Denmark talks about..
The new strategy
.................................
...Efforts will be focused on the flu-sick belonging to risk groups and
those at risk for serious illness and their close contacts, belonging to the same
risk groups. Inoculation and antiviral therapy
The specific efforts include:
Inoculation of influenza disease: only those who are themselves at risk or have a close contact at risk
Antiviral therapy initiated
only to persons at risk Antiviral preventive treatment applied only to contacts of laboratory confirmed cases, when contact is at risk.
An example: An otherwise healthy father get flu-like illness.
The family lives a child with a stable, well controlled asthma (ie not covered by a grade). They should not be innoculated or given antivirals. Family can refer to general advice on
Health Protection Agency website, which further addresses the usual clinical practice.
It must be remembered that although it is a relatively mild flu-type disease is new and
will be more than usual targeting children and young adults.
Should there arise serious illness, even in non-risk patients, it is important to respond
appropriately
end.

.
People born after 1957 do not have a lot of protection against the novel AH1N1 (swine flu)
Ask your Doctor Now...about single dose non adjuvented vaccine.
ask if it will be available for people other than pregnant women and 0-5 or age 9?
They need to know what you want.
ask about Sanofi Vacccine.
There isn't enough of the good stuff for more than a few target groups... so the woman
saying ... go get the vaccine.... is a little ahead of the game.

.................................
adjuvants are more than a mix of oil and water. .................................................................. In vaccine development, squalene has been used as an adjuvant, which increases the immune response of vaccines that would otherwise be too weak to offer protection. A squalene adjuvant was used in a cytomegalovirus vaccine.[1] Some animal studies have found adverse effects, such as weakness, from squalene, and some veterans have claimed that squalene adjuvant in vaccines was responsible for Gulf War Syndrome. Inorganic adjuvants Aluminium salts There are many adjuvants, some of which are inorganic (such as alum), that also carry the potential to augment immunogenicity.[7][8] Two common salts include aluminum phosphate and aluminum hydroxide. These are the most common adjuvants in human vaccines. Organic adjuvants While Aluminium salts are popularly used in human vaccines, the organic compound Squalene is also used. However, organic adjuvants are more commonly used in animal vaccines. Oil-based Oil-based adjuvants are commonly used in some veterinary vaccines. Virosomes Another market-approved adjuvant and carrier system are virosomes.[9] During the last two decades, a variety of technologies have been investigated to improve the widely-used adjuvants based on aluminum salts.[10] These salts are unfavorable, since they develop their effect by inducing local inflammation, which is also the basis for the extended side-effect pattern of this adjuvant. In contrast, the adjuvant capabilities of virosomes are independent of any inflammatory reaction. Virosomes contain a membrane-bound hemagglutinin and neuraminidase derived from the influenza virus, and serve to amplify fusogenic activity and therefore facilitate the uptake into antigen presenting cells (APC) and induce a natural antigen-processing pathway. The delivery of the antigen by virosomes to the immune system in a way that mimics a natural path may be a reason why virosome-based vaccines stand out due to their excellent safety profile.[11] Experimental adjuvants An increasing number of vaccines with squalene and phosphate adjuvants are being tested on humans.[12] The compound QS21 is under investigation as a possible immunological adjuvant[13] as is Novartis' (formerly Chiron) MF59.[14] (wikipedia)

