whether it's worth having this EU-Russian summit on November 14."

Russia is Back. But Which Russia?

    22/08/2008

    By Amir Taheri

    excerpt-

Ever since Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Georgia this month, the headlines have screamed: “Russia Is Back!” Supposing this is the case, one might ask: which Russia is back?

Students of history might suggest a return of the Russia of Tsar Alexander I. After all, it was under him that Russia first invaded Georgia in 1801, detaching it from Iran, and triggering a chain of conquests that pushed the Iranians out of the Caucasus and, by 1830, extended the frontiers of the Tsarist Empire to the River Aras.

This is a massive surge of information which is in complete contradiction with other sources outside the main stream media. The most powerful part of the Russian Fleet is preparing to head to the Caribbean with nuclear arms, planes, and subs.

This is serious and so is the problems with a major Russian military about to be present on our door step. It is in the SOP of whatever to flood the net with data obscurring what is happening in Bird Flu (the net is almost barren of any significant or accurate information on the spread or mutation of the bird flu virus, and this also applies to the grave sitatuion with Iran, the Persian Gulf, and this continual 'business as usual' after Russia invaded a country.

Russia is in expansion and readiness mode. They are forming powerful ties with Iran, and Iran in supporting the terrorists who are preparing to attack Israel.

The problem is once the flashpoints go off, only the preppers will have much chance of survival. There is a problem. Russia is sendng its most powerful warship and fleet towards the U.S. and forming a powerful (another powerful) tie with Venezuela. This can't just be passed on to the next admistraton.

    All is not well.

About 200 EU monitors are gearing up to hold positions in the buffer zones by October first.  Russia has claimed these independent nations to be needing protection by over 7,000 Russian soldiers.

    Official Residence

Currently, the President of Ukraine is Viktor Yushchenko who was sworn in on January 23, 2005.

According to the Constitution of Ukraine, the President is the guarantor of the state sovereignty and territorial integrity, the observance of the Constitution of Ukraine and human and civil rights and liberties. The President is elected by the citizens of Ukraine by way of a universal, equal and direct vote for a five-year term.

Before the constitutional reform, the Prime minister was usually dismissed unilaterally by the President. After the reform the Prime minister can only be dismissed by the parliament. Formally, the Verkhovna Rada needs to pass a resolution of no confidence in the Cabinet, which must result in the PM's resignation. However, the parliament cannot put the resolution on vote within one year after the approval of the Cabinet's programme

    DOES RUSSIA SLEEP NIGHTS?

    Georgian War fallout Lingers on...

    Let's Re-Cap

Both sides erred big time.  Russia looked the Heavy.

The on going Russian passport scheme and long term messing in Georgia, painfully obvious.

The Russian stock market took a hit.

Foreign business fled or thought twice about investing in Russia.

    The Ruble fell.

Russia did not comply with a signed agreement, thereby humiliating the President of the EU.

A terrified Poland ran to sign a missile site agreement.

    Ukraine is seeing Red.

There's that old saying, two wrongs never make a right.

When I think of what a huge country Russia is and look at the maps of the web of pipeline$

bringing in immense wealth... I just can't fathom Mr. Putin having time to jerk the chains of his small

neighbors in such an unrelenting fashion as he has these past 7 years or so.

Russia sends ships on exercises in U.S. 'backyard'

MOSCOW, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Russian warships set sail on Monday for manoeuvres in the Caribbean area calculated to demonstrate to the United States Moscow's return as a global power on the military and political stage.

The exercises, drawing on a strong alliance with Venezuela's anti-American President Hugo Chavez, will be closely watched by Western navies as the first such projection of Russian power close to U.S. shores since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Navy spokesman Igor Dygalo said the nuclear-powered heavy missile cruiser Peter the Great and antisubmarine destroyer Admiral Chabanenko left their base near Murmansk with two support ships for the 15,000 mile passage to Venezuela.

Washington denounced Moscow for its crushing of pro-Western Georgia in a brief conflict last month over two rebel provinces. Russia then expressed anger over the appearance of U.S. warships in the Black Sea region -- which it considers its sphere of influence -- to deliver aid to Georgia.

Russia's cultivation of leftist Chavez and renewed interest in Cuba and ports of call in the Middle East bear unmistakable echoes of the Cold War, when two superpowers vied for influence.

Dygalo declined to comment on media reports that nuclear submarines would participate in the exercises and that the warships would visit Syria, where Russia has signalled an interest in developing bases.

"During the trip the ships will take part in the first joint exercises with the Venezuelan navy aimed at training rescue drills and operations against sea terrorists," Dygalo said of the mission, expected to last several months.

In the years after the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia's once-proud armed forces, deprived of funding, declined rapidly. Ships lacked fuel to put to sea, warplanes were grounded, troops neglected.

With the revival of the national economy and soaring oil revenues, Kremlin leaders poured money into the armed forces, as a symbol of revived national prowess; though Western analysts say their fleet is still in great need of modernisation.

    MEDITERRANEAN

Earlier this month Moscow sent Tu-160 strategic bombers to Venezuela for what most analysts say was part of Moscow's reaction to U.S. deals to deploy elements of its missile defence system in Eastern Europe, close to Russia's borders. Moscow regards the system as a threat to its nuclear deterrent, but Washington insists it is not aimed at Russian interests.

Russian media reported on Monday that the naval group could be larger and more heavily-armed than realised in the West and could make unexpected ports of call.

"The Russian warships will be followed by anti-submarine airplanes and nuclear-powered submarines with missiles on board," Russia's Nezavisimaya Gazeta daily said on Monday. It gave no further details.

Another Russian daily, Izvestia, said that on their way to Venezuela, the Russian flotilla will detour through the Gibraltar Strait and into the Mediterranean, where U.S. navy vessels are also deployed.
