The conservative Donald Trump and Russia conspiracy theory that doesn't add up

Was Donald Trump's unlikely election victory the result of a Russian influence campaign, or is that an excuse cooked up by Democrats still unwilling to admit "Crooked Hillary" lost fair and square?
Former FBI director Robert Mueller is now leading a special counsel's investigation into Russian interference, and any possible collusion with members of the Trump campaign.
Many Democrats are convinced Mueller will find a "smoking gun". Already http://www.politico.com/story/2017/07/11/donald-trump-jr-emails-smoking-gun-robert-mueller-240414" rel="nofollow - an email from the President's eldest son , Donald Trump Jr, has shown that in June 2016 he was very interested in meeting Russians offering dirt on Mrs Clinton.
And in recent days, https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/8/28/16215710/felix-sater-trump-russia" rel="nofollow - more evidence has emerged about Mr Trump's business ties to Russia, and how associates hoped a deal to build Trump Tower Moscow would help win the election for the real estate tycoon, with the assistance of the Kremlin.
But while the Mueller investigation proceeds, and might or might not lead to any criminal indictments or the removal from office of Donald Trump, a counter-narrative has emerged.
What if, as President Trump maintains, the Russia thing is a "made up story"?
What if somebody else hacked the Democratic National Committee, not Russia, and not to benefit Mr Trump?
False flags and inside jobs
Trump supporter and former US Ambassador to the UN https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/12/false-flag/510410/" rel="nofollow - John Bolton has described US intelligence agency claims of Russian involvement in the DNC hack as a "false flag" because, he believes, "a really sophisticated foreign intelligence service would not leave any finger prints".
Bolton's use of that phrase "false flag" is intriguing. That's exactly how conspiracy theorists including Trump's favourite shock jock Alex Jones of Infowars.com describe events like the Oklahoma Bombing in 1995, the September 11 attacks in 2001 and the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school massacre.
Jones has appalled and enraged the families of the victims of those tragic attacks by claiming they were "inside jobs" staged by the government.
But Donald Trump once gushed Jones' reputation is "amazing", and promised him "I will not let you down". (Not surprising perhaps, given Trump's White House campaign effectively began by pushing the groundless "birther" conspiracy that president Barack Obama was born in Kenya and therefore not legitimately elected).
But now, as Mr Trump faces questions about his own legitimacy, his defenders like Jones and Sean Hannity on Fox News are helping to spread competing explanations — including the case of Seth Rich.
The 27-year-old Rich was walking home from a bar in Washington DC's Columbia Heights district in the early hours of July 10 last year when he was shot twice. He was taken to hospital but died two hours later — one of 139 murders in the US capital last year.
Rich was an employee of the DNC, where he was director of voter expansion data. Police said his killing looked like a robbery gone wrong, although his phone, watch and wallet were still on his body.
The violent death of someone associated with the Democratic Party at the height of election season set the internet alight with theories. Infowars, Breitbart and Fox all aired claims he had been murdered for leaking the DNC's emails to Wikileaks. Founder of the website, Australian-born Julian Assange, fuelled the flames of speculation by saying cryptically "our sources take risks" and offering a $20,000 reward for information about Rich's killing.
But Assange, who has asserted Russia wasn't behind the DNC hack, never directly said Rich was his source, and http://edition.cnn.com/2016/07/26/politics/julian-assange-dnc-email-leak-hack/index.html" rel="nofollow - has also said Wikileaks likes to "create maximum ambiguity as to who our sources are."
Fox News then reported, before hastily retracting, http://www.fox5dc.com/news/local-news/254852337-story" rel="nofollow - unsubstantiated claims by a private investigator that there was evidence Rich had been in contact with Wikileaks before his death.
The fact checkers at Politifact have described it as a http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2017/may/26/patriotcriercom/conspiracy-theory-comey-hid-seth-richs-ties-wikile/" rel="nofollow - "persistent and unfounded conspiracy theory ". They awarded an even more elaborate claim that former FBI director James Comey knew Rich was the Wikileaks source and covered up for Hillary its worst possible "Pants on Fire!" rating.
