Bird Flu is really going to be two crisis's not one.  Short term things like food, etc will be major concern.  Long term world trade will most likely be severely limited or shut down, something I've yet to see many here take in to account.  What do use, need or depend on that either comes from overseas or parts for it do?  Where are any life dependant medicines you use made?  What will you need in two years that has to come from outside of your country, your state, your city?

 

Top of my personal long term list are coffee and tea!  We are lucky in that neither of us use any drugs for life saving.

Hi Corky52,

this is a hard one.
What will I need in 2 years? Wow.

Problem is that I don't know what my situation will be by then:
Will I still have a job and can I buy things, will there indeed be anything TO buy or will a total ending of the world as we know it have happened ( a la Mad Max)?

There are several doom-scenarios one can pick from, including terrorists taking their chance to hit us when we are down...

I think I'll hope for the best and try to prepare for the pandemic itself.
After that.... keeping my fingers crossed that our society (and economy) will be able to scramble back on it's feet soon!

Marjo,

How long you think a pandemic is going to last?  How many waves of Flu will roll through and which will be the worst?  Live through the first and second waves only to die because you run out of a now unobtainable medicine that's only made in Europe, that's poor planning.  Again you're thinking in point even mode, good for hurricanes, earthquakes and such, where help can come from outside.  In a pandemic there is no outside and likely no help but your own bootstraps.

yes, sure.
But I don't know what I'll need afterwards, do I....?

Will I develop a heart-problem in 5 years? Will I get diabetis in 10?
Will I break my leg? Need glasses?

As I don't know such things beforehand, I have trouble thinking of items I could/should buy now, before the pandemic starts...

Can you give examples of the items/medicine you are thinking of?

If you have no medical problems now then the medicine analogue doesn't apply.   How about oil filters for you mode of transportation?  Most filter if not all are now imported, manufactured overseas.  The $10 oil filter today might be $100 if you can find one next year and for several years after.  Things break, wear out and run out,  I'm simply saying that looking at long term needs beyond food, water and shelter is needed.  The reboot of trading and commerce is going to take a while,  how long are your t-shirts going to last, nearly all of those are imported.

I don't know what you drive, but think of what parts for your car come from somewhere far away and would be impossible to rebuild.  The computer for instance, if it goes the car is useless, only scrap if you can't find the parts to keep it running.  I keep an old simple car around that I can keep running with bailing wire and chewing gum, not pretty but better than walking.  My pretty Honda has eaten two computers in three years, computers that are made in Singapore, might be hard to get for quite a while in a post Avian Flu world.

I have TWO old cars! LOL

Both have NO computer, no electric windows, no nothing (one doesn't even have heating, don't know if that is a plus LOL).
I can 'cannibalize'  one car to keep the other running if neccesary, but most parts can be bought very cheap/free  at one of the  car-dumps (don't know the word: place where you car goes when it 'dies' ??) around town.
I don't like cars that I can't work on myself.

I think I will have a look around the house to see what things I can't live without and could get broken (My dishwasher!!!! ).

Uhhh, no.  Not unless they are the same make, model and year. Same model type cars even 1-2 years apart can have very different parts throughout the car.  The bolt patterns and parts shapes (think seals) can be alot different. 

Yea, some "different" parts might work but most will not.
