Subject: OT - NASA Big Announcement
Date Posted: July 22 2015 at 4:10pm
This is Off Topic, but could be big news. Looks like NASA is about to announce they found a new Earth. If so, there undoubtedly would be life of some sort. If suppose lets hope not hostile. First contact.
NASA hints at ‘another Earth’ in lead-up to big announcement
WASHINGTON — NASA has some big news in the hunt for Earth-like planets.
NASA plans to share a discovery from its Kepler Space Telescope in a news conference scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday, http://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-hosts-media-teleconference-to-announce-latest-kepler-discoveries - a press release announced.
Calling a news conference for the Kepler Telescope, a mission
dedicated to finding Earth-like planets in so-called hospitable zones,
is unusual. According to CTV, a tantamount goal of the Kepler mission is
to find Earth-like planets suitable for supporting the existence of
liquid water, a necessary ingredient for life.
The mission seeks planets a perfect distance away from a star that
would likely maintain liquid water, known as the Goldilocks Zone. Too
close to a star and water evaporates. Too far and water freezes to ice.
The announcement of a press conference has lit the Internet on fire
with speculation. Many hope the Kepler Mission engineers will announce
finding an Earth size planet with an abundance of oxygen.
“Abundance of oxygen suggests the existence of life,” one Redditor
wrote. “Oxygen is too reactive to stay in an atmosphere without
constantly being replenished.” http://q13fox.com/2015/07/22/report-nasa-hints-at-another-earth-in-lead-up-to-big-announcement/

I heard it was one of the guys on the space station ordered McDonald's and chucked the toy earth globe to the gods.
That would be a really neat discovery, Albert. Hopefully it's more than just a wiggling spot a billion light years away, though.

Could be the great space race for warp drive.
Alcubierre drive The Alcubierre drive or Alcubierre warp drive (or Alcubierre metric, referring to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metric_tensor#Lorentzian_metrics_from_relativity - metric tensor ) is a speculative idea based on a solution of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einstein_field_equations - Einstein's field equations in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_relativity - general relativity as proposed by theoretical physicist https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miguel_Alcubierre - Miguel Alcubierre , by which a spacecraft could achieve https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faster-than-light - faster-than-light travel if a configurable https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density - energy-density field lower than that of vacuum (that is, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_mass - negative mass ) could be created.
Rather than exceeding the speed of light within a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_reference_frame - local reference frame ,
a spacecraft would traverse distances by contracting space in front of
it and expanding space behind it, resulting in effective
faster-than-light travel. Objects cannot accelerate to the speed of
light within normal spacetime; instead, the Alcubierre drive shifts
space around an object so that the object would arrive at its
destination faster than light would in normal space. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive#cite_note-Krasnikov2003-1 - [1]
Although the metric proposed by Alcubierre is mathematically valid
(in that the proposal is consistent with the Einstein field equations),
it may not be physically meaningful, in which case a drive will not be
possible. Even if it is physically meaningful, its mere existence does
not necessarily mean that a drive can be constructed. The proposed
mechanism of the Alcubierre drive implies a negative https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density - energy density and therefore requires https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exotic_matter - exotic matter .
So if exotic matter with the correct properties does not exist then the
drive could not be constructed. However, at the close of his original
paper https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive#cite_note-Alcubierre-2 - [2] Alcubierre argued (following an argument developed by physicists analyzing traversable https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormhole - wormholes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive#cite_note-3 - [3] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive#cite_note-4 - [4] ) that the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casimir_effect - Casimir vacuum between parallel plates could fulfill the negative-energy requirement for the Alcubierre drive.