The IT worker for Congress
But it doesn't end there. Many of the same right-wing media outlets have also been focused on another intriguing case, involving a 37-year-old Pakistani-American IT worker named Imran Awan.
Awan, his wife and some family members set up shop in 2004 providing a range of tech services to Democratic Party congressional offices in Washington DC, installing PCs, fixing printers, and resetting passwords.
Earlier this year a criminal complaint alleged Awan conspired to defraud the congressional credit union of $165,000 which was part of $283,000 he wired back to Pakistan.
Capitol Hill police also looked into accusations that IT equipment and money had gone missing from a number of offices, and referred their suspicions of a "procurement scam" to the FBI. That saw Awan lose access to the congressional computer network, so most of his clients dropped him.
Media player: "Space" to play, "M" to mute, "left" and "right" to seek.
But for months Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz resisted sacking Awan.
She said there was no evidence of illegality, he was entitled to due process and she was concerned Awan was the target of an anti-Muslim witch hunt.
Awan was arrested trying to leave the US in July and has since been charged with a number of offences relating to that loan and money transfer to Pakistan, but nothing else. He has now been sacked by Mrs Wasserman Schulz.
The idea of a Muslim under investigation on Capitol Hill with access to the computers belonging to senior Democrats is fertile ground for further speculation. Particularly because Mrs Wasserman Schultz is the former chair of the Democratic National Committee — the target of the hacks published by Wikileaks.
Perhaps it's Awan, not Russia, that stole the DNC emails, or maybe they were https://bigleaguepolitics.com/sources-awan-case-relates-directly-seth-rich-case/" rel="nofollow - working together !
Trump's retweet
In late July Mr Trump https://mobile.twitter.com/townhallcom/status/890542946570952705?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slate.com%2Fblogs%2Fthe_slatest%2F2017%2F08%2F04%2Fthe_investigation_of_imran_awan_and_house_it_staffers_for_debbie_wasserman.html" rel="nofollow - retweeted a story castigating the mainstream media for ignoring the Awan story.
And then https://mobile.twitter.com/Sheraleeable/status/892423219961114624/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fheavy.com%2Fnews%2F2017%2F08%2Fseth-rich-imran-awan-partying-theories-truth-hoax-debunked-photos-rumors-dnc-leaks%2F" rel="nofollow - a photo of Rich emerged showing him with a group of friends hours before his death with a man resembling Imran Awan in the background. The https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tmn0yyPkKk0" rel="nofollow - internet went https://newspunch.com/imran-awan-seth-rich/" rel="nofollow - berserk — AWAN KILLED SETH RICH!!!
Former Trump campaign advisor Roger Stone https://mobile.twitter.com/RogerJStoneJr/status/892265715780026368?p=v" rel="nofollow - tweeted : "FACT - Wasserman-Schulz "IT consultant" Awan was partying with Seth Rich the night of his murder!"
Except that it wasn't Imran Awan, it was a friend of Rich's named Miguel Huerta. There is no evidence linking Awan to Rich.
Quest for an alternative narrative
Right now we don't know why Seth Rich was killed, and we may never know. But all of the speculation and theorising is designed to do one thing: find an alternative narrative to the Trump "Russia thing".
By the same token, despite there being a lot more evidence, we don't yet know what the Mueller investigation will uncover about Russian election tampering and possible Trump collusion.
At times both sides are guilty of doing what the worst conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones do around events like Oklahoma, September 11 and Sandy Hook.
They find a single, sinister explanation that confirms a pre-existing view.
The drive to impeach Mr Trump for being illegitimately elected before the evidence has been presented has clear echoes of Trump's own disgraceful "birtherism" conspiracy against Mr Obama.
Sometimes there are singular reasons for why something happens, and sometimes there are many.
But particularly at a time when distrust of http://www.gallup.com/poll/195542/americans-trust-mass-media-sinks-new-low.aspx" rel="nofollow - the media and https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/americans-dont-trust-their-institutions-anymore/" rel="nofollow - public institutions is so high, we tend to want to believe in a secret over-arching explanation, and believe that there's more to the story than we are being told.

