So does that mean only acetaminophen is alright to take if you have a virus?  It is my least favorite to take because it does absolutely nothing for my headaches.  Maybe it is ok on fever though I guess.  Interesting!

The source is a little off center. The cdc source ,mentioned on this website, states using NSAIDS such as motrin, alleve etc. NO contra indications.
Fever is a good thing and fever of 104 does NOT create siezures and brain damage. Febrile seizures usually occur in infants and toddlers due to the rapid rise of temperature. At 107 F well you're brain is well not there any more. Patients with pituitary disease may go to 114F but they are mentally incompetent and have uncontrollable seizures

Second; dehydration section: a pulse of ninety is not alarming. Someone with a rapid heart rate-110 120 and above, yes. But to use a heart rate to decide a dehyration staus is inaccurate. Use the moistness of the mouth. Stringy saliva at 2.5% dehydration.5% poor tearing.10% NOtears and poor skin turgor( when you gently pull up some of the skin on the abdominal it is slow to go back down)
Nutmeg is a hallucinogen please use with caution

Dr D. wasn't there just a massive amount of data released on the damage of tylenol causing liver damage. So much so they were about to discontinue Vicodin and other heavy tylenol drugs.

http://www.aboutlawsuits.com/tylenol-liver-side-effects-warrant-stronger-warnings-4130/

FDA

FDA officials released a report yesterday in advance of an independent advisory panel meeting scheduled for next month, indicating that stronger warnings are necessary about potential side effects of Tylenol and other painkillers containing acetaminophen, due to the potential risk of liver damage.

The report was released by an FDA working group studying over-the-counter acetaminophen, to provide information for the panel of outside experts convened by the FDA to weigh the drug’s risks and make recommendations about what, if any, regulatory actions are necessary. Although the FDA is not required to follow the recommendations of their advisory panels, they often do.

FDA officials indicated in the report that more stringent warnings about Tylenol liver damage risks are necessary because high doses of acetaminophen can cause serious injuries. Such high doses could occur unintentionally, when consumers do not realize they are taking multiple medications with the drug as the active ingredient, which is common in pain relief and cold medications. In addition, the use of alcohol together with Tylenol or other acetaminophen drugs also could increase the risk of liver damage.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/02/tylenol-liver-damage-prom_n_224756.html

I hope all of you heavy Tylenol users have seen the news about the drug that came out around July 1st (2009), to wit:

FDA: “Tylenol = Liver Damage”?
source

Even a small amount of Tylenol and similar generic brands of acetaminophen could cause liver damage. The FDA’s newest guidelines say the maximum daily dose listed on Tylenol and dozens of other painkillers should be reduced to help curb deadly overdoses, according to several news announcements published by the Associated Press on June 30, 2009.

As far back as 2006, studies like the FDA finding warned consumers that acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol and similar generic brands with the same ingredients is dangerous for liver damage. This comes in the face of the fact that Tylenol is Americans’ over-the-counter painkiller of choice. Acetaminophen overdose is also the leading cause of acute liver damage and failure according to the FDA.

According to the 2006 article, “Tylenol Found to Cause Liver Damage, Even in Small Doses,” published July 5, 2006 in Natural News, “Healthy adults who took the maximum dose of Tylenol for two weeks were found to have liver damage,” according to a study the FDA found in the July 2006 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. See, “Aminotransferase Elevations in Healthy Adults Receiving 4 Grams of Acetaminophen Daily: A Randomized Controlled Trial,” Paul B. Watkins; Neil Kaplowitz; John T. Slattery; Connie R. Colonese; Salvatore V. Colucci; Paul W. Stewart; Stephen C. Harris, JAMA. 2006;296:87-93.

Med
I know Dr D 's response is pending.  I know the worst cases of tylenol related hepatitis I have ever seen were in people who drank with the tylenol, vicoden, percocet, etc.....
Tylenol toxic per your source, and I think it is even worse when ingested with other liver toxic items-like alcohol.  With psychiatric medications the worst reactions are with daily alcohol use even at moderate levels, don't know about tylenol.  The reactions I saw were with LOTS of alcohol, bad hepatitis that went on for months.
I am finding a little rest does wonders for crankiness and oversensitivity (referring to myself).

Doc D... thanks for making the temp thing clear... I posted good info on temp at swineflu.org   if someone can get it off there? it was on fever in children... perhaps I posted it a month ago?  It may even be on this thread.

here is more info... Doc D... feel free to go over this ...  I thought the photo was good... this is a very sick person...puffy eyes.  I almost went in to the the Doc today but I was too tired.

sore throat at it's worst this morn...better now.   I don't know why they want very ill people crowding in...I was shocked...as the Doc in W'burg called in my med for me...
the 1918 Doc said if you get it stay down...  my BP was way up when I tried to get coffee this morn.  Then It went back down... never expecterd it to hang on like this.  My dau is ahead of me on getting over it...she had the low blood pressure they mentioned.

