I was looking at the Drudge Report and came across this:
http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-sci-solar-storms-20120505,0,6214500.story?page=2

It is about solar storms this expert says we will get a big one. Well there goes the grid. Gee, I almost would love for my kid to do without texting, and video games! Maybe we could get families to talk again.

Flumom,
I've been watching solar flare activity and reading expert assessments since we had that threat in March, and yes it is scary. All the experts agree there is about a 12% chance of this happening and knocking out large sections of the power grid in the next 10 years. For the most part, if you've prepped for flu, you've prepped for lack of power. The only difference would be that you are supposed to protect electronics like a hand crank radio, etc. with a faraday cage. There are tons of places that explain how to make a faraday cage, but basically it is a sealed metal box with something inside to insulate against electrical current. If you google solar flares, you'll see some pretty interesting information on this. I'm personally taking it very seriously, but as you already know, I'm a "crazy prepper"!!!

On that Preppers Program I saw a guy just put his radios and stuff in boxes and the boxes in a trash can with the lid on. He tested it with a battery and it seemed to work.

Any of you smart people out there will a trash can work?

I seem to remember someone saying that placing a radio inside an old microwave oven would keep it safe.
Is this true?
I have 2 old ovens I could use if it would protect them.

I have read elsewhere that a microwave WILL NOT work. Flumom, I've used styrofoam as an insulator.

CNN - "Monster sunspot spitting out flares"
[link to lightyears.blogs.cnn.com]

Researchers at NASA’s Solar Dynamics Laboratory called this new region a “monster sunspot.” This region, labeled AR 1476, is gigantic in terms of sunspot regions: It measures about 60,000 miles across.

Since the sun takes 26 days to make one full revolution at the equator, the monster sunspot region will continue to be a threat to Earth for at least the next 13 days.

Thank you DannyKelly those are very plain instructions.

Now...LOL, if I put my radio in this lined cage what radio station will be on the air? Do the radio stations have all their equipment in faraday cages? I bet not!