Ha!! I've given this careful thought....after the collapse of the USSR, a great deal of state wealth ended up in the hands of a chosen few, "oligarchs," who then took control of state industries including oil, steel, aluminum etc.
These oligarchs had SO much money, and were so poor at managing money, that they reached out to the money-boys of the West with sacks of cash to invest, and investment opportunities in post-Soviet oil & gas.
I think there was so much of this Russian funny-money sloshing around that nearly everyone in finance, real estate, banking etc. ended up being contaminated to some extent.
However, Ross and the others were certainly aware of their issues with Russian cash, and conveniently forgot to bring this up in hearings.
See the graphic display in the article which shows the many inter-connections!

Wilbur Ross was named in the "Paradise Papers"
BBC wrote:

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has an interest in
Navigator Holdings, which earns millions a year transporting oil and gas
for Russian energy firm Sibur.
Two major Sibur shareholders are under some form of US sanctions.
A commerce department spokesman did not dispute the revelations.
"Secretary
Ross recuses himself from any matters focused on transoceanic shipping
vessels," the spokesman told BBC Panorama, adding that the secretary
"works closely with Commerce Department ethics officials to ensure the
highest ethical standards".
What ethical standards?? And more a case of profiting from making Russian Great.

There is still no evidence that links Trump to anything criminal the Russians might have been doing. The link is just not there and it is not for lack of trying. Even today as they desperate try to prove the document later paid for by the Democrats - all his body guard at the Beauty Pageant in Moscow can say was he denied the offer or prostitutes.
I can tell you I have been to Washington D.C. and stayed in hotel one mile away from the capital and there were prostitutes everywhere. Four rode in the elevator as I returned from the vending machines to my wife and tried to hit on me. One was male.
It is no great secret that many people in the highest political position use prostitutes daily in D.C. Also even JFK had women brought to him by his "protectors" who .. well we won't go there.
The whole investigation should be on Hillary was has solid hard core evidence of being paid by Russia to broker the Uranium deal. People have gone to prison and that is where she should go as well.
The news loves this drama, which is a drama and unsupported by any hard evidence. If they continue long enough they might get enough people to lie - but it is unlikely.
Time to look at the Democrats which have much more solid base of corruption and collusion with Russia.

This threads continues to make no sense. There is no proof and hasn't been for a year as the Democrats lost the election that Trump colluded with Russia. There is a mountain of evidence the Hillary (and I have posted a thread on this) took money from the Russians directly to the Clinton Foundation in a pay for play scheme to give them 20% of our uranium. This was a major breach of national security and provided them with material make nuclear bombs to use on the U.S.
They can dig up any number of people who Trump knew or worked for him and they still will never prove he worked with Russia to win the election. He did not. Russia is not our friend and obviously spies on us, hacks into our net and servers and government agencies, and has moles at our highest levels of government. One of their last plants was mole who was in charge of the investigation.
Even the Democrats want to move away from the whole Clinton mess which could really hurt them in the coming Congressional elections and cost them valuable seats in the House and Senate.
They need a hero or even heroine to champion for them who is not a Social Justice Warrior wanna be who really isn't (Hillary).
They need to move away from Trump bashing as it did not help them win the election and was really poor method to win the rust belt and coal miners which hurt them.
Nothing is more tedious than listening to people not from America bash America. We were the most powerful nation on earth and we need someone to make America great again. It wasn't Hillary for sure. Trump is trying amidst all the false news and hostile media.
The drama continues along side which older woman teachers molesting male students, as all the cougars get a contact high from the thought. It is sick. And these are the kind of people who supported Hillary. Not the majority. Minorities that were courted and terrorized that if they did not put Hillary in they would be deported and they better vote for her.
It is not against the law to meet with a Russian. There is no gotcha in this and the most guilty are the DNC which was fixed primary which was as far from democracy as you can get.
The beat goes on and Trump did not work with Russian and is our president.
Get over it and move on.

Uranium does not make bombs, Med, unless it is enriched or used to make plutonium, the expensive, high technical and dangerous part of the process. There are vast reserves of the stuff all over the globe. Making money from selling it is no more dangerous than selling titanium, lead or gold. Growing rich is not a crime either. Avoiding paying taxes on your profits can be, but Hilary's taxes are public knowledge.
Dealing with the Russians is also not automatically a crime. It only becomes one if the dealings are inherently dishonest, like money laundering - which is a federal crime, or interfering with the results of an election - which could be treasonous.
Hilary's campaign was a joke! When it came to bashing the other side, she lost that as well as the election. She was nowhere near as adept at it than Trump. Although it was probably his greater media savvy that turned the tide, that was how Nixon won back in the day - he grasped the value of TV the way Trump "got" twitter.
I agree that Hilary is probably not the best "social justice warrior" choice. But, she lost so why harp on? She is the disaster America avoided. Trump is the one you got.

