It's a new week and I'm a  bit concern with what is happening in Indonesia.  Im stepping up my efforts, although money is really tight with us having to put away money for gas prices.

What have you prepared today?

I have been browsing http://www.nitro-pak.com/
I have about $250 I would like to spend on some more freeze dried #10 cans. Also just ordered a Petzel LED headlight.
You give peace a chance, I'll cover you in case it doesn't work out.

Found and bought for $10 a 55 gallon food-grade water drum from a local hot sauce manufacturer. It had been filled with apple cider vinegar so it rinsed out well.

SLady: Just got my pressure cooker/canner yesterday! Can't wait to try it.  Is canning the meats really as easy as it seems in the book? I just got some ground beef to give it a go for my first try. (Figured it was cheaper than the other cuts of meat, first!)-k

hi to all,  i brought 2 -35 gallon trash cans  with the #2 in a triangle, which means food grade, and the parts to make rainbarrels, for water collection for the garden. my sister was with me at home depot, we both thought it was kinda sad, that we new more about plumbing than the guy/employee trying to help us.of course he never heard of rain water collection. this is a test  try and if they work ok , will do six more barrels  we also went walmarts and brought the last two combo camp lights , with the solar panel    roxy

Went grocery shopping and got more sale items ... using my excel list and trying to fill the holes, while still taking advantage of sale items.  Looking at my 'bunker' (son's name for room) getting more & more groceries, it felt good to  know I'm giving it my best for caring for my family.  Got my canner so now will concentrate on meats, fruits & soup type items.  Also picked up more buckets at local baker.  Going to try and sneak throug an order for the Berkley filter to make the water purifier on another thread.  LOVE that idea!  I don't ever want to be so unprepared for the potential of an emergency again!  So much to do ... [sigh]-k

I bought a breadmaker and made my first loaf of bread. It seemed pretty idiot-proof.

The only freezer space I have is in my refrigerator so I'll focus on freezing foods such as chicken breasts, fish, ground beef and vegetables which are very compact. If I go into isolation and my freezer compartment starts to empty as I use up food, I then can fill the empty freezer space with bread I've baked myself.

Readymom, you get that Mother's day canner? We have canned ground beef in the large mouth jars by making patties (burgers) and cooking  on low heat before putting in the jars. You can do the same with breakfast sausage as well.

Yep ... Mother's Day canner came 'Day After Mothers Day'!  The way I understand the directions for the meat is you basically just sear the meat ... don't fully cook it, well done, right?  And then proceed with the directions in the book on pressure canning in the cooker. So, same for the sausage? (which I could not find anything on, by the way!  And ... I bought a book by Ball @ the bookstore .... cause I couldn't find it at Walmart ... and paid $20 for it!  Obviously NOT the $6 one mentioned on the other thread! Confused

Today I bought more cereal, toilet paper and paper towels. They were out of the baked beans I like. I'm feeling pretty good. I don't have a 6 months suppy of food, maybe a month or 2, but if this really happens, I have a last minute list of things I need.   ( These are things that I don't normally use, but would if we were isolated.)

Peaches are begging to rippen on tree, canned 5 quarts this morning. Planning on putting up the same amount each day for the next several days.

RM, the book we learned with says to cook all meat to medium then cover w/ broth. We fried both the ground beef and sausage patties on low/medium heat. Also drain and pat w/ a paper towel to remove as much grease as possible. Can in quart jars and the last patty should be 2 inches below the top of jar and cover w/broth 1 inch from top of jar. Meat absorbs more of the broth during canning than veggies/chicken and requires more space.  The best book we have found is "Stocking Up".

Good Luck!

I went through my inventory. It looks like we have enough for 3 meals a day for 2 months. I want 6 months if I can swing it.

I canned rhubarb and strawberry rhubarb jam.
Purchsed more food and beverages, another 8 pk of Boost, books, puzzle books, soap, tooth brushes, coleman fuel, batteries, a big box of Snickers to put in the freezer, and cough drops.

I also got my daughter in for her pneumovax (sp?) today. Hubby got his last week. 2 down, 7 to go!

got my Yukon gold potatoes started.  Going to grow them in huge black plastic, (construction grade) bags.  Saw it on TV.  Better looking than old tires sitting in your yard.  Gonna do 2 bags of them.  Will get tomato plants started tomorrow, in big pots, on the deck.

Still broke so I am gardening . and sorting my food.
Money should be back to normal in a few weeks so Im not on pity mode but it does frustrate me not to shop. I should start freezing the rice and putting it into small serving bags.

Thank you for that suggestion I forget the oringinal sourse.

I will clean rince my empty pop bottles in beach and water and rinse dry

I gotta admit with whats happening in Indonesia, I have gotten on the ball more too. Its just that a person has moments of over whelming feelings, its like YES I started, but what should I buy next with the little money I have. Its almost like you don't know which direction to go in, when buying items. Sometimes I want to scream, thinking am I gonna have enough time. There is 5 of us. Thats alot of meals. My question is, all this BF is happening out of the US, what if it gets to the point they shut things off completely from coming in? Even without the BF here we will feel the affects if that should happen. I guess we will just do what we can. :)
