LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico veterinarians have been urged to report any confirmed cases of bird flu to the state Department of Health.

The request came Sunday from Paul Ettestad, who is state public health veterinarian at the department.  He spoke during a meeting of the New Mexico Veterinary Medical Association in Las Cruces.

Bird flu has spread from Asia throughout Europe and Africa, but it hasn’t yet reached the United States.

Experts fear the H5N1 bird flu virus could mutate into a strain easily passed among humans and potentially spark a global pandemic.

The virus has killed at least 114 people worldwide.  Most human cases have been linked to contact with infected birds.
