Also you can use the cedar shavings bags..available from any pet store. place 1 to 2 inches in the bottom of bucket , they come in bales at any pet store. cover with scoops of shavings after bowel movement, but minimal use after urine. Musky odor and will bio-degrade even with toilet paper. Use rake to insure air to help with bio-dergade. Makes " night soil which is great fertilzer on gardens after 2 yrs. 1 yr great on trees and bushes. Meewee |

I've purchased a portable toilet from Dick's Sporting Goods. It hold 5 gallons of potty. I'm going to buy some non-toxic chemicals to help deoderize it. Looks just like a regular toilet but smaller. Holding tank is detachable. I will just dig a small hole outside and empty it when needed. Will throw toilet paper in a trash can instead of the toilet. You can find them on camping supplies websites or sporting goods stores. They are very reasonably priced. You can purchase the chemicals online at camping supplies websites, or Meijers. Seems to be much easier and comfortable to use than a bucket.

Don't forget that you need to dig your hole a sensible distance from your house to minimize odor, rodents and insects. Even if you use a portable potty you will still need to dispose of your poop so sounds like we all need to start shoveling. |

I purchased ours online from Dick's Sporting Goods, or you can search camping supplies websites. Yeah, we'll dig our holes away from the house! Since the toilet I purchased holds 5 gallons, I'm going to just dig a small hole, empty it, then put the dirt back on top. |

Here in the Pacific northwest it rains alot. I have rain barrels under the downspouts. Scoop water out of barrel with bucket. Dump in toilet tank. Flush toilet. Septic system doesn't take any electricity. So I don't see a problem. Do this during power outages all the time. Works great. Even plasic garbage cans as rain barrels work good. Hope someone can use this invormation.

Hi guys here is a question that i asked myelf. What if I am to sick or my love ones are to sick to make it to the bathroom in time then what. So I have decided to order a couple of female urinals a couple of male urinals and a few bed pans. They sure would come in handy if some one couldn't make it in time. Plus you could keep and extra one by the bed so if someone had to throw up. I don't remember the site. Just type in urinals.

Digging a hole with post hole diggers about 4' deep, insert about 12" of pea gravel, cover hole with..well almost anything. Deposit waste into hole, cover waste with powered lime which helps with smell and break down. Five gallon buckets with trash can liners,Wal-Mart sack, etc will work in a pinch. You can even rig up a toliet seat if need be. |

I'm looking for an online site that sells inexpensive bedpans. I do have a
male urinal. Are there such things as female urinals? Thanks. Rocky PS. Our site sells wag bags and also portible potties (quick delivery). We are maintaining our own personal supply of wag bags, pooh powder (latter extends the use of each wag bag) and a portable pottyl. Take a look http://www.homeemergencyusa.com |

Lime is limestone rock, ground into a fine powder, and dried. You sprinkle it over the poop, keeps the smell down and promotes decomposition of the wastes.

I bought a port a potty for about $22.00 at WalMart. Also, purchased the chemicals to put in it. My only thoughts now are where to dump it. We can dig a whole in the ground, but I'd rather the trash guys picked it up in coffee cans until we have no trash pickup. I guess I could flush it if I had enough waste water to pour in the toilet. Be sure to stock way, way up on TP & Kleenex. We're trying to calculate our usage now & are stocking up to have about 6 months worth. It may be a good barter item as well.

Hey guys it would be a good idea to keep some lime around just in case you have to dump waste in the ground. Make sure to have a couple of good shovels.