Another possible issue is that, although the Alcubierre metric is
consistent with Einstein's equations, general relativity does not
incorporate quantum mechanics. Some physicists have presented arguments
to suggest that a theory of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_gravity - quantum gravity
(which would incorporate both theories) would eliminate those solutions
in general relativity that allow for backwards time travel (see the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology_protection_conjecture - chronology protection conjecture ) and thus make the Alcubierre drive invalid. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcubierre_drive

Quick story - I was listening to the live broadcast online the morning it was announced, and to be honest, my plan was to listen to
it live and to listen very closely for the new name of the planet to be
announced to buy the .com, after the name of the planet. had my finger on the trigger to race and buy it the split second it was announced. I was in fact able to
get the .org, http://kepler452b.org/ - kepler452b.org ,
as an "insider" of some sort got the .com the day before the
announcement. No fair. The .net and all the extensions were gone in
about 10 seconds. Still
trying to figure out if it will ever be worth anything, but for $8.99,
who cares. Was still a small victory in the race to buy a domain. Also
got http://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2F452b.org%2F&h=JAQEO9qaKAQFIfNq7ixwO9zRXPR5EUSHCHrbr3XYPzrNP6g&enc=AZPXrY_nxcqqsM1VAtwXvIdJ22KOFgn2FucRs-FWKLQKLXMlB1Z0eEbxAwCef4PVaWJVmPwLoXQbzkdmnvq4yfcUF1I1Eh-Ao7jJGB2iaF8pQvBPNbqqP-kB54v4SHexPwke8QwR6f4MZQBn_yyZjPBxHyZobwk8SrED_Dx3ZlAd8o92EoQtQan8VKNDQUG-oAY&s=1 - 452b.org ,
and the remaining extensions for that were also gone in seconds.
People go crazy in the domain buying market, lol. I was listening to
the online audio broadcast, which was 30 seconds ahead of the live
stream, so that probably made the difference.
Anyway, last night I received an email from a guy from China wanting to buy it, kepler452b.org. He seems like he has money and wants it. Starting to wonder if he could be with the Chinese gov't and they want to get in the game, since NASA discovered it. Kind of like the big space race. The problem is that I have no clue what it's worth. It could be worth 3k, or a million, and have absolutely no idea. For the hell of it I said $35,000.00, lol. Curious to what he will do. One thing is for sure, the second they announced the name, I was already logged on to my Gadaddy account, and purchased the name fast, with no errors heading to the checkout, and I was hard to beat. Losing 1 second would have cost me, and undoubtedly thousands of people around the world were trying. Like I said, within seconds afterwards, all extensions were gone, i.e. the worthless ones like .biz, .us. mobi, .xyz, and ones i have never heard of like .expert. Complete wipe out in seconds. In fact, I actually had the .net and .org locked up together when I was doing the purchase, and then noticed that the .net wasn't in my cart, but I knew if I would have gone back to grab it real quick I might have lost the .org, so did the purchase real quick without hesitation. Right after the purchase, I went back to grab the .net (2 clicks), and complete wipe out, everything was gone. Real glad I didn't go back for that .net and waste 2 seconds.
I just do these things for a hobby, and completely clueless if it's worth anything.

Time to start packing up... 452b here we come.
NASA scientists take first steps to building faster-than-light warp engine that could make Star Trek a realityResearchers at the NASA's Johnson
Space Center are convinced they can turn science fiction to fact and
prove warp speed might someday be possible.
To
do this, they would need to break, or at least bend the rules of time
and space famously laid out by Albert Einstein over 50-years ago.
Undeterred,
Dr. Harold G. White and his team have begun small-scale experiments
using infinitesimally small photons that could have galactic sized
ramifications for the future of space travel for mankind.
Reality: Could warp speed - made popular in culture by Star Trek - one day become a reality
Dr. White, 43, is
trying to manipulate or 'warp' the trajectory of a photon - put simply,
he wants to see whether he can fold time and space around the photon to
allow it to travel a greater distance, but at the same speed.
'Space has been expanding since the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago,' said Dr. White to the New York Times. And we know that when you look at
some of the cosmology models, there were early periods of the universe
where there was explosive inflation, where two point would've went
receding away from each other at very rapid speeds.
'Nature can do it. So the question is, can we do it?'