Posted: 11 August 2009 at 10:39pm More on ...... adjuvants..... ............................................................ Dr. Mercola explains the effects of squalene injected into humans in this excerpt from his article on the subject: The difference between "good" and "bad" squalene is the route by which it enters your body. Injection is an abnormal route of entry which incites your immune system to attack all the squalene in your body, not just the vaccine adjuvant.
Your immune system will attempt to destroy the molecule wherever it finds it, including in places where it occurs naturally, and where it is vital to the health of your nervous system.[viii]
Gulf War veterans with Gulf War Syndrome (GWS) received anthrax vaccines which contained squalene.[ix] MF59 (the Novartis squalene adjuvant) was an unapproved ingredient in experimental anthrax vaccines and has since been linked to the devastating autoimmune diseases suffered by countless Gulf War vets.[x]
The Department of Defense made every attempt to deny that squalene was indeed an added contaminant in the anthrax vaccine administered to Persian Gulf war military personnel - deployed and non-deployed - as well as participants in the more recent Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program (AVIP).
However, the FDA discovered the presence of squalene in certain lots of AVIP product. A test was developed to detect anti-squalene antibodies in GWS patients, and a clear link was established between the contaminated product and all the GWS sufferers who had been injected with the vaccine containing squalene.
........................... ....
from W.H.O. Are squalene-containing vaccines safe?
Over 22 million doses of squalene-containing flu vaccine have been administered. The absence of significant vaccine-related adverse events following this number of doses suggests that squalene in vaccines has no significant risk. This vaccine has been given primarily to older age groups.
As this vaccine and new squalene-containing vaccines are introduced in other age groups, post-marketing follow-up to detect any vaccine-related adverse events will need to be performed.

The new vaccine is made with squalene oil as an adjuvant. According to Dr. Viera Scheibner, micropaleontologist and world renowned researcher in the field of vaccine effectiveness and danger, squalene "contributed to the cascade reactions known as Gulf War Syndrome. GIs developed arthritis, fibromyalgia, lymphadenopathy, photosensitive rashes, malar rashes, chronic fatigue, chronic headaches, abnormal body hair loss, non-healing skin lesions, aphthous ulcers, dizziness, weakness, memory loss, seizures, mood changes, neuropsychiatric problems, anti-thyroid effects, anemia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, systemic lupus arythmatosus, multiple sclerosis, deadly Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Raynaud's Syndrome with paroxysms of lack of blood in fingers and toes, Sjogren's Syndrome with blurred vision, chronic diarrhea, night sweats, and low grade fever." In 2002, a U.S. federal judge ruled that there was good cause to believe squalene to be harmful. He ordered the Pentagon to stop endorsing its use. cont. here-

US buys 195m vaccine doses
2009-07-23 18:53 Article Tools Share Get News24 on Gaithersburg, Maryland - The US government has bought 195 million doses of H1N1 swine flu vaccine for a possible autumn vaccination campaign, a US federal official said on Thursday.
............... The US Health and Human Services Department (HHS) has also contracted for 120 million doses of adjuvant, a compound to stretch the number of vaccine doses needed, the department's Dr Robin Robinson told a meeting of Food and Drug Administration advisers. ................ Five companies are making H1N1 vaccine for the US market - AstraZeneca's MedImmune unit, Australia's CSL Ltd, GlaxoSmithKline Plc, Novartis AG and Sanofi-Aventis SA.
Earlier, an FDA official said vaccine makers were only getting about 30% as much vaccine from eggs as they usually get with seasonal influenza vaccine.
Robinson said HHS had accounted for this in planning for a possible influenza pandemic.
"We thought manufacturers would probably get a low or poor yield. That has been borne out," Robinson told the meeting.
He said HHS had planned to have 160 million doses available right away, and then 80 million a month afterward. It would take until March at this rate to vaccinate the full US population of 300 million people with two doses each, Robinson said.
The five vaccine-making companies will tell the FDA committee later on Thursday about what they have learned as they work with the virus, which spread globally in less than two months.
World Health Organisation and US health officials have said they want to start vaccinating people against H1N1, alongside regular seasonal flu, in October. The FDA has to approve this vaccine before it can be used but FDA officials indicated earlier on Thursday they would like to speed this process.