Question for you plumbers out there.
I know you can "flush" a toilet when there is no water pressure by dumping a pail of water into the bowl. If you are on either a septic system or a sewer system, is there a point where this does not work. IE it comes bubbling back at you? Indelicate question, but must know. Rocky |

Rocky~as a person who has, until recently, lived without running water for almost two years. I think I am authorized to answer this question of yours. The only way it would come bubbling back at you is if there was a blockage in the pipe going into the septic or sewer system. We bucket flushed our toilet for a while but found it was more effective if you filled the tank up and flushed it using the handle like normal. Hope this helps. |

How do we sanitize .. step by step please. I am a city girl - so please help me with this. 1.If I drop my googles, nano-mask, and rubber shoes in the bucket of bleach/water when I enter the home after being out (even to walk the dogs?) wash the dogs down and enter the house, how and when do I remove the things from the bleach water? 2. If a new person enters (early on - my son will be driving down from the north east to the south) he goes into an isolated room for 2 weeks. The clothes he was wearing are washed in hot water and bleach. What about his suit case and the clothes in it? 3. On his drive down does he wear a mask and gloves? What does he spray the car down with before entering? What does he do when he stops for gas, assuming he puts on ? When does he change his mask and gloves and how does he dispose of them? I know these are detailed questions but I would like to be fully prepared and - as you know- no one in my world will even discuss these things. Thanks for being here! |

I have a septic tank and had hope to use rain water for flushing the toylet, but in lite of the fact that H5N1 can servive in water I need to rethink this use of rain water from my rain gutters. Maybe I'll just toss it in the yard so if some one decides to come on to my property I'll here them yell," what did I step in?". LOL

Well I have one of those portable outhouse covers from
Sportsmansguide. We have the portable toilet seat, all we need it
to dig a suitable hole and we're in business. I will be using
wood for heat and soe coking and the wood ashes are a good substitute
for lye, lye is made from wood ashes.
Of course I plan on using the house toilet and adding water to flush first! But if the system fails, (I'm on city sewer) I have a suitable backup... |

We live on ten acres out in the country. We are going to set up an outhouse far enough away from the house to not cause any problems. This will be a permanent structure, much like the outhouses of the old days. I know this is not possible for some people but for people who are far enough out in the country, this would be a definate possibility.

It's difficult at this moment to say how careful you will need to be. As the situation unfolds there will be more information available about appropriate precautions. You might consideer the following information. It suggests a standard household ionizer might be of benefit indoors if someone were ill. It might cut down any viruses getting thourgh a mask. It was from a CDC website. There is more information on this, just use the search feature (upper right hand corner, look for Ionizer.) http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/resources/pressrel/announceme nts/ 113004wkshp/pdfs/Presentation%2009_Sergey%20Grinshpun.pdf |

Thanks. I could not open the link from the CDC, can you resend it. I have a few cartons of ionizes as my company used to sell them - so I am ok there. I will sell the rest at cost if i have extras. But my question was not so much of how careful do i have to be, but rather HOW do i sanitize the maks/goggles. do i just drop them in the bleah/water mixture and leave them there until it is time to use them again? And then what? Do i just rinse them, dry them, and put them back on? What does someone joining us do with their suitcase wen they enter? Can they just bring it into the "entry" room where they wait for 2 weeks to make sure they are not infected? How long is the bleach/water potent for? So many questons and only here to look for answers. -Sheila |

Expedient toliet/shower shelter
The preference is to use the toliet and shower in your home by simply adding water to the toliet tank as described above. If, however, the sewer and drain lines are backed up or non functional, this is Plan B.
This plan does not require any tools, does not require any mechanical ability, and can be deferred until absolutely necessary, and can be immediately removed when the water returns.
To build a toliet, buy the following items from Home Depot or Lowes:
1. 6-8 standard cement blocks. They have 2 square holes in the middle.
2. A 2 x 4 inch by 6 or 8 foot pice of lumber, cut in half (that is Two 3 or 4 feet sections) they will cut it for free at the store if you do not have a saw.
3. Several 5 gallon buckets with lids.
4. A toliet seat.
5. Place the bucket where you want the toliet to be. Stack 2 cement blocks
behind the bucket and on either side.
6. Your cement blocks should now form a U around the bucket. Be sure the height of the cement blocks exceeds the height of your bucket. If not either add cement blocks or get a shorter bucket, or remove dirt to lower the bucket. The cement blocks MUST be higher that the top of the bucket.
7. Place the 2 x 4s across the cement blocks.
8.Place the toliet seat across the 2x4.
9. You now have an expedient toliet for cheap.
You can place this in the garage or outside. If you use this outside, here is a cheap expedient privacy shelter:
1. Buy 8 standard cement blocks with 2 square holes in the center.
2. Buy Four 2 x 4s.
3. Stack 2 cement blocks with the holes facing the sky.
4. Insert the 2 x 4s into the holes in the cement blocks.
5. Attach waterproof tarp to the erect 2 x 4 with nails or preferably clamps which do not penetrate the tarp.
You can also bury the 2 x 4 into the ground and eliminate the blocks, but this works well if you are having to install this in your driveway or over cement.
This shelter also works well for outside showers.
If you add an additional set of elevated 2 x 4 in the middle for the roof (so rain will drain on either side) you have a temporary shelter superior to mosts tents for cheap.
Also, you can park two SUVs next to each other and connect a tarp with bungy cords to each SUV for a very quick expedient shelter while travelling.