Theoretical Warp Speed: This graph illustrates who Dr. Alcubierre postulates mankind could one create warp speeds in space
Despite the speed of
light being seen as an absolute, Dr. White has been inspired by Mexican
physicist, Miguel Alcubierre, who postulated a theory that allowed for
faster-than-light but without contradicting Einstein
His
theory was published in 1994 and involved enormous amounts of energy
being used to expand and contract space itself - thereby generating a
'warp bubble' in which a spacecraft would travel.
Allowing
space and time to act as the propellant by pulling the craft through
the bubble, Dr. White explained it to the New York Times as stepping
onto a moving walkway at an airport.
Despite
Dr. Alcubierre stating his theory was simply conjecture, Dr. White
thinks he and his team are edging towards making the realm of warp speed
attainable.
However,
Dr. White admits that his research is still small-scale and is light
years away from any type of engine that could be constructed into a
space ship like the USS Enterprise.
Galactic Speed Limit: Professor Albert Einstein as he attended a session of the Eighth American Scientific Congress in 1940
NASA is cautiously
supportive of Dr. White's research with Steve Sich, the deputy director
of engineering at the Johnson Space Center daying, 'You always have to
be looking towards the future.'
Holding
up his iPhone, Sich said, 'Forty years ago, this was Star Trek, Captain
Kirk talking on a communicator whenever he wanted to. But today it
exists because people made the battery technology that allows his device
to exist, worked on the software technology, worked on the
computational, the touch screen.'
Developing
any form of warp drive would allow mankind to cut travel times to other
star systems from tens of thousands of years to months.
Indeed,
Richard Obousy, a supporter of the work of Dr. White says that more
money should be put into developing the technology behind warp drives.
Dr. Miguel Alcubierre's theories on warped wormholes in space have inspired NASA's researchers at the Johnson Space Center
The Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas is where Dr. White and his experimental research is taking shape
'We tend to
overestimate what we can do on short time scales, but I think we
massively underestimate what we can do on longer time scales,' said
Obousy, who is president of Icarus Interstellar, a group working on a
faster than light design.
Hoping to stop anyone getting carried away, Dr. Alcubierre pointed out a massive structural problem with any warp drive.
'At
speeds larger than the speed of light, the front of the warp bubble
cannot be reached by any signal from within the ship,' he said.
'This does not just mean we can’t turn it off; it is much worse. It means we can’t even turn it on in the first place.'

Thanks oneflu. I'm with you techno, packing up now.
Great read about what Earth 2.0 would be like. Kepler-452b is 60% wider
and 5 times more massive than earth, so the gravity would be a lot
stronger. You would essentially be weighed down. That means if there was
life there, it would be significantly stronger than us. Might be some
strong aliens there you don't want to mess with! Humans would get
stronger there as well. The sun is 20% brighter, but not necessarily
hotter. The oceans could be dried up, but they think maybe not with the
gravity being so strong. It has more land than us, but we have too much
ocean anyway. It actually seems like a superior planet across the
board.
Kepler-452b: What It Would Be Like to Live On Earth's 'Cousin'
Kepler-452b may be Earth's close cousin, but living on the newfound world would still be an alien experience.
A group of pioneers magically transported to the surface of http://www.space.com/30026-earth-twin-kepler-452b-exoplanet-discovery.html - Kepler-452b
— which is the closest thing to an "Earth twin" yet discovered,
researchers announced yesterday (July 23) — would instantly realize they
weren't on their http://www.space.com/30034-earth-cousin-exoplanet-kepler-452b-life.html#">home
planet anymore. (And magic, or some sort of warp drive, must be invoked
for such a journey, since Kepler-452b lies 1,400 light-years away.)
Kepler-452 is 60 percent wider than Earth and probably about five times
more massive, so its surface gravity is considerably stronger than the
pull people are used to here. Any hypothetical explorers would thus feel
about twice as heavy on the alien world as they do on Earth,
researchers said. [ http://www.space.com/30027-exoplanet-kepler-452b-earth-twin-pictures.html - Exoplanet Kepler 452b: Closest Earth Twin in Pictures ]
"It might be quite challenging at first," Jon Jenkins, of NASA's Ames
Research Center in Moffett Field, California, said during a news
conference yesterday. Jenkins is http://www.space.com/30034-earth-cousin-exoplanet-kepler-452b-life.html#">data analysis lead for the space agency's http://www.space.com/17383-kepler-planet-hunting-nasa-telescope-infographic.html - Kepler spacecraft , which discovered Kepler-452b.
