May 20, 2009 Public can participate in preparedness exercise The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness plans an emergency preparedness exercise today to test its ability to deliver medicines during a public health emergency using drive-through windows at banks. Health officials are asking the public to participate from 5 to 7 p.m. at National City Bank branches at 6511 Preston Highway and at 2601 Bank St. The exercise, which tests the delivery of medications from the Strategic National Stockpile, is part of the Cities Readiness Initiative of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and will simulate a response to a bioterrorism attack. While it was planned before the current swine flu outbreak, health officials said the lessons learned can be used if a pandemic occurs in the future. Participants will be entered into a drawing for a flat-screen color TV (one will be given away at each site). There also will be drawings for weather radios and family preparedness backpacks. |
