Could someone please point me to a thread on this site that doesn't lead into some kind of politics?

Prior to the Presidential election I gave up on this site because no matter what I tried to read, it turned into a political bout.

I have since checked back in every month or so and it hasn't improved.  This use to be a place where you could get some good information, have a chance at being ahead of any potential problems and generally be accepted unless you deliberately started something.  If that information is here I can't seem to find it.  And believe it or not, there are people who might visit here who are as sick of politics as I am.

Perhaps the Moderators could create a Political thread and all of you could have at it and leave the rest of us in peace?

Generally the advice to avoid the politics would be to go to the News section and avoid the General Discussion.  To be honest, there is not a lot of new emergent disease on the horizon at the moment.  There was a report of a case of one human fatality from an avian strain in China (an amazingly low number, considering their farming practices) and there seems to be a rise in cases of lyme disease.  Generally it has been unusually quiet.

Now one of us has remarked on the quietude, all hell will probably break loose.  That is what happened last time.

as long a it stays in general disscussion ,its ok,

maybe the powers that be could shift any political stuff to GD,

I quite like the political stuff,

debate is good, but lets not get NASTY about it,

keep it light hearted, and agree to differ  Cool

Thanks!  Politics plays a huge role in our preparedness for infectious disease outbreaks, EMP events and other disasters.  Look at what is going on in Houston:

These events were the result of willful decisions made by politicians in Texas to favor the chemical production industry, weaken regulations and keep the public ill-informed.

Unfortunately, public health is always a football in the world of politics....budgets are always cut back until the inevitable emergency arises, and then there is a rush to re-build capacity and infrastructure that was left to deteriorate from neglect.

Bird flu is a good case in point.  H5N1 training, preparation and equipment was mandatory for hospitals, public health agencies and others, but because we haven't had a deadly pandemic, the supplies are now outdated, antivirals expired, and training programs halted.  This only gets worse under the present administration.

Just wait.  It is just a matter of probability and time before a reassortment virus, likely influenza from swine and avian sources, erupts on the face of society.

Politics matters.  Not that Democrats have done much better than Republicans, mind you.

Thanks for the responses ☺. I've noticed the news being in a lull. In the past, when something big was going on, the people here would discuss how they were handling things if it was affecting them in some way. It could have been a storm, wildfires, or any number of issues. People seemed to be supportive of each other and there could be tidbits we could all gather to help or own preparedness. It's just very frustrating to see everything diverted to politics.

Hurricane Harvey is a perfect example. Everyone seems to be locked into discussions about the political ramifications. Forums like this one would be a great place to learn about what's actually happening to the people, how they are dealing with the day to day recovery, what they could have had a better handle on, etc. The MSM has locked onto Houston, but there are a lot of other areas we don't hear about. These types of things are found in the General Discussion area.

I realize this is my own personality flaw. I'm much more of a person who tries to live in the here and now and learn what I can for myself and my family. There's only so much time in a day and I don't waste it discussing the things I can't do anything about anyway.

I'm sure Hurricane Irma will be all Trump's fault, except for the fact that Obama could have done things better. Let's all just blame Bush and move on.

ParanoidMom, did you look at the off-topic section of this forum ? I am Dutch, tired of our own politicians-not waiting for endless discussions on US "presidents".....

Pandemics, etc are serious news-items mostly not making news....in my opinion politics is a form of airpolution....

Hey!  Bush was far from perfect, but he did try to do the right thing.  Junior that is - Senior could do no wrong!

I have posted a thread on the outbreak of flu in Australia which in in the gist of the original content of this site. Just because CDC and other agencies won't report flu really or disease until the American Flu Season which officially is in October, doesn't me we don't have serious health issues, even pre=Pandemics lurking around the world. We do.

Many viruses and bacterial infections are reaching states where they are immune to all antibiotics and antivirals.

Our medical system is definitely not ready to handle a Pandemic and not only one but perhaps 2-3 at a time are coming.

Personally I never it when people start hammering on each other over politics or religion. It was a sore subject at every Thanksgiving or Christmas with our family, a few of whom got drunk and it sometimes neared physical violence and ruined the dinner.

It would seem to be the mainstay of the elderly and armchair generals who once in the parks would gesture with great emotion and curse those in power and the younger generation.

Disease - is a much greater threat than nukes to a point - but even greater if we are faced with both. I too, long for the "Good Old Days" on AFT.