I['m back to laying down...  the depression part is feeling worried you won't get well because you are sick so long.

Med I also saw that on tylenol type med... perhaps for long term use?
Then I saw this site about how Ibuprofhen is bad during a flu... (in case of bleeding...worst case scenario)

Brits are telling their people NO Ibuprofen...

here is more info...

Milder Symptoms of Swine Flu

So far, many of the swine influenza cases have been fairly mild, except in Mexico. Milder cases of pig flu might have these swine flu symptoms:

  • Fever - Your fever can be high, over 101 degrees F for adults, and it can occur very quickly.

  • Cough - This sometimes has a "barking" sound.

  • Hoarseness - This is a symptom that distinguishes the Swine Flu from normal seasonal flu.

  • Sore throat - This can be severe, but probably not as bad as a strep throat.

  • Depression - This is listed as a symptom of swine flu. However, if you're sick, you probably feel depressed, no matter what you have!

  • Body aches - Aching bones and muscles.

  • Headache

  • Chills

  • Fatigue or extreme tiredness

  • Diarrhea

  • Vomiting

No one knows what this virus will end up doing (viruses mutate quickly and then, have new characteristics), so we should be prepared to see more severe symptoms. And, in truth, there have been some reported cases with these symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Respiratory failure - inability to breath.

If you have the above symptoms, your illness is very serious, and you may need to be under hospital care and placed on oxygen or possibly a ventilator.

So, make sure you know what the symptoms of swine flu look like—and, if anyone in your family gets sick with these symptoms, you need to be ready to act on their behalf!

Some updates are needed on the coming second wave including a due date of August 25 for some real eye openers. We have been in the trenches or ERs with little time to post.
Some are headed up to D.C. and also to some M.D. and M.C. type think tanks meetings to deal with a nasty thing that is on the way.

If you will go back to 1898 and do some real research on several pandemics that played out mild and nice and then got really nasty-the warm and fluffy spin which become a staple diet is going to lose a lot of followers when the real deal smacks us in 2-8 weeks.

Most of the infrastructure in moving on this behind the scenes and its great the public is all laid back and comfy- but we may be due for quite a second wave.

Don't get too comfy. Its not over yet.

ohhh I'm not comfy  :)    feels like something has camped out in my throat.  All I can say is.
Do for the little guys.... try to find vacs that are newer safer single dose ...tell your child's Ped. that is what you want...and be sure your littles have had a whooping cough shot...or any newer needed vacs...ask.   Express your thoughts ...ideas...fears.  We had family in the 57 pandemic... little one went to hosp. did tent thing .. went home ...was fine.  Most people do ok.
Remember that.

A SINGLE DOSE MAY NOT CONFER IMMUNITY That is why you have a series of vaccines not just a single dose. THat's what happened with the MMR and now the Varicella

SWINEY FLU
.........................

You Don't Need a ..   FEVER.

An Excellent Article from-

The New York Times
..........................................

Published: August 10, 2009

The Doctor's World
Seeking Lessons in Swine Flu Fight

In full...well worth reading here-

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/11/health/11docs.html?_r=1

excerpts-

...Officials and experts say they have learned a lot about human swine influenza. But relatively little of that information, including periodic summaries of what has been learned since the beginning of the pandemic, has been reported and published.

(This is disturbubing... how amazingly unfortunate)

Some experts said researchers were waiting to publish in journals, which can take months or longer. Journals impose severe penalties for disclosing information before publication, although they say they exempt matters of public health importance.

Whatever the reason, delays in reporting such information can hamper plans for public health responses.

...The standard definition of influenza includes a fever. But an odd feature of the new virus is the lack of fever in a significant proportion of documented cases, even after some patients become seriously ill.

The New York Times
By LAWRENCE K. ALTMAN, M.D.
Published: August 10, 2009

excerpts-
...Over all, the pandemic's severity has been "moderate" compared with past influenza pandemics, the World Health Organization says,

...Dr. Wenzel, a former president of the International Society for Infectious Diseases, said he had observed a broad spectrum of illness from human swine influenza: people who experienced few or no symptoms to those who rapidly developed complications and died.

...So absence of fever among substantial proportions of patients, when fever is specified in the definition, can cause serious underestimation of case totals.
Also, absence of fever limits the usefulness of thermal scans to identify people who have the virus and thus control the pandemic.

...The course of illness can become life-threatening in just a few hours among patients who had shown only mild symptoms, Dr. Wenzel said, but his visits showed that "doctors know little about what treatment works in severe cases."

...Doctors actively involved in patient care are hampered by the lack of a standard, reliable rapid test to determine if a patient has swine influenza or some other respiratory illness.

.........................

more findings on Swine pandemic flu...

..It appears that this flu produces a distinctive "hoarseness" in many victims.