But visitors to the exoplanet would probably be able to meet that
challenge, said former astronaut John Grunsfeld, associate administrator
of NASA's Science Mission Directorate. After all, he said, firefighters
and backpackers routinely carry heavy loads, mimicking (albeit
temporarily) the effect of increased surface gravity.
"If we were there, we'd get stronger," Grunsfeld said. "Our bones would
actually get stronger. It would be like a workout every day."
The high-gravity environment would probably lead to significant changes
in the bodies of Kepler-452b colonists over longer time spans, he and
Jenkins said.
"I suspect that, over time, we would adapt to the conditions, and
perhaps become stockier over a long period of many generations," Jenkins
said.
Other features of life on Kepler-452b would be more familiar. For example, the http://www.space.com/17738-exoplanets.html - exoplanet orbits a solar-type star at about the same distance at which Earth circles the sun. [ http://www.space.com/28355-living-on-other-planets.html - Living on Other Planets: What Would It Be Like? ]
"It would feel a lot like home, from the standpoint of the sunshine
that you would experience," Jenkins said. Earth plants "would
photosynthesize, just perfectly fine," he added.
Imagining other aspects of life on Kepler-452b requires much more
speculation, since it's too far away to get a good look at. Researchers
suspect that the planet is rocky, like Earth, but they don't know for
sure. Kepler-452b probably has a thick atmosphere, liquid water and
active volcanoes, but these are best guesses based on modeling work.
Models also suggest that Kepler-452b might soon experience a runaway greenhouse effect, similar to the one that changed http://www.space.com/44-venus-second-planet-from-the-sun-brightest-planet-in-solar-system.html - Venus from a potentially habitable world billions of years ago to the sweltering hothouse it is today, researchers said.
Kepler-452b's star is apparently older than the sun — 6 billion years,
compared to 4.5 billion years. It's thus in a more energetic phase of
its life cycle than http://www.space.com/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html - the sun is;
indeed, the star is about 10 percent larger and 20 percent brighter
than Earth's sun. (That means the sunlight on Kepler-452b, while
familiar to explorers from Earth, would not be exactly equivalent.)
The increased http://www.space.com/30034-earth-cousin-exoplanet-kepler-452b-life.html#">energy
output of its sun might currently be causing Kepler-452b to heat up and
lose its oceans — if the planet does indeed harbor oceans — to
evaporation, subsequent breakup by ultraviolet light and atmospheric
escape.
Such a scenario likely won't occur on Kepler-452b for another 500
million years or so, assuming estimates for the planet's size and the
star's age are accurate, Jenkins said. (The stronger gravity of larger
planets allows them to hang on to their surface water for longer periods
of time in such situations than smaller worlds can.)
"But, you know, we don't know exactly," Jenkins said.
So he and other members of the discovery team helped devise an artist's
concept that imagines how Kepler-452b would look if a runaway http://www.livescience.com/37743-greenhouse-effect.html - greenhouse effect were beginning to unfold.
The illustration shows "not oceans, but residual bodies of water that
are highly concentrated in minerals after the oceans are largely gone,
and you have lakes and pools and rivers left," Jenkins said.
"It's a fascinating thing to think about, and I think it gives us an
opportunity to take a pause and reflect on our own environment that we
find ourselves in," he added. "We've been lucky and fortunate to live in
a habitable zone for the last several billion years, and we'd like that
to continue on." http://www.space.com/30034-earth-cousin-exoplanet-kepler-452b-life.html

Funny..... http://www.kepler452b.com/. I took a look too, thanks. Wonder how I can make money off our Kepler452b.org, or 452b.net or 452b.org.
As far as the people who bought all the other domain names, and their locations look at this.

