DJ-The will to go for strict NPI (Non Pharma Interventions-like masks, lockdowns, social distancing etc.) is decreasing-people would love to believe "vaccines" will end the pandemic (like CO2 "vacuumcleaners will save the climate). Vaccines will make a difference-but there are limits. If-indeed-most of the vaccines would need to be repeated every 3 to 6 months-to be effective we may be buying time...

Denmark claims the "cluster 5 cases" in humans (from Covid19 infected minks-making vaccines less effective) was very limited and stopped. The same mutation showed up in Dutch minks-there it did not spread-as far as is tested and made public-to humans. With increasing cases the risks for mutations and spread to other animals grows. 

To be very realistic and hard; THIS PANDEMIC IS FAR FROM OVER !!!!!!

Governments should increase international cooperation to exchange test results, new findings. Vaccines can help but it will have to be NPI that stop Covid19. 

To get rid of this pandemic is possible but it will take years-not months !!!!! We as humans will have to change the way we live-decrease social contacts by 90+%-for a longer time-to beat Covid19. If we had done more earlier we could be out of the problem by now. 

It is good to see many countries have Covid19 under control-there should be as good as no travel between those countries and those that failed to get Covid19 under control. Women are doing slightly worse, COPD/BMI 30+ risk factors-if you have 5+ symptoms during early illness there may be increased risk for long term health issues. DJ-Pandemics and politics have a complicated relationship. In 2019 some experts claimed the US,UK, and NL (NetherLands) would be most ready for dealing with a pandemic. A year later it is clear that-due to political decissions-these three countries did a poor job. They went for "herd immunity", "protecting the economy" and keep running behind the facts. 

China showed itself to be able to deal with this pandemic. Yes-they may have underestimated the outbreak in the beginning, may have given lower number of cases then the real numbers. But by "draconian rules" (wich may have cost some peoples lives) China did "smother" the outbreaks. 

Germany also showed their healtcare system was able to deal with large numbers belonging to a pandemic. Decission on keeping hospitals open-in the last decades-was a regional matter. Lots of countries did go for spending cuts on hospitals-Germany did not. Their ICU capacity saved many non-German lives as well-other European countries could bring patients to German hospitals if they ran out of capacity. In testing Germany had a "military style" system doing a superb job-that kind of organization they now will use for vaccinations. 

Another country doing very good is Finland. Social distancing is a way of life in that not that densely populated country-allthough most Finnish people live in the Helsinki area. In many ways Finland is "not the center" for global trade and traffic. 

Countries like Italy, France, Spain had draconian rules-during lockdowns-locking people up for weeks in-often-small apartments. That strategy worked but lifting limitations to soon did bring back the virus.

-Today we will go beyond the 1,5 million deaths, Poland crossed the 1 million cases yesterday, Iran will cross that line today.

-The US did see a record number of deaths yesterday 2833 (old record was 2744 april 21), the second highest number in new cases-per day-with 203,737 (record number was november 20 204,166). 

A part of the high numbers can be explained by delayed reporting of cases. We will see that also at the end of this month due to christmas and new year. The upward trend is clear-we most likely will be over 2 million deaths by january 1-2021.  Turkey started reporting the real number of cases-not just hospital cases. They may come with corrections on their numbers-putting that country also above the 1 million cases. 

Israel-as a small country-also see a strong upward trend. They had a strict lockdown. Started phased reopenings-but maybe even small steps came to soon. Also religious groups believe in prayer not in social distancing. 

Underreporting and lack of testing still is widespread. "Herd immunity" on a global scale-if even possible-still may be far away. 

The official number of reinfections (tested twice positive within several months) is still low-was 25 a few weeks ago. If there are a lot of side effects-or vaccinated people do get Covid it will influence the numbers as well. In NL there is some discussion on how fast we can get all of the almost 17.5 population vaccinated. One year ? Or faster ? Last week there was a 27% increase in COVID-19 positives compared with the week before. In the week from 2 to 8 December 43,103 newly tested COVID-19 positives were reported. This is an increase of 9,000 COVID-19 positives compared to the 33,949 COVID-19 positives reported the week before. In each safety region the number of newly tested positives also increased. This scenario is extremely unlikely.  "Safe Harbor" has occurred, all 50 states and the District Of Columbia have certified the election results.  Almost all of Trump's legal options have been exhausted, resulting in him winning only two out of more than 50 cases.  The rest have been denied, dismissed or withdrawn.  Word has it that the filed cases are becoming increasingly desperate and sloppy.  Bottom line is that the main beneficiary of Trump's ploy seems to be Biden, who received a small quantity of votes via recounts.  And more than 1000 people, mostly legal eagles, have signed an open letter calling on bar associations to disavow the conduct of Trump's legal team.

People dying from Covid19 do not die from heart disease, COPD, cancer....other statistics as causes of death go down. Statistics=simplification. The first article on statistics ignored excess deaths-there are now more people dying then when there is no pandemic. 

Another remark could be made on long term problems after (mild) Covid 19 infection. Believed 1 or 2% of all cases have health issues longer then three weeks-some for months.

-The (Cambridge-Ma-USA) Moderna vaccine-35$ per vaccine did see FDA approval. Soon vaccines will be spread around  "the rich countries". -The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is accepted already in a lot of countries (and yes-in a very limited number of cases people may not react alergic). Russian and Chinese vaccins are being exported/used around the globe. Moderna-vaccine can be stored in a fridge -20C and may help vaccinated people in not spreading the virus if they get infected. (DJ-In combination with very strict NPI vaccinations may buy us at least some extra time..) Dr.J.C. poor countries need vaccines as well, DJ-Russia, China will fill in that gap-at a cost. (Dr.J.C. is not following Russia/China vaccines while the may already be more used then western ones...)

- Pfizer-BioNTech peer review study; DJ In short-the messenger RNA goes into the cell (NOT into the DNA !!!) and puts the cells to create a "defense proteïne"on the outside of those cells as a defense recognizing a Covid19 virus. It is all very "nano=small"..the technique is new, Pfizer and Moderna both use mRNA-it is a scientific breakthrough at "warp speed" US-tax funded. 

Vaccine tested on cross-section of society, including BMU 30+, older people, all colors-good results. Side effects after vaccination (maybe a bit stronger then after a flu-shot) headache, fatigue-in younger age group 38C mild fever...DJ If used in care workers it would be wise to spread vaccinations...

Weak points is storage/transport at -70C and it is expensive 25$...Still it is being used already in several countries (UK, US)

-Dr.J.C. has made a few books available as downloads-also now for mobile phones. (He is very happy that he did find out how to get the pdf on his phone...). Much used in "poor" countries. If people can donate it is welcome....
