In the Denver news: GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Officials say a flu outbreak among patients at a veterans nursing home in Grand Junction has prompted them to close the facility to most visitors.

VA Medical Center spokesman Paul Sweeney said Sunday that 10 of the 27 patients in the facility tested positive for the virus.

DENVER - Local hospitals have been busy treating influenza patients but they have been hampered somewhat because nurses have also come down with it.

The good news is the length of stays by flu patients is down significantly from 2013.

St. Anthony's reported 219 flu cases diagnosed in December, with 57 of those sick enough to require hospital admission. The average age of those admitted was 77.

University of Colorado Hospital treated 121 people during the flu season with 93 of those admitted.

At Lutheran Medical Center, 106 people have been admitted to the hospital for the flu since Oct. 1. Most of the admissions were in the last two or three weeks. They've had 360 positive tests since Nov. 1.

Good Samaritan Hospital in Broomfield reports 110 people admitted for the flu since Nov.17. Thirty of those are still in the hospital now.

Overall, the average hospital stay among the hospitals polled by 7NEWS has been 1 or 2 days. In 2013, the average stay was one to two weeks.

Forty-two Larimer County residents have been hospitalized with influenza in the past week, bringing the cumulative number of such cases since Oct. 1 to a total of 83.

According to Dr. Adrienne LeBailly, Larimer County’s public health director, “"his may become the worst year for influenza in Larimer County in the past decade. Hospitalized flu cases have been required to be reported to public health agencies since 2004. The 2012-13 flu season was also bad in Larimer County, with 103 total hospitalizations by the end of the flu season, but we are not near the end of this season’s outbreak here."

About two-thirds of those hospitalized here have been over age 70, and half have been 80 or older. About half a dozen nursing home and assisted living centers have reported outbreaks; some have put residents and staff on preventive antiviral medications.

The Colorado Dept. of Health reported that for the week of Dec. 20, children less than 6 months represented only 2 percent of all hospitalizations but have the second highest hospitalization rate (52 percent). The 65+ year age group accounts for the largest proportion of hospitalizations (54.4 percent) and the highest hospitalization rate (70.8 percent).

The state health department reported the first flu-associated child death for the 2014/15 season during the week ending Dec. 13.

During past seasons when influenza A (H3N2) viruses have predominated, higher overall and age-specific hospitalization rates and more mortality have been observed, especially among older people, very young children, and persons with certain chronic medical conditions compared with seasons during which influenza A (H1N1) or influenza B viruses have predominated.