the uranium deal doesnt damage our national security that sale was reviewed and APPROVED by multiple federal agencies it was no big secret it was investigated two years ago and no wrong doing was found but hey investigate it again if it makes ya happy
Benghazi was subject to SEVEN investigations at a cost to taxpayers of MILLIONS thousand of hours of testimony produced NOTHING actionable and poor Med is complaining about one little ol Mueller look see ??? Trump will in all likelihood escape justice but those around him ??? he will throw them under the bus if it protects himself
Mueller is just helping Trump "drain the swamp" look at all the liars he has exposed pretty much EVERYONE he has questioned in the Trump administration
I think its only fair that the Repubs got 7 Benghazi's the Democrats should get 7 investigations too
and let me point out yet once again that Hillary WON THE POPULAR VOTER by MILLIONS !!!!!!!!! the people of America CHOSE HILLARY it was the antiquated Electoral College that installed the FAILED Trumpen Furor as Pres and don't YOU forget it
and the "beauty" of a failed Trump Presidency is that the people who supported him are going to be the ones to suffer the most we already see that happening don't we ??? too bad sooooooooo sad but bad choices invariably lead to BAD consequences

That's something everyone seems to forget - during his campaign he promised all kinds of things including something that sounded very much like universal healthcare (and let's not forget tax breaks for everyone but the wealthy). Now that push comes to shove, he's sitting in the White House demanding that the GOP bring him something to sign because he clearly has nothing to contribute, and apparently never did.

Russia’s tyrant works to help the Republican nominee win America’s presidential election.
Members of the nominee’s campaign know of the effort and try to coordinate with it.

If Flynn Is Small Fry, Who’s the Bigger Fish in Mueller’s Net?
The former national-security adviser pleads guilty to making false statements, and is now cooperating with the special counsel’s investigation.
Whatever is on President Trump’s Christmas list, it didn’t include Friday’s news: Special Counsel Robert Mueller has charged former National-Security Adviser Michael Flynn with making false statements to the FBI about his conversations with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Worse, Flynn pleaded guilty Friday morning at federal court in Washington.
It’s an ironic turn for a man who first reached widespread national attention https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFBAjhxjQ90" rel="nofollow - leading chants of “Lock her up!” about Hillary Clinton at the 2016 Republican National Convention.
And it is monumental news in the special counsel’s investigation, dwarfing even the indictment of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. First, and most bluntly, it’s notable because the former national-security adviser, the closest adviser to the president on the most sensitive issues of defense and national safety, is pleading guilty to a felony committed while he served as national-security adviser.
Second, the move puts Mueller’s investigation inside the White House. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/11/why-a-flynn-indictment-would-be-so-scary-for-the-white-house/545039/" rel="nofollow - As I wrote last month , a Flynn indictment filled the Trump team with particular dread, and for good reason. Before the Flynn charge, Mueller had charged two former campaign staffers with crimes committed outside of the campaign, and a low-level campaign staffer had pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents about his contacts with Russians during the campaign.Flynn, in contrast, was a top adviser to the president in the White House before he was fired in mid-February, for lying to Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with Kislyak. That made his tenure as national-security adviser historically brief. So far, the special counsel has released little information about the charges, but the http://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4318007-Flynn-Information.html" rel="nofollow - two-page document indicates that Flynn’s conversations with Kislyak concerned presidential policy. According to the special counsel, Flynn spoke to Kislyak asking him to refrain from responding to new sanctions imposed in the waning days of the Obama administration, and that Flynn asked Kislyak to delay or defeat a UN Security Council vote; he then lied about those conversations with the FBI.The fact that Flynn was operating on behalf of the incoming government represents the first concrete case of Trump’s presidential staff, rather than his campaign team, covering up contacts with Russia. Prosecutors said in https://www.justice.gov/file/1015126/download" rel="nofollow - court filings on Friday that Flynn called a “senior official of the Presidential Transition Team” on December 29, after being contacted by Kislyak, and was told that the transition did not want Russia to escalate the situation. Flynn then called Kislyak to request that Russia respond only in a reciprocal manner, which it subsequently did.The filings also said that, on December 22, “a very senior member of the Presidential Transition Team” directed Flynn to contact officials from foreign governments about a pending UN Security Council resolution on the issue of Israel settlements, to find out where they stood and to persuade them to delay or defeat the resolution. Flynn made that request of Kislyak that same day, but Kislyak told him the following day that Russia would not oppose the resolution if it came to a vote. (It passed with 14 votes in favors, and only the U.S. abstaining.)
Third, the plea appears to corroborate reports that Flynn was working toward a deal in which he would plead guilty in exchange for cooperating with the government. That’s also bad news for the Trump administration, because it indicates that Flynn knows something of value to the special counsel’s investigation. Mueller’s choice of lieutenants has suggested he is seeking to flip key witnesses in order to learn essential information, but so far that had only yielded George Papadopoulos, a previously little-known campaign aide. Flynn is a far larger catch. In fact, one might expect the national-security adviser to be near the top of the food chain, since he reports directly to the president. If Flynn is small fry, how many bigger fish are there, and who?
Fourth, it’s notable that the charge against Flynn is lying to the FBI. That’s because it has been more or less known since February that he did so. On February 16, three days after Flynn’s forced resignation, The Washington Post https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/flynn-in-fbi-interview-denied-discussing-sanctions-with-russian-ambassador/2017/02/16/e3e1e16a-f3d5-11e6-8d72-263470bf0401_story.html?utm_term=.d7cdd87cbeb5" rel="nofollow - reported both that Flynn had denied speaking with Kislyak about the sanctions in a conversation with FBI agents, and that intelligence intercepts indicated he was lying. The FBI interview took place on January 24; on January 26, then-Acting Attorney General Sally Yates spoke to White House Counsel Don McGahn, and in testimony in May she implied that she had informed McGahn that Flynn lied to FBI agents. The investigation into Flynn’s alleged lying to FBI agents long-predates Mueller’s appointment as special counsel in May.