I noticed that one reader wanted information about sanitation of clothing and equipment when coming in from out side.
The answer is if you have not, repeat not, been exposed to BF why worry about decontamination procedures.
On the other hand:
To get ready when you have been exposed here is the military way of decontamination.
1> Have a shower area ready next to a changing area.
2> Have plastic bags available for contaminated clothing and equipment.
3> Quick and dirty now
a. Move to the undressing area.
b. Take off all a equipment place in plastic bags for decon later.
Take off outer clothing shoes, pants, coats. place in plastic bags
Take off inner clothing underwear, socks
Wash hands with gloves on then remove gloves place in bags
Take off eye protection and mask and get into shower
Wash from top to bottom - rinse top to bottom
Once finish put new clothing on
Move plastic bags to a decontamination station
c. Place items for decontamination in an area away from where people are......
d. DO NOT BURN Contaminated items. The smoke will carry it in the wind.
e. If you have to dispose of it BURY IT DEEP.
4. Do not have your decontamination area were you take a regular shower!

06/02/2008 Study Shows Hand Hygiene Slays a SuperbugThe Medical Journal of Australia has published a study showing that a multi-modal, multi-site hand hygiene culture-change program (HHCCP) has reduced the rates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia and disease in hospitals over a 24-month period. The pilot HHCCP was conducted from October 2004 to September 2006 in six healthcare institutions (four urban and two rural with a total number of 2,379 beds). Simultaneously, the researchers assessed the efficacy of an identical program implemented throughout public hospitals over a 12-month period, between March 2006 and July 2006. The main outcome measures were rates of hand hygiene compliance, rates of MRSA disease (patients with bacteremia and the number of clinical isolates per 100 patient discharges). The researchers found that mean hand hygiene compliance improved significantly at all pilot program sites, from 21 percent (95 percent CI, 20 percent–22 percent) at baseline to 48 percent (95 percent CI, 47 percent–49 percent) at 12 months and 47 percent (95 percent CI, 46 percent–48 percent; range, 31 percent–75 percent) at 24 months. Mean baseline rates for the number of patients with MRSA bacteremia and the number of clinical MRSA isolates were 0.05/100 patient discharges per month (range, 0.00–0.13) and 1.39/100 patient discharges per month (range, 0.16–2.39), respectively. These were significantly reduced after 24 months to 0.02/100 patient discharges per month for bacteremia (P = 0.035 for trend; 65 fewer patients with bacteremia) and 0.73/100 patient discharges per month for MRSA isolates (P = 0.003; 716 fewer isolates). Similar findings were noted 12 months after the statewide roll-out, with an increase in mean hand hygiene compliance (from 20 percent to 53 percent; P < 0.001) and reductions in the rates of MRSA isolates (P = 0.043) and bacteremias (P = 0.09). Reference: M Lindsay Grayson, Lisa J Jarvie, Rhea Martin, Paul D R Johnson, Meryanda E Jodoin, Celene McMullan, Roger H C Gregory, Kaye Bellis, Katie Cunnington, Fiona L Wilson, Diana Quin and Anne-Maree Kelly. Significant reductions in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia and clinical isolates associated with a multisite, hand hygiene culture-change program and subsequent successful statewide roll-out.