...- N-Acetyl-Cysteine -- a nutritional supplement available at the health food store or Wimberley Pharmacy, has been shown to prevent or lessen the severity of influenza. I suggest 1200mg, twice a day for adults, and 600mg twice a day in kids over 12. It would be hard to get kids under 12 to take it, but you could try opening the capsules and putting it on yogurt. (applesauce?) For 40 pounds and up, 300-600 mg twice a day, for less than 40 pounds, half that.

...If I had to choose, I would take Relenza, as I think it gets more drug to the affected tissue than Tamiflu.

...Oscillococinum, a homeopathic remedy, has been vindicated as quite effective in a large clinical trial in Europe, with an H1N1 variant.

Analysis: Dr. Marcus Gitterle is a real person, Medical Director of the emergency room of Christus Santa Rosa hospital in New Braunfels, Texas. According to local news reports and postings on his own "Health-Sense" blog

Mary- the spin is - don't worry- it's no big problem. The biggest problem (and a number are out of it locally here with 'something' that is filling up the ERs.- despite - skirmishes in posting here- I am getting some hard core stuff digging deep- and also seeing the net and media being absolutely flooded with almost cliche spin.

We have reports from people working at hospitals of dozens of people being admitted and deaths from Swine Flu which are not being reported to public or media and kept totally in the black.

Doctors who are giving us information are getting mashed netwise- this include M.D.s who are breaking rank and sharing reports they are getting of the situation as opposed to the spin put out to the public.

Scientists by the hundreds are also breaking rank along with virologists, epideminologists because they actually CARE ABOUT PEOPLE- and while saying the current Pandemic is mild- that TPTB are very concerned and acting unusually reactive (declaring a Pandemic) to a flu strain less virulent than seasonal flu.

This one is different. And we can show it DID NOT exist in the general population for decades.

Creepy huh- well try live virus in vaccines shipped in Europe which has never been explained. Also cases of meningitis which are popping up with also symptoms of Noro (a 40% involvement) I document this one with 3 virologists and some mainstream.

Are we being kept informed of the outbreaks? Let try stop counting the cases, stop reporting cases, keeping a private tally and also using an algorithm to calculate the real numbers in the general population and sharing numbers in the millions of cases while formallly publishing ten of thousands.

The formal numbers are not accurate at all. They hardly even give us a foundation to work on in combating the outbreaks or treatment of the disease.

I am starting a new Level 6 thread- I had done that originally when the story broke and we were there cyber when Dr. Chan was on video live - having told friends 2 hours before of the Pandemic.

Watchdog opposes fast-track vaccine for school children
.....................................................................................

The US government is intending to vaccinate all children in September when school re-opens,

and the country's vaccine watchdog National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC)

has called on the Obama Administration and all state Governors to provide evidence that the move is [6]

 "necessary and safe",

demanding

"strong mechanisms for vaccine safety screening, recording, monitoring, reporting and vaccine injury compensation."

The US Departments of Health and Homeland Security had declared

a national public health emergency in April soon after the swine flu outbreak.

.....................................................

The CDC wants Parents to be aware of Vaccine Safety....

They have a special PDF .... Please read All of it

and know what members of your family should not have certain vaccines.

Not everyone should have all vaccines.... read the PDF...

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/vac-admin/downloads/contraindications_guide.pdf

Here are just a FEW examples....

live attenuated influenza vaccine  =  LAIV

Antiviral medications
........................................

It is not known whether administering influenza antiviral medications affects the safety or efficacy of live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV);

LAIV should not be administered until 48 hours following cessation of influenza antiviral therapy,

and

influenza antiviral medications should not be administered for 2 weeks following receipt of LAIV.

Guillian-Barre syndrome  .  GBS
...................................................................

Whether influenza vaccination specifically might increase the risk for recurrence of GBS is not known; therefore, avoiding vaccinating persons who are not at high risk for severe influenza complications and who are known to have developed GBS within 6 weeks after a previous influenza vaccination is prudent.

Although data are limited, for the majority of persons who have a history of GBS and who are at high risk for severe complications from influenza, the established benefits of influenza vaccination justify yearly vaccination.

Persons with chronic disorders of the cardiovascular system
should not get live attenuated influenza vaccine.

Persons with asthma, reactive airways disease or other chronic disorders of the pulmonary or cardiovascular systems and persons with other underlying medical conditions, including metabolic diseases such as diabetes, renal dysfunction, and hemoglobinopathies

should not receive LAIV.

Women should avoid becoming pregnant for 4 weeks following vaccination.

LAIV should not be administered to children younger than 5 years of age with recurrent wheezing.

Please read the Entire CDC PDF>>>>>

Of course it is always risky to say that because influenza vaccine manufacturing is not

always as predictable as you would like. And sometimes we have surprises.

But at this point we're expecting there to be a reasonably large numbers of doses

available and the middle of October is the point that we're looking at

that we hope to be able to launch a vaccine program, assuming several factors in terms of

safe and effective vaccine is available and no big change in the antigen properties,

we're planning the middle of October timeline.