Flynn could also be in trouble for things he did before he was appointed national-security adviser. After leaving the military, Flynn was paid for trips overseas, including one to Russia for a fete celebrating RT, the Kremlin-backed news and propaganda outlet; at dinner, Flynn was seated with President Vladimir Putin. As former top brass, Flynn should have sought Pentagon permission before taking those trips; he also should have disclosed them when applying to renew his security clearance in 2016. Members of Congress https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/09/the-surprising-scope-of-michael-flynns-dubious-business-deals/539733/" rel="nofollow - allege that Flynn did neither.
These are only the incidents which have been publicly reported. Mueller may or may not know of other possible misdeeds.
The obvious question any time someone is caught lying to the FBI is, How could they have been so stupid? This is especially true in the case of Flynn, the former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency. As a decorated and accomplished intelligence officer, he should have known that conversations with the Russian ambassador might be surveilled, producing irrefutable evidence that he was lying. His decision to lie about such a black-and-white matter raises questions about whether he might have hoped to cover something up.
The plea once again raises questions about the president’s judgment, both in hiring Flynn and afterwards. Flynn’s firing from the DIA by President Obama for mismanagement ought to have been a red flag. The campaign did not effectively vet Flynn, failing to turn up the missing security-clearance disclosures. The New York Times https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/17/us/politics/michael-flynn-donald-trump-national-security-adviser.html?&hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=a-lede-package-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news&_r=0" rel="nofollow - reports that Flynn told the Trump transition team in January that he was under investigation for undisclosed lobbying on behalf of Turkey. Top White House officials deny they were informed.
Nor did Trump act swiftly to deal with Flynn’s duplicity. Even after McGahn was apparently informed that Flynn had lied to the FBI, Trump did not force Flynn out until February 13—and then only after The Washington Post reported that Flynn had lied about his conversations with Kislyak. At the time, the White House said Flynn was forced out for lying to Mike Pence, and it also defended his character, even as it knew he’d lied to the FBI.
Once Flynn had been fired, the president pressured then-FBI Director James Comey to drop the investigation into Flynn, one of several incidents in which the president attempted to interfere in FBI probes. On May 9, Trump fired Comey, a decision he attributed to the Russia probe. Here, too, Trump’s aggressive steps to defend Flynn seem to defy simple explanation. Flynn’s plea could tie into a reported investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice by firing Comey.
Given the brevity of the public documents, there’s little else to be gleaned at this point. Mueller’s investigation has been highly disciplined about leaks, with little information reaching the public. There’s no way to predict how soon information obtained from Flynn might reach the public or help to produce fresh charges. But the simple fact of Mueller nabbing Flynn now is enough to http://www.twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/936393574433939456" rel="nofollow - take a little merriment out of the president’s Christmas.

