Some of this is not news - However the update with the conference meeting in September is as to discussion of a 4 part vaccine. The question is- does this vaccine target what will be the prevalent strains circulating the flu season which begins today, October 5, 2013.
On February 27, 2013, VRBAC met and approved for the United States the following WHO-recommended http://www.fda.gov/AdvisoryCommittees/CommitteesMeetingMaterials/BloodVaccinesandOtherBiologics/VaccinesandRelatedBiologicalProductsAdvisoryCommittee/ucm337092.htm" rel="nofollow - composition for the Northern Hemisphere 2013-2014 influenza vaccine http://www.cdc.gov/Other/disclaimer.html" rel="nofollow"> : - an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
- an A(H3N2) virus antigenically like the cell-propagated prototype virus A/Victoria/361/2011;
- a B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like (B/Yamagata lineage) virus.
Compared to the 2012-2013 seasonal influenza vaccine, the H1N1 component is the same, the H3N2 component is the same http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6223a5.htm?s_cid=mm6223a5_e" rel="nofollow - * , and the B component is different.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This season, most seasonal influenza vaccines will have the above-listed
three virus components, but some quadrivalent (four-component vaccine)
will also be available. http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/vaccine/quadrivalent.htm" rel="nofollow - Quadrivalent vaccine
this year includes the three viruses listed in the bullets above, and
also a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like (B/Victoria lineage) virus. _____________________________________________________________________________

26 September 2013
It is recommended that trivalent vaccines for use in the 2014
influenza season (southern hemisphere winter) contain the following:
- an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virusa;
- an A/Texas/50/2012 (H3N2)-like virusb*;
- a B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like virus.
It is recommended that quadrivalent vaccines containing two
influenza B viruses contain the above three viruses and a
B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.
a A/Christchurch/16/2010 is an A/California/7/2009-like virus.
b A/Texas/50/2012 is an A(H3N2) virus that following
adaptation to growth in eggs has maintained antigenic properties similar
to the majority of recently circulating cell-propagated A(H3N2) viruses
including A/Victoria/361/2011.