From >>>>>>>>> FLU.GOV Will HHS be providing liability protection for vaccine manufacturers? And will HHS compensate eligible individuals who might be injured by a vaccine? PREP Act .................. On June 15, 2009 ............................................., HHS Secretary Sebelius signed a declaration under the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act to extend liability immunity against tort claims (except for willful misconduct) to individuals and entities involved in all stages of 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine development, testing, manufacture, distribution, prescribing, administration, and use. Liability immunity means that there is no legal tort claim that can be pursued in state or federal court. Individuals and entities that receive liability immunity under the declaration include manufacturers, distributors, States, locals, Tribes, and other entities that supervise or administer a vaccination program, and healthcare professionals or others authorized under State law to prescribe, administer, and dispense vaccines, when they are carrying out activities in accordance with the conditions stated in the declaration. One condition of the declaration is that the vaccination activities must relate to a present or future federal contract, grant, cooperative agreement, interagency agreement, or memorandum of understanding. Vaccines procured by the federal government for distribution are included. PREP Act declarations are intended to encourage manufactures to produce vaccine, and other entities to participate in distribution, dispensing, administration, and use of the vaccine. The PREP Act also authorizes the Department to establish a compensation program when a declaration is issued under the Act. Funds for a compensation program were provided under the June 24 Supplemental Appropriations Act. The Department is currently working on developing a compensation program for eligible individuals who sustain covered injuries following vaccination. This is a nasty infection...
Can you name it? ................................ here are some hints ....................................... fever, runny nose
conjunctivitis, tonsilitis
cannot be distinguished from strep
cause gastroenteritis (stomach flu)
cause coughing fits that look almost exactly like whooping cough
bronchiolitis or pneumonia, both of which can be severe.
cause viral meningitis or encephalitis
rarely causes ... (inflammation of the urinary bladder w/bllod in urine)
people with immunodeficiency sometimes die
transmitted by coughed-out droplets by contact with an infected person,
by virus particles left on objects such as towels and faucet handles.
(some) may shed the virus in their stools for months after getting over the symptoms.
NO vaccine
What is it? have you guessed it?
Main article: Adenovirus infection
........................................................... Most infections with adenovirus result in infections of the upper respiratory tract. Adenovirus infections often show up as conjunctivitis, tonsilitis (which may look exactly like strep throat and cannot be distinguished from strep except by throat culture), an ear infection, or croup.
Adenoviruses can also cause gastroenteritis (stomach flu). A combination of conjunctivitis and tonsilitis is particularly common with adenovirus infections. Some children (especially small ones) can develop adenovirus bronchiolitis or pneumonia, both of which can be severe.
In babies, adenoviruses can also cause coughing fits that look almost exactly like whooping cough. Adenoviruses can also cause viral meningitis or encephalitis. Rarely, adenovirus can cause cystitis (inflammation of the urinary bladder- a form of urinary tract infection - with blood in the urine).
Most people recover from adenovirus infections by themselves, but people with immunodeficiency sometimes die of adenovirus infections, and- rarely -even previously healthy people can die of these infections.[5]
Adenoviruses are often transmitted by coughed-out droplets, but can also be transmitted by contact with an infected person, or by virus particles left on objects such as towels and faucet handles. Some people with adenovirus gastroenteritis may shed the virus in their stools for months after getting over the symptoms.
The virus can be passed from one person to another through some sexual practices, and through water in swimming pools that do not have enough chlorine in them. As with many other illnesses, good handwashing is one way to lessen the spread of adenoviruses from one person to another. Heat and bleach will kill adenoviruses on objects.

Adenovirus compare it to Swine Flu (above)
Shedding of the virus can occur for months or years after the initial infection.

Today, nearly 90 percent of recruits are susceptible to adenovirus type 4 or 7. Since 1999 when the supply of vaccine tablets was depleted, the calculated normal rate of respiratory diseases at the training sites increased, occasionally spiking to a substantially elevated level. Measures taken to stem respiratory diseases include detailed and continued instruction on personal hygiene (such as rigorous hand-washing and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing), spacing and head-to-toe sleeping arrangements, use of bicillin at some installations, and conceptual (no funding at this time) work on anti-viral medications. While the numbers of basic trainees at the major sites vary during the course of the year, we had about 56,000 trainees during the month of August 2003 that we estimated about 2,500 cases of adenovirus. Barr Laboratories, Forest, Virginia (Corporate headquarters in Pomona, NY) received the contract award in 2001 to develop and produce adenovirus vaccine. Construction of the vaccine manufacturing facility is complete, and necessary equipment has been installed. Barr Laboratories submitted an Investigational New Drug (IND) application to the FDA in July 2004. Phase I clinical trials are underway at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, with approximately 70 subjects. We will complete Phase I trials during fall 2004. Phase II and III combined trials will begin early in 2005 at several sites. DoD believes it will be possible to begin using the vaccine following these trials under an IND protocol so that we have vaccine available for trainees in 2006. We estimate that following the initial investments in vaccine production (over $50M), the cost of vaccine will approximate $4M annually. Only the military services use adenovirus vaccine, and they use it at basic training installations for incoming recruit trainees. To our knowledge, Barr Laboratories is the only company, worldwide, in the process of producing this vaccine.