and including the firing of James Comey, Trump did everything he could
to try to shut down, slow down or stop the investigation. First, he
tried to shut down the investigation of Mike Flynn. Then it turned out
that Mike Flynn is probably just a piece of a much larger problem, which
is Russia. Trump admitted to the Russian ambassador and to the Russian
foreign minister shortly after he fired Comey that now he’s got some
relief from the Russia problem — in other words, Comey’s gone! But
what’s happened since then is the continuing effort to interfere with
the investigation, even in the form of tweets — all of which sure look a
lot to me like witness intimidation for some of the key players in the
saga.
And then there’s a third component, which is
in a way the most insidious — the willingness of the congressional GOP
to be complicit in all of this. We’re talking now about a prescription
for disaster for democracy. It’s all part of the same story. If you
think about it, every single person who has said something about there
being no connection between Trump and Russia during the campaign has
been caught in a lie about it. Even with this fellow George
Papadopoulos, the talking point immediately became, “Well, he didn’t get
in trouble for anything that he did, he got in trouble for lying to
federal investigators.” Sure, and what was he lying to federal
investigators about? About whether or not there were any contacts
between the Trump campaign and Russia. And that’s the part that
everybody glosses over in terms of the talking points on the Republican
side.
let me repeat that one part
" If you think about it, every single person who has said something about
there being no connection between Trump and Russia during the campaign
has been caught in a lie about it."
EVERY SINGLE PERSON
as I have asked before
if your not doing anything wrong
they why the &*^%$* are you constantly LYING ???
and then there is this
Moyers: Harding, who’s a very experienced reporter, quotes the
British ex-spy, Christopher Steele, who worked in Russia for years and
compiled that notorious dossier on Trump that mysteriously appeared last
year. He quotes Steele saying that “Russian intelligence has been
secretly cultivating Trump for years.” As you and I discussed in August,
Trump appears to have attracted the attention of Soviet intelligence as
far back as 1987, on his first visit to Moscow — a visit arranged by
the top level of the Soviet diplomatic service, with the assistance of
the KGB.
what was that one part again?
He quotes Steele saying that “Russian intelligence has been secretly cultivating Trump for years.”

Keeping up with my Paul Manafort bashing.....he's a traitor against the USA. And, apparently, he's a blooming idiot!
Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manfort allegedly violated orders from the judge who is presiding over his case by attempting to sneak a ghostwritten op-ed in praise of Paul Manafort into the press, according to court filings that special counsel Robert Mueller’s team issued on Monday. Mueller’s office changed its position on the loosening of bail terms for Manafort based on the alleged attempted shenanigans.
On Wednesday, Talking Points Memo http://talkingpointsmemo.com/muckraker/manafort-op-ed-kilimnik" rel="nofollow - published the op-ed in question, which it received from professed author Oleg Voloshyn. It is a hoot!
TPM reported that the op-ed could be described as a “love letter to Manafort.” That description, however, does a disservice to love letters, which generally are a little more subtle.

The underlying reason for executive privilege -- that a chief executive is entitled to candid advice from close aides without fear that such discussions would be revealed in a courtroom -- has been upheld in the courts.
But while validating the theory of executive privilege, those courts have sometimes refused to let a president exercise it. The most important test of the doctrine was the Supreme Court's decision in 1974 that both formally established executive privilege and ruled that Nixon could not hide criminal behavior behind it. The contents of Nixon's White House tapes ultimately ended his presidency.

Thirteen Russians criminally charged for interfering in US election, Mueller announces
Indictment does not say whether anyone else in Trump’s team had knowingly colluded with Russian operatives
Charges state that as far back as 2014, the defendants conspired together to defraud the US through interference

Thirteen Russians have been criminally charged for interfering in the 2016 US election to help Donald Trump, the office of https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/robert-mueller" rel="nofollow - Robert Mueller , the special counsel, announced on Friday.
Mueller’s office said 13 Russians and three Russian entities, including the notorious https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/17/russian-troll-factory-activists-protests-us-election" rel="nofollow - state-backed “troll farm” the Internet Research Agency, had been https://www.justice.gov/file/1035477/download" rel="nofollow - indicted by a federal grand jury in Washington DC .
A 37-page indictment alleged that the Russians’ operations “included supporting the presidential campaign of then-candidate Donald J Trump ... and disparaging Hillary Clinton,” his Democratic opponent.
Mueller alleged that Russian operatives “communicated with unwitting individuals associated with the Trump campaign”, but the indictment did not address the question of whether anyone else in Trump’s team had knowingly colluded.
Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, said at a press conference in Washington: “There is no allegation in this indictment that any American had any knowledge.” Rosenstein added that the charges did not mean the Russian activity had an effect on the outcome of the election.
The Russians allegedly posed as Americans to operate bogus social media accounts, buy advertisements and stage political rallies. They stole the identities of real people in the US to post online and built computer systems in the US to hide the Russian origin of their activity, according prosecutors.
“This indictment serves as a reminder that people are not always who they appear to be on the internet,” said Rosenstein. He alleged that the Russians had “worked to promote discord in the United States and undermine public confidence in democracy,” adding: “We must not allow them to succeed.”
The charges state that from as far back as 2014, the defendants conspired together to defraud the US by “impairing, obstructing, and defeating the lawful functions of government” through interference with the American political and electoral processes.
One defendant, Yevgeniy Prigozhin, is accused of using companies he controlled – including Concord Management and Consulting, and Concord Catering – to finance the operations against the US. The operation at one stage had a monthly budget of $1.25m,according to Mueller, which paid for operatives’ salaries and bonuses.
Events were organised by Russians posing as Trump supporters and https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/sep/30/blacktivist-facebook-account-russia-us-election" rel="nofollow - as groups opposed to Trump such as Black Lives Matter , according to prosecutors. One advertisement shortly before the election promoted the Green party candidate Jill Stein, who is blamed by some Clinton backers for splitting the anti-Trump vote.
In August 2016, Russian operatives communicated with Trump campaign staff in Florida through their “@donaldtrump.com” email addresses to coordinate a series of pro-Trump rallies in the state, according to Mueller, and then bought advertisements on social media to promote the events.

