M6.8 ? A VERY strong magnitude 6.8 earthquake (now re-calibrated lower to 6.5) has struck California in the Pacific Ocean at the dangerous "Cascadia Subduction Zone" 157 km west of Ferndale, CA.  This is the exact area where "the big one" will begin if it happens, and a 6.5 quake can trigger it!

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake struck at 9:50 AM eastern US time  (0650 local time) at a very shallow depth of only 12 km.

Initially a Tsunami concern existed but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has reported NO TSUNAMI from this earthquake. (Report below)

There is grave danger that today's quake may be a "foreshock" and that it signals the coming of a much stronger, horrific, earthquake, within the next few days.   Such a catastrophic quake can now be triggered in the Cascadia subduction zone because today's quake has destabilized the region.  People on the US west coast are URGED to prepare for such a potential emergency by storing food, water, batteries for flashlights and radios, fueling up their cars in case evacuation is needed.  Have a plan!

That's scary, Josh. The Cascadia fault has the potential to cause a phenomenal amount of damage along a sizeable chunk of the West coast Confused

I hope this quake was the main-big-one and not some form of fore-shock.

On the Solomon-quake(s) risks (so far) of Tsunami seems very limited. Stay safe and informed.

People in coastal-pacific area's should stay informed. There has been a lot of strenght involved in the several major quakes. There will at least be aftershocks. http://www.emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/world/M5/" rel="nofollow - http://www.emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/world/M5/ Today M7,8 Solomon-islands, M6,5 California-coast, M6 China.

Gepubliceerd op 8 dec. 2016

The largest earthquake of the year has struck the West Pacific. Measuring at M8.0 , this event follows the largest North American earthquake of the year which struck as well in California (M6.5) today.

California and the West Pacific were both warned for large movement to occur this week. See the warnings issued here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM9KfNqnNPs" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM9KfNqnNPs Dutchsinse doing up-dates on seismic activity. Warning for more M6+ quakes around the Pacific and for Oklahoma/Texas fracking-zone.

http://www.emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/world/" rel="nofollow - http://www.emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/world/ reporting also some deeper (+100km) quakes. Mariana Island region 246km deep M4,4 this will bring further more shallow quakes wich will transfer via India-Iran-Turkey also towards Europe.

Pressure from the east and west meets in the Mid-Atlantic ridge, I understand from Dutchsinse, and as long as they stay below M5 they proberbly will not do much damage. Volcanic eruptions are pressure related-should go up. Another risk could be quakes in Greenland/Antarctica moving landice into the ocean rising sealevel abruptly.