Almost like the Olympics for buying domains. Glad we brought home a couple medals of sorts.
Should also add, that the guy in the UK who bought kepler452b.com bought his the day before the announcement somehow, and the guy in China who bought 452B.com bought it March 10th. Lucky for them as I would have beaten them. Those names were gone within seconds, and just glad someone in the U.S. got a few.

Ya... I agree. The U.S. did all the great work on that one.. NASA themselves should have taken the .com. to be honest. That and the .org.
Funny. Since ours is forwarded here to AFT, I feel like putting welcome to Kepler452B.org at the top. I could see people from other countries scratching their head over it in confusion. Avian Flu and Kepler452B?
I personally like the .org better than the .net in this particular area, and almost as much as the .com. I wouldn't trade the .org for the .net. 452B.net and .org are almost just as good. After I got Kepler452b.org, I raced back and got 452b without thinking twice about it. Again it was a smooth run to the checkout cart with no errors or delays. Beat them bad on that one. So hell with them. We did better than all of them as a whole, or as any single person did worldwide.

They've been studying 452b for quite awhile. Wonder if they have seen any sort of blimps of light or anomalies traveling in the outer space region of the planet. Surely there must be life there. I'll bet it drives those scientists crazy knowing they can't get there. This should really inspire NASA and scientists around the world to develop a faster mode of travel. Mankind has always found a way to get where ever they want to go and explore. It's our way, you might say. It's a shame that we have so many countries and great minds working on developing military weapons to blow each other up instead of collectively working together and looking to the future, and exploration. God we're truly primitive.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I suppose though if an inhabitable plannet were found close enough to reach conventionally in a dozen years or so maybe all would come together on achieving that. But a million years at light speed? It'd be easier for us to hold still and just move the universe over some. And I guess if they were right now able to take a snapshot of Kepler and capture a metropolis with humanoids, it would be a million years old and they may be extinct by now. How can they even see anything that far anyways? Hey, what travels faster than the speed of light? The speed of vision.

Good point. I can just see us with a high powered telescope getting a close-up on kepler, and they're staring back with their telescope, and we're both just waving back and forth to each other, lol. Maybe that's about it.
http://www.dailydot.com/tags/nasa - NASA announced Thursday that they'd found an http://www.dailydot.com/geek/kepler-earth-cousin/ - older, bigger cousin to Earth about 1,400 light-years away. The planet and its solar system are so similar to Earth that NASA http://www.dailydot.com/tags/science/ - scientists dubbed it “Earth 2.0.” So what would it take to visit that planet? And how could Starfleet of http://www.dailydot.com/tags/star-trek/ - Star Trek , equipped with ships capable of traveling faster than the speed of light, do it better? First of all, some definitions for this thought experiment. The speed
of light is 299,792,458 meters per second or roughly 671 million miles
per hour. A light year is defined as the distance a particle of light
can travel in one year. So 1,400 light-years equates to roughly 8.2 trillion miles. http://www.dailydot.com/tags/pluto/ - Pluto ,
by comparison, is just under 3 billion miles away from Earth—that’s
around 0.03 percent of the distance between Earth and Kepler-452b—and it
took a probe using Jupiter as a http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2007/26feb_grandtheft/ - gravitational slingshot nearly 10 years to get there. Of course, interstellar travel is totally NBD to Starfleet and their ship, the Enterprise. On the http://www.dailydot.com/tags/reddit/ - subreddit r/theydidthemath, redditors https://www.reddit.com/r/theydidthemath/comments/3edc9i/request_how_long_would_it_take_the_starship/ - calculated how long it would take the Starship Enterprise to reach Kepler-452b from Earth. According to redditor alexander1701: The
Enterprise D, however (according to the writers guide) uses v= Warp10/3
*C. At Warp 9, it travels 1516.38c, [1516.38 times the speed of light]
and would get there in 336 days, 23 hours, 41 minutes, a full year
faster than the Enterprise A. OK, getting to Kepler-452b is no problemo for the Enterprise (and many other sci-fi spaceships, as this http://www.dailydot.com/geek/fastest-ship-speed-millennium-falcon-tardis/ - infographic illustrates). But what about current humans? “Quite the road trip”Let’s say we wanted to send a probe, similar to http://www.dailydot.com/tags/new-horizons/ - New Horizons ,
to the planet. Currently, the probe is traveling at about 36,000 miles
per hour. At that rate, it would take roughly 26 million years to reach
its destination, according to Aaron Lee, a PhD candidate in theoretical
astrophysics at the University of California, Berkeley. “Modern humans have only been around for about 200,000 years, so that’s quite the road trip,” Lee said. He
also mentioned that the probe would have to withstand high levels of
radiation and freezing temperatures as it drifted through the emptiness
of http://www.dailydot.com/tags/space/ - space . More concerning, though, would be the probe’s weight. To
produce the breakneck velocities of New Horizons takes a lot of energy,
and the further you’re going the more energy you’ll need to get there.