At one rally in West Palm Beach, a Russian operative is even alleged to have paid Americans to build a cage on a flatbed truck and to have an actor posing as Clinton in a prison uniform stand inside.
One defendant, Irina Kaverzina, is accused of admitting her involvement in the operation and a subsequent coverup in an email to a relative in September last year, after Mueller’s inquiry had begun. “We had a slight crisis here at work: the FBI busted our activity,” Kaverzina allegedly wrote, “so I got preoccupied with covering tracks together with the colleagues.”
The Russians are also accused of working to suppress turnout among ethnic minority voters. They allegedly created an Instagram account posing as “Woke Blacks” and railed against the notion that African Americans should choose Clinton as “the lesser of two devils” against Trump.
In early November 2016, according to the indictment, the Russian operatives used bogus “United Muslims of America” social media accounts to claim that “American Muslims [are] boycotting elections today.”
Following Trump’s victory, the Russian operation promoted allegations of voter fraud by the Democratic party, according to Mueller’s team. Around that time, Trump repeatedly claimed without evidence that he would have won the popular vote if not for large-scale voter fraud.
The individuals charged are Mikhail Ivanovich Bystrov, Mikhail Leonidovich Burchik, Aleksandra Yuryevna Krylova, Anna Vladislavovna Bogacheva, Sergey Pavlovich Polozov, Maria Anatolyevna Bovda, Robert Sergeyevich Bovda, Dzheykhun Nasimi Ogly, Vadim Vladimirovich Podkopaev, Gleb Igorevitch Vasilchenko, Irina Viktorovna Kaverzina, Yevgeny Viktorovich Prigozhinand Vladimir Venkov.
All were charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States. Three defendants were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, and five defendants were charged with aggravated identity theft.
Separately, Mueller’s office announced that Richard Pinedo, of Santa Paula, California, had https://www.justice.gov/sco" rel="nofollow - pleaded guilty to identity fraud . Pinedo, 28, admitted to running a website that offered stolen identities to help customers get around the security measures of major online payment sites. It was not made clear whether his service had been used by the Russian operatives.
Rosenstein said no contact had been made with Russian authorities regarding the charges so far, but that US officials intended to seek extradition of the defendants.
US intelligence agencies previouslyconcluded that Russians mounted an attack on the US election system aimed at electing https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/donaldtrump" rel="nofollow - Donald Trump to the presidency.
Mueller is conducting a criminal inquiry into interference by Russians and possible collusion by Trump’s campaign. Two Trump campaign advisers have pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI. Two others have been charged with federal crimes.
US investigators have long signalled their belief that Prigozhin, a 56-year-old billionaire businessman, is behind Russia’s internet troll factories.
Nicknamed the “Kremlin’s chef”, Prigozhin once ran Putin’s favourite restaurant in St Petersburg, after which he was awarded multi-billion pound state catering contracts.
He provided catering for Dmitry Medvedev’s presidential inauguration in 2008, and also has lucrative contracts to feed Russia’s army and Moscow’s schoolchildren.
Prigozhin, who has also been linked to the Wagner Group, a shadowy Kremlin-linked private military contractor believed to be operating in Syria, https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jun/20/us-russia-sanctions-ukraine-president-visit" rel="nofollow - was included on a US sanctions list in July .
Speaking to the RIA Novosti state news agency on Friday, Prigozhin said: “The Americans are really impressionable people, they see what they want to see. I have great respect for them. If they want to see the devil – let them see him.”
Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the allegations “absurd”.
“13 people carried out interference in the US elections? 13 people against special services with a budgets of billions?” she wrote in a Facebook post.
Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian media he had not yet had a chance to study the indictments.

