Bird flu reportedly claims another life in Bali
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Fri, 02/24/2012 10:21 PM

The Ministry of Health announced the death of a 12-year boy, identified only as DWM, from Badung regency, Bali. Avian flu – more widely known as bird flu – was suspected as the cause.

According to the press release, DWM first fell ill on Feb.11. He was rushed to the nearest hospital four days later because his feverish condition had shown no signs of improvement. On Feb.20, it was feared that the young boy had contracted bird flu. He passed away the next day.

The ministry had deployed officials to screen the family house and but could not find definitive indications confirming bird flu.

To date, the ministry has recorded 186 bird flu cases in Indonesia, with 154 cases resulting in death. Bird flu first became a scare across the country in 2005. (dic)

Poor little guy :(
In case people dismiss this as yet another statistic, you have to realize that death by bird flu is often excruciatingly painful, and not always quick. It's not the influenza that we all know as a seasonal annoyance. Once the infection takes hold and provokes a cytokine storm in the victim, the organs that have receptors to which the virus can attach (lungs, intestinal tract, and possibly the kidneys, liver and brain) can be damaged almost to the point of liquefaction. It's a nasty, nasty way to die and I only hope this little boy didn't suffer too much.
