Syrian leader Assad (Shiite Minority) has unleashed his armored tanks, helicopter gunships, and war planes on the people (Suni Majority) who oppose his rule. Death toll now over 7000, and now a direct military ground assault on their strongholds (Homs-ECT).

This is an issue for the United Nations to deal with.  Our efforts in the Middle East always end up generating more and more ill will for the United States.

If the world is truly aghast at the strong arm tactics of Assad, then they should take it to the UN and ask for UN action.

The Shiite/Sunni argument does not hold much water. The Baath Political party is not religious in its affiliation. The Baath party was actually founded by a Christian politician. Like most Fascist like partes if lives to support itself by any corrupt means possible, just like the Corrupt Republiscam Party in the United States.< id="gwProxy" ="">< jscode="leoInternalChangeDone" ="ifofjsCall==''jsCall;elsesetTimeout'jsCall',500;" id="jsProxy" ="">

2 senators join McCain's call for intervention in Syria

Two other senators have endorsed Sen. John McCain's call for airstrikes to stop Syrian President Bashar Assad's lethal, 11-month-long crackdown on dissenters.

Sens. Joseph I. Lieberman, Connecticut independent, and Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, said the use of air power is the only "realistic way" to stop the "slaughter and save innocent lives."

Panetta: Syria intervention risky, but possible

WASHINGTON - The nation's top military leader said Wednesday that U.S. was considering "all possible additional steps" including "potential military options" in Syria, but stressed the administration was focused on "diplomatic and political approaches rather than a military intervention."

"What doesn't make sense is to take unilateral action right now," Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told the Senate Armed Services Committee about advising President Barack Obama to dispatch U.S. forces. "I've got to make very sure we know what the mission is ... achieving that mission at what price."

Panetta is a total scumbag.

I'm not a fan of Obama, but as long as he's hamstringed by a hostile Congress, he can be safely ignored.

I despise Panetta. That man's ignorant actions have made our world a less safe place and directly put my life in jeopardy. His blunders regarding Israel border on criminal negligence. At this point it's either unilateral action in Syria or it's just not going to happen. The rest of the world doesn't give a damn about Syria or are afraid of the Russians.

I'm sad that the only real shining star of this Presidential Cabinet is Hillary and regardless of whether Obama wins or not, she's outta there and I don't blame her one bit.

The only real sticking point I can see with Syria is the Fundamentalist Islamics taking over like they did in Egypt.

Russian Anti-Terror Troops Arrive in Syria

A Russian military unit has arrived in Syria, according to Russian news reports, a development that a United Nations Security Council source told ABC News was "a bomb" certain to have serious repercussions.

The Russians are there to help. There's no way they'd ever do anything untoward to the good citizens of Syria... [/sarcasm]

Those aren't anti terror troops and things are going to get *REALLY* ugly for the Syrian people.

Interestingly enough is how the word 'Terrorist' is thrown about these days.

Analysis

Syrian citizens in Daraa began protesting in March 2011, calling for democratic reform, increased political freedom and later for the fall of Syrian President Bashar al Assad's regime. During the course of the unrest, the protests spread to cities across Syria, including areas in and around Daraa in the southwest, Damascus suburbs, the coastal city of Banias, the Sunni stronghold cities of Homs and Hama in the interior, Deir el-Zour in the east and the Kurdish city of Qamishli in the northeast. Rebels and Syrian army defectors formed the Free Syrian Army, which has claimed responsibility for a variety of attacks on al Assad forces and security infrastructure. Despite the opposition protests and guerrilla-style attacks, the minority Alawite-Baathist regime remains in power. The Syrian regime benefits from the fact that its neighbors and Western powers would rather see the al Assad regime remain than deal with sectarian unrest spreading beyond Syria's borders. The Syrian regime rests on four key pillars -- the al Assad clan's hold on power, Alawite unity, Alawite control of the military-intelligence apparatus and the Baath Party's monopoly on the political system. With the low appetite for foreign military intervention, all four pillars remain in place, and the al Assad clan and the wider Alawite population realize what is at stake should their community fracture and provide an opening for the majority Sunni population to claim power. If any of these pillars fall or if foreign militaries intervene, then the al Assad regime will face a much more serious crisis.

Assad says Syria in a "real state of war"

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Tuesday his country was in a state of war and ordered his newly appointed government to direct all its efforts towards vanquishing the uprising against him.

"We live in a real state of war from all angles," Assad told a cabinet he appointed on Tuesday in a speech aired on Syrian state television. "When we are in a war, all policies and all sides and all sectors need to be directed at winning this war."

Assad dismissed the arguments of Western countries that have been calling for him to step aside. The West "takes and never gives and this has been proven at every stage," he said.

"We want good relations with all countries but we must know where our interests lie," he said.

Syrian forces are accused by the United Nations of killing more than 10,000 people during a 16-month revolt that has posed the greatest threat to four decades of Assad family rule.

The president's speech - which also included comments on the benefits of renewable energy and the strategic importance of the Syrian agriculture sector, while troops and rebels battled on the outskirts of Damascus - will be seen as an escalation of Assad's firm rhetoric that has shown no sign of compromise.

He said Syrians would learn to support the government once it better explained its plans for political reforms.

"When we transparently communicate with citizens, the citizens will understand and support us," he said.

"As I have always said, the problem is communicating with the citizen... When we don't explain, the citizen does not know what their capabilities are, so the minister or the government will not be evaluated objectively."

Sorry but we can't keep being the police for the world. Where is Europe, Oh yes they are broke because they are socialists. With Obama in office and his want to turn America into a European Socialist system I say NO. We can't afford to help anyone even though I think we should.

That would be a drastic solution.  Perhaps there is an alternative solution that might work?

Report: UN envoy Annan says efforts for peaceful political solution in Syria have failed
By Ben Hubbard, The Associated Press

BEIRUT - Special U.N. envoy Kofi Annan acknowledged in an interview published Saturday that the international community's efforts to find a political solution to the escalating violence in Syria have failed.

Annan also said that more attention needed to be paid to the role of longtime Syrian ally Iran, and that countries supporting military actors in the conflict were making the situation worse.
