Exactly. Just a couple of weeks ago, on my college campus, two buildings I was in had bomb/biological agent threats and I had to be evacuated 2x that week. Is this going to be a monthly occurence or something?

Apparently the student killed the professor and himself because he didn't like his grade. Why can't today's society not accept rejections or failures without going to these lengths?

Good question, Hachi'.

I think the answer is in the way we treat small children.  We protect them from too much.  Then SUDDENLY when we think them "old enough" we stop.  Some people are unable to cope with the rapid change.

Yes, small children need some protection.  But if you make their lives too cosseted, they develop no ability to cope with life's struggles.

Year one of nursery, sports day: everyone wins - you have to start by instilling some personal confidence.

Year two nursery/year one of primary school: 1st, 2nd and third.  You can add in some consolation prizes too, but the ranking should start to emerge here - the young are very resilient and will cope surprisingly well.  If you keep putting this vital lesson off there will be trouble in later life.  Adults are LESS resilient, believe it or not.

Sadly, our whole western society has had an overeaction to the poor treatment of children in our historical past.  We used to use them as slave labour, "beat the devil out of them", and run their lives like a military camp.  Now we reward failure, hide truths (like sex or mankind's other potential nasties) and aim to entertain them 24/7.  Both are extremes and amount to abuse, its just the modern abuse is more subtle and slower to manifest its damage.

A favorite quote from Frank Herbert: "Don't handicap your children by making their lives easy."

How do you tell if a politician is lying?
His lips or pen are moving.

New twist, the former student had a kill list and killed two of three people on the list. http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2016/06/02/woman-on-kill-list-in-ucla-shooters-home-dead/?cid=facebook_CBS13_CBS_Sacramento

Spot on Techno- We teach our kids today that every ones a winner, there are no losers, everybody gets a trophy! Then we're surprised when they can't handle losing.
