Well I am unhappy to report some kind of upper respiratory ailment spreading in northern Cali like wildfire. Two weeks ago I did not know anyone sick and now most of the people I know have at least one family member down from it. I have had it for a week and it seems to be letting up a bit finally.

Ditto Upper Respiratory virus in Southern California. My wife and daughters have it. One daughter just flew off to Alaska this morning. I hope she is over it before she goes back to work. Being out in the cold in Alaska with a flu/cold type virus can result in pneumonia.

My daughter is a nurse so understands these things. She has checked with her hospital in Alaska where she works, and while she was down there for the past ten days, the hospital has been swamped with patients, mostly native Americans in far western Alaska. The daughter flies up to Anchorage via commercial jet and then flies across Alaska in a puddle jumper to get to her hospital. Brave girl!

Happy New Year everyone1 We, unfortunately, have had an evil stomach flu going around here in Northern Ca. It went through all four of us in our house. My older son had just gotten his wisdom teeth out the day before and he had it the worst.

Greetings All. We have been experiencing a flu that runs about 2 weeks that includes a lot of breathing, coughing, etc. It swept through my work campus and my office like Grant going thru Richmond. Included a couple days of laryngitis (sp). No real Tx for it, altho there is one homeopathic that worked pretty well. D

Evergreen, sounds like what we had in Denver in the Fall and mid winter. It takes weeks to get over the cough.
We all would love to know the homeopathic that works!! |

The homeopathic is called "Cold Calm" and actually can be purchased at some grocery stores. Sure did the trick. D

If it comes on fast with fever, chills, body aches it is most likely flu. If it is slow coming on it is a cold or sinus infection or bronchitis.
Welcome to the year of FLU starting early! |

Flu activity widespread in Calif.; 5 deaths so far
http://www.kcra.com/news/Flu-activity-widespread-in-Calif-5-deaths-so-far/-/11797728/18181638/-/d5jcvg/-/index.html SACRAMENTO, Calif. —Flu activity is now widespread throughout California, and a new death among people younger than 65 has been reported, bringing this season's death toll to five people, officials said. Flu activity has seen a steep increase in recent weeks and is expected to peak in February, according to Dr. James Watt, chief of the state health department's Division of Communicable Disease Control. California has had fairly mild flu seasons over the past two years. "If you're experiencing any symptoms -- a fever and a sore throat or a cough -- it's really a good idea to stay home," Watt said. To date, the state has recorded deaths in the Sacramento metro area, the Visalia-Porterville metro area and the Inland Empire, along with two deaths in greater Los Angeles. Watts urges vulnerable Californians, including the elderly, pregnant women and children, to get flu shots, and advises everyone to wash their hands frequently and cover coughs. Dr. Gil Chavez, the state epidemiologist, said it is still too early to determine if this season will be worse than average. Chavez said that it might be possible that flu activity is just peaking earlier than usual. Chavez told reporters in a conference call that there have been some "spot shortages" of flu vaccine but said the 18 million doses California had received was a "very adequate" supply. The state's reporting period covers through Jan. 12, and only includes flu death victims younger than 65. I wonder why? hmm, oh this link is from my hometown news, btw. |

I have just recovered from a bad case of pneumonia. Everyone in my house except my 10 year old son caught it. I landed in the hospital and I have never felt so sick. I am finally up and around after 12 days. There were a few things about this that really concern me. First, I am a healthy 44 year old male, work out daily, no history of serious illness and this completely flattened me! Second, while I was in the ER, the nurses kept telling me I was going home even though I was borderline for being admitted because there was no bed space. This is not even flu season and the hospital is over capacity...what is going to happen in a pandemic? Our many concerns about hospital space and respirators are very well placed. Time to get my stock of antibiotics up to date...prep on!