You need to ask questions about The seasonal Flu vaccine

hi... we should keep in mind that ALL Multi Dose Vials are Adjuvented...
ask for single dose vial. My Doc uses single dose... they even showed it to us... nice.
Thimerosal (an ethylmercury-containing preservative) is present in some formulations of inactivated influenza vaccine. In the US, multi-dose vials of inactivated vaccine contain about 25 mcg of mercury per 0.5-mL dose, while single-dose formulations contain <1 mcg per dose, and some are thimerosal-free. There has been public concern that thimerosal-containing vaccines might cause autism, but the evidence from numerous epidemiological studies does not support a causal connection. 4....................................... Sanofi Pasteur Submits Supplemental Application For A(H1N1) Pandemic Vaccine To U.S. FDA
Medical News Today
........................................ Article Date: 08 Aug 2009 - 1:00 PDT
Excerpt-
Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of the sanofi-aventis Group (EURONEXT: SAN and NYSE: SNY), announced the company has submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) a supplemental application for licensure of its influenza A(H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccine. Responding to recent recommendations by the FDA, the company's supplemental application requests the
FDA's evaluation of the influenza A(H1N1) 2009 strain change, which is expected to expedite the licensure process for the pandemic vaccine.
"Filing this application is consistent with our commitment to work collaboratively with public health officials in producing
a vaccine against the influenza A(H1N1) 2009 virus," said Wayne Pisano, President and Chief Executive Officer of
Sanofi Pasteur. "It is essential that we pursue the vaccine licensure pathway made available to us, while at
the same time, continue the important clinical studies of our vaccine." The supplemental
application follows recent recommendations by the FDA to evaluate the influenza A(H1N1) 2009 monovalent
vaccines using the same regulatory process by which it approves new viral strains contained in the annual
seasonal influenza vaccines. Sanofi Pasteur's influenza A(H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccine supplemental application
specifies the evaluation of a non-adjuvanted vaccine.
While these strain
change supplements are not required to be supported by new clinical data, immunogenicity and safety data will
be made available through clinical studies. Sanofi Pasteur will test the immunogenicity and safety of its influenza
A(H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccine through clinical trials in the U.S.,
which began August 6. The planned clinical trials will consist of approximately
2,000 subjects
and will also evaluate the safety and potential benefits of adding an adjuvant to the pandemic vaccine. ..............................

Thanks Mary. I'm more interested in the pandemic vaccine - with the way 2009 H1N1 has taken over as the dominant strain I'm not sure I see a lot of need for a seasonal flu vaccine. Much appreciated.

very welcome...
Keeping this in mind... A major determinant of virus virulence, the expression of a protein called PB1-F2 is absent in the 2009-H1N1 virus , {which was known to cause cell death and was found in viruses responsible for influenza pandemics of 1918-19 (H1N1), 1957 (H2N2), and 1968 (H3N2)) Accounting for the relatively low virulence of the 2009-H1N1 virus.

