Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 50 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude.
Induced Currents - Power system voltage irregularities possible, false alarms may be triggered on some protection devices.
Spacecraft - Systems may experience surface charging; increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites and orientation problems may occur.
Navigation - Intermittent satellite navigation (GPS) problems, including loss-of-lock and increased range error may occur.
Radio - HF (high frequency) radio may be intermittent.
Aurora - Aurora may be seen as low as Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon.

No, I have not gone mad.  The microwave (off) is just the handiest Faraday cage.

The candles and matches sit handy.  'Can't afford to lose the numbers on the phone - eventually the system comes back, even if I have to use them on a rebuilt landline.

Any idea when the alert lasts until?

The police here have suggested that  'smart ' car keys be kept in a fridge to stop their signal being hijacked to open the car.  Similar technical reasons of being a Faraday cage.

Bloody Hell!!!

That is a long time.  

If we are moving in deeper, then things could get quite nasty (theoretically).  Perhaps: forget the phone and take the solenoids out of the car instead and put them in the microwave.  

                           Or better still buy a horse.