Energy is provided by fuel, which, unfortunately for us, is not
weightless. But what about sending people there? In a hypothetical
spacecraft that was able to travel as fast as New Horizons without
killing its passengers, you would still have the time issue. Another
r/theydidthemath thread calculated how many generations of people would https://www.reddit.com/r/theydidthemath/comments/3ed1td/request_how_many_generations_would_it_take_a_ship/ - live and die
during the trip if a space shuttle could travel at 10 percent the speed
of light. That would be 500 generations (generation defined by 25
years). But 500 generations is more than have lived since the dawn of
human civilization, another redditor pointed out. That’s like living
your entire life inside a machine and devoted to a mission conceived by
cavemen. Existential
crises aside, humans would have a more pressing problem of the
radiation mentioned earlier. People subjected to prolonged periods in
space are known to suffer from a range of physical problems thought to
be caused by the higher levels of radiation and the constant free fall
of low gravity. These problems include but are not limited to: muscular atrophy, loss in bone density, and permanent alteration to vision. NASA is working out some of those problems right now as they gear up to send a manned http://www.dailydot.com/geek/nasa-mars-2030/ - mission to Mars sometime in the 2030s. But that trip is slated to take a mere four years from Earth to Mars. What about a wormhole?A
wormhole is something of a shortcut through spacetime, Lee said. To use
a trite but apt metaphor, imagine a piece of paper with two points on
it—one representing Earth and the other Kepler-452b. If you were to
travel between the points in a straight line, that would be like
traveling through space normally. But if you fold the paper in half and
punch a hole through the two points with a pencil, that would be like
using a wormhole. And while wormholes theoretically exist, “they are very unstable and tend to destroy themselves very quickly,” Lee said. If
you were lucky to even make it into one, entering a wormhole is a lot
like entering a black hole. You would risk being ripped apart at a
molecular level as you traveled through it. Spool up the FTL?Once
you start traveling faster than the speed of light, crazy stuff starts
to happen. Einstein’s theory of relativity tells us that space and time
are intertwined and “if you screw around with space you screw around
with time,” Lee said. So when you travel faster than light, you
perceive the distance between you and your destination to be shorter; so
you get there faster. That’s great, but unfortunately time and space
around you doesn’t actually change. So while your journey of 1,400
light-years would appear to only take 100 years, 1,400 years still
actually passed in the time people on Earth perceived. If you made a
round trip, to you only 200 years had passed but everyone you knew on
Earth would be long gone after the 2,800-year round trip. Interestingly, Star Trek’s warp drive does account for this time dilation, according to https://www.reddit.com/r/AskScienceFiction/comments/2mwhui/star_trek_why_doesnt_time_dilation_occur_when/ - this thread
on r/asksciencefiction. Apparently, the Enterprise stays within a
bubble of normal spacetime and warps the space around the ship, keeping
the passengers in the same spacetime as everyone else. But the warp drive was invented sometime in the 21st century, so we may be on our way to Kepler-452b pretty soon. Image via NASA http://www.dailydot.com/geek/enterprise-to-kepler-452b/