Of interest is the recent finding that the H1N1 virus currently lacks the protein PB1-F2, which is believed to be an important determinant of virulence and lethality in influenza viruses (Osterhaus, A. and Garau, J., 2009). ............ http://science.thomsonreuters.com/pharma/h1n1/ .............................................................................................................................................. In their commentary in the Aug. 12 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, David M. Morens, M.D., and Jeffery K. Taubenberger, M.D., Ph.D., note that the two other flu pandemics of the 20th century, those of 1957 and 1968, generally showed
no more than a single seasonal recurrence; and in each case, the causative virus did not become significantly
more pathogenic over the early years of its circulation.
The variable track record of past flu pandemics makes predicting the future course of 2009 H1N1 virus, which first
emerged in the Northern Hemisphere in the spring of 2009, difficult. The authors contend that characteristics
of the novel H1N1 virus, such as its modest transmission efficiency, and the possibility that some people have
a degree of pre-existing immunity give cause to hope for a more indolent pandemic course and fewer deaths than in many past pandemics.
Still, the authors urge that the 2009 H1N1 virus continue to be closely tracked and studied as the usual influenza
season in the Northern Hemisphere draws near. Like life, the authors conclude, paraphrasing Danish
philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, "influenza epidemics are lived forward and understood backward." Thus, the
robust, ongoing efforts to meet the return of 2009 H1N1 virus with vaccines and other measures are essential responses to a notoriously unpredictable virus.

H1N1 Update: U.S. Expecting Delay in First Vaccine Doses for Novel H1N1 Influenza
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is expecting to have only 45 million doses of the vaccine against novel H1N1 influenza virus by October 15, far short of its goal of 120 million doses, according to the Associated Press. Various manufacturing snafus have contributed to the delays. The agency still anticipates receiving
its full order - 195 million vaccine doses - by December.

The fact that it does continually , change, mutate, is the very reason the Vaccine Industry finds it so difficult to... they call it matching strains (Microbiologist are rolling on that one.) for the seasonal flu.
Influenza viruses are constantly changing which requires on going collection and characterization of the strains.

Obama urges public to prepare for fall wave of H1N1
...............................................................................
Robert Roos News Editor
Sep 1, 2009
(CIDRAP News) – President Barack Obama warned today that a larger wave of novel H1N1 influenza is likely this fall and called on all Americans to prepare for it.
"I don't want anybody to be alarmed, but I do want everybody to be prepared," Obama said in a Rose Garden statement after a meeting with several cabinet secretaries to discuss the pandemic.
In a reference to past pandemics, he said, "We know that we usually get a second, larger wave of these flu viruses in the fall, and so response plans have been put in place across all levels of government."
Obama said the government is "making steady progress on developing a safe and effective H1N1 flu vaccine, and we expect a flu shot program will begin soon. The program will be completely voluntary, but it will be strongly recommended."
He didn't go into specifics on which groups have priority for vaccination—pregnant women, healthcare and emergency medical services workers, close contacts of babies under 6 months of age, children from 6 months to 4 years old, and older children and adolescents with risk factors for flu complications.
In a separate, brief overview of H1N1 preparedness today, the White House said the vaccination program will be "available to all Americans that wish to participate over a period of time." Federal officials have said they expect the first 45 million doses of vaccine—out of 195 million doses ordered—to become available starting in mid October.
In his statement, Obama went on to appeal to individuals and various groups to participate in preparedness efforts.
"Every American has a role to play in responding to this virus," he said. "We need state and local governments on the front lines to make antiviral medications and vaccines available, and be ready to take whatever steps are necessary to support the healthcare system. We need hospitals and healthcare providers to continue preparing for an increased patient load, and to take steps to protect healthcare workers. We need families and businesses to ensure that they have plans in place if a family member, a child, or a co-worker contracts the flu and needs to stay home."
He also urged people to learn about indiviidual risk factors and to take commonsense precautions: "Stay home if you're sick. Wash your hands frequently. Cover your sneezes with your sleeve, not your hands. And take all the necessary precautions to stay healthy. I know it sounds simple, but it's important and it works.
"Finally, for people who want to learn more about this virus, please go to www.flu.gov, or talk to your doctor."
Obama's statement came 8 days after the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technolgoy (PCAST), in a lengthy report on the government's pandemic preparations, estimated that the novel virus could infect 30% to 50% of the population and cause between 30,000 and 90,000 deaths.
While generally praising the Obama adminsitration's efforts, the advisory group called on the administration to accelerate vaccine development, clarify guidelines for antiviral use, and appoint a White House point person to coordinate the government's response. Obama made no reference to the report in his statement today.
