Bomb shelter business is booming for Texas builder

As tensions rise between America and North Korea, so do sales at a North Texas bomb shelter company.

Gary Lynch, general manager of the Rising S Company in Murchison, said so many people have been inquiring and buying bomb shelters from his company that he can no longer keep with up how much their sales have grown.

"I quit trying to keep up with the percentages, it just takes time away from everything else," Lynch told Chron.com.

The boom in business comes after it was revealed North Korea has nuclear weapons.

Lynch said most customers are spending between $150,000 to $160,000 for bomb-safe shelters. Many customers are hiring the company to build the shelters as an addition to their new homes as they are being constructed, Lynch said. The company is also getting inquiries from people of all different backgrounds.

"It doesn't matter who you voted for, Clinton of Trump, you want to protect your family," Lynch said. "Doesn't matter your color, your creed, your origin. Everyone sees the threat from overseas."

The Washington Post reported earlier this month that North Korea has missile-ready nuclear weapons. President Donald Trump reacted by saying, "They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen."

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has said his nuclear bombs have the capability of hitting U.S. cities, which Lynch said has pushed people to inquire more about the shelters.

"He could easily get a submarine into the Gulf of Mexico. That leaves every coastal city from Houston to New Orleans to Miami as a target," Lynch said. "The shelters are a form of insurance."

Guam has also become a potential target for North Korea, due to its status as a U.S. territory.

According to its website, the Rising S Company can install shelters that are above ground and underground, attached to the customer's home. Each shelter is custom fit to the customer's needs, Lynch said. The number of people, budget and duration of time that customers may stay in the shelter are all factors of how the shelters are built.

The quarter-inch plate, high grade steel helps keep radiation from seeping into the shelter. According to Ready.gov, heavier and denser materials have a better chance of keeping people from being affected by a nuclear fallout and radiation.
