ABC Radio Australia

Radio Australia - News - Vietnamese officials accused of stealing from bird flu fund

Two officials in southern Vietnam have been dismissed for allegedly embezzeling funds allocated for fighting bird flu in their district.

Authorities in An Giang province say the head of the district agriculture department and an accountant were sacked last month.

They are accused of stealing US$5,000 from anti-bird flu fund in 2004 and 2005,

In total, 26 of Vietnam's 64 provinces have been hit by bird flu outbreaks, with four million poultry culled since early October.

The country has not recorded any new outbreaks in the last two months.

Outbreak in Africa, China

An outbreak of the H5N1 strain of bird flu has been detected among poultry in Nigeria, the first time the virus has been found in Africa.

The World Organisation for Animal Health says the outbreak occurred on a commercial chicken farm in Jaji, in northern Kaduna state.

A team of experts is being sent to the area.

Meanwhile, China has reported another outbreak of bird flu on a poultry farm in the northern province of Shanxi.

Authorities say they have culled more than 187,000 chickens and the outbreak has been brought under control.

China has reported more than 30 outbreaks of the virus among poultry since the beginning of last year, with most appearing since October.

The bird flu virus has killed at least 88 people around the world since it re-emerged in late 2003.

I am so appalled by this!! How many have died in Vietnam that these funds could have bought anti-virals for. I think a fitting punishment might be making them care for the bird flu victims themselves in the future.

CountryGirl, I fully agree.  But it must be kept in mind that in most of the world graft is a way of life.  This doesn't make it right, it just makes it a fact.  Remember what happened in Indonesia.

Does excessive drug company profiteering count as graft? The West is just as corrupt in my opinion, on a much larger scale, its just done differently.

What exactly do you consider profiteering, elbows?  Making a profit on your product?
I'm not afraid, I'm paranoid. Dont talk too loud, they are listening.

No, not profit-making in general. Actually as I try to reply I realise that I cannot explain myself in a concise way on this issue, and I dont want to cause a disturbance here by ranting about stuff that is only vaguely related to avian flu.

I apologise for my earlier post and for copping out of giving you a proper reply.

Elbows, your post was valid although not exactly the way I would have worded it, but oh well there.

Until we replace the free market (God preserve us) business charges what the market bears.  If we didn't demand the "latest and greatest" new whiz bang drugs, we wouldn't be paying or charged "obscene" prices for our medications.  And whether you are aware of it or not, drug manufacturers donate medication to any who can not afford it, all it takes is a letter from your physician stating your condition, medication need, and inability to pay for same.

All of us who feel the medical system in the US is in need of an overhaul can take comfort in the belief that if a pandemic strikes, it will be the medical system that will fall first and fall the hardest.