It looks to me as if the question of Russian electoral influence is clearly answered. - YES! There sure was!
However, much as I dislike and mistrust Trump, there is no proof (yet) of his collusion,- at least no definitive proof. Although I personally doubt his innocence, it is only fair to give him the benefit of said doubt; at least unless/until real concrete proof emerges. So this is what we know... Russian companies spent around a million dollars a month to buy political influence. Even so there is no distinct pro trump quality to it.... they just wanted to create chaos. Hillary spent a billion dollars so this Russian program was just chump change. The DNC leaks where probably an inside job. There was no collusion according to Muller his report states that no Americans knowingly helped the Russians. Nobody alleges that the vote count was altered or manipulated in any way.
The whole purpose of this conspiracy was not to get Trump elected, it is a simple continuation of a long term soviet goal of getting Americans not to trust their political system. With all the hysteria from the media and dems I think this plan has been far more successful than they could have hoped for.
As a matter of fact I expect this whole thing to go away soon... way to many democrats have dirty hands in this... nobody wants a full investigation.

"All in all, the odds are disconcertingly high that Russia, or somebody,
has blackmail leverage over the president of the United States."
Trump and all those around him have done nothing but LIE and obfuscate on this issue since day one IF your not guilty of something THEN why all the LIES ???
Trump REPEATEDLY said he had nothing to do with the Russians even his own sons have contradicted him on this
we DO KNOW that the Russians did indeed meddle in the election this is an established FACT at this point Trump has said from day one that NO this is not the case and now he denies saying this ???
Trump refused to invoke further sanctions against Russia WHY ???
it certainly appears someone has something on him
Mr. Trump IF your not guilty then STOP LYING
and thank you JD "That sounds a lot more like what Fox News knows. There's much more to this story than a few bullet points."
talking points is exactly right and incorrect ones at that

Trump: I Never Said Russia Did Not Meddle in Our Election. Reality: Your Pants Are on Fire
The internet, while often used as a tool to make people think they’re
experts in fields they are not, does provide a functional way for
people to check on whether somebody else is lying or not.
And President Trump is lying."
gee
ya think

I honestly want to know, for those saying that Trump colluded what did trump get from it? Like I said that million dollars a month they spent was like pissing in the ocean, the DNC leaks by all accounts really does seem be an inside job, maybe the Russians were responsible for the Podesta emails I don't know. Even so the emails didn't tell us anything we didn't already know.... I don't think they swayed many people.
How did Trump benefit from any of this?
Edit: I will concede that perhaps Trump could have been duped but I don't see any motivation for him to be willingly involved.

Let me put it much simpler.... Trumps own resources VASTLY exceeds those given to these meddling efforts. If he thought any thing they where doing was useful.... he could have easily paid for it himself and had no toxic associations. He didn't need the Russians.

Trump likes to win. He probably wanted to win the presidential race even more than he wanted to be President.
His money, influence and, most importantly, his media-savvy made him almost incapable of losing. But almost is not certainty and he would have wanted certainty.
That does not mean he colluded, but it does give him motive.

whats the lesson here .......
the internet is not safe,
elections should be a cross in a box on a balot paper, forget machines,
and FOES will try and destroy democracy,
by ANY MEANS............
maybe we woke up to the danger now ,
Trump is just the stooge in all of this its way over his head..............
and it has been going on long before Chump and his sideshow appeared............

Technophobe so are you arguing that 1 million dollars a month offered Trump "certainty"? LOL like I said the Russian effort was like pissing in the ocean.

No, DeepThinker, not certainty, but a small step closer to it.

Everybody was attacked in a Trump tweet storm this weekend...except Russia. Won't impose sections despite both houses overwhelmingly calling for them, and won't do anything but praise Putin. Nothing to see, right?
What did Trump gain? The power he's craved for years, and the ability to restructure the tax code to benefit himself and his family for starters.

Here are http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43164321" rel="nofollow - some details from the BBC
Robert Mueller indicted Mr Trump's former campaign chairman Paul
Manafort and business associate Rick Gates on multiple counts of tax and
bank fraud.
Both were charged in October with conspiracy to launder money.
But there are no criminal allegations of collusion with Russia, the justice department investigation's main thrust.
.....
Thursday's 32-count indictment alleges that Mr Manafort and Mr Gates
conspired to hide more than $30m (£22m) in Mr Manafort's personal income
from tax officials.
It also claims that Mr Gates concealed more than $3m of his own income.
The
money "flowed through" a $75m offshore account controlled by them,
according to the indictment filed by a federal grand jury in Alexandria,
Virginia.
The video in the article also talks of spending more the $1 million on menswear
