A Japanese nuclear energy station is relying on emergency back up power after a powerful earthquake knocked out electricity on the northern island of Hokkaido on Thursday, a stark reminder of the Fukushima disaster more than seven years ago. The three-reactor Tomari nuclear plant, operated by Hokkaido Electric Power (9509.T) and in shutdown since the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster, lost power after a magnitude 6.7 quake hit the island in the early hours, the government said. The station's fuel rods are being cooled with emergency power supplied by diesel generators, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters on Thursday. There were no radiation irregularities at the plant, Suga said, citing the operator. The atomic regulator said the diesel generators have enough fuel to last seven days. More than 100 have been injured and 19 are missing following the quake, according to broadcaster NHK.

DJ-The Tomari-plant has been shut down since the Fukushima-quake in 2011. One of the three reactors was restarted-and shut down in 2012. https://www.pambazuka.org/governance/help-us-shut-down-tomari-nuclear-power-plant

DJ-Main risks;

-under reporting-dieselgenerators should be cooling the fuel-rods. It could be that problems are underestimated.
-there have been close to 50 quakes in total last 24hrs. Is it a fore-shock, bigger quake on its way ?

Lots of rain and wind on its way

More quakes and extreme weather could cause more problems the coming hours/days.

DJ-"normal"electricity returned after a break of 9 hours after the quake. The north-wind would blow any radiation towards Eastern Russia. So Russia is the main foreign country monitoring the situation.

Most likely risk-level at Tomari-N.P. is back to normal.
