I currently have 60 cases of water, at 6 gallons a case that is 360 gallons.  my goal is 100 cases or 600 gallons.  They are in individual gallon jugs that have a best by date of April 2008.  Once I get where I want to be I will start using and rotating.  (Also have a pair of above ground pools for my garage that will hold about 2000 gallons each for a total of 4000 pool water and 600 drinking with the TSHTF.

Storing water is a problem I also have. But so far, I have:
                *135 individual gallons in3/case
                *Bakery buckets I've collected for 60 gal (aprox +/- gal) (I figured it's easier to stack empty buckets, than to find space for all the full gallons
                *(1) 18'x8' kiddie pool that will hold 453 gallons. (I was thinking we could put it out on our back deck ... I was thinking of putting our round patio table actully IN the pool! Put each let of the table in plastic, then set the table in the pool then cover the whole get-up with a tarp ... it'll look just like we just covered the table when not using! And the table legs won't take up any water space!
                 *We would also have access to a fresh water spring to refill what buckets/gallons get empty that is just about a mile away. That water will be filtered w/ our home-made bucket filter - design courtsey of gilmor.-k

Tonight at Walmart was the first time I have seen anyone that even looks like they are prepping.  will wonders never cease.  The lady had 4 24 packs of tp, all the pouch tuna they had and lots of other fast casserole things.  I also saw spam in her cart.

I spent about an hour reorganizing my birdflu room (that's what we call it).  I put together a 4-shelf plastic shelving thing that is about 4 feet tall and 14 inches deep, 2 1/2 feet wide. 
 
I went last night to Wal-mart and spent $350 on canned fruit, diapers, toilet paper, baby wipes, crisco, sugar, salt, non-latex gloves, and a few other things.  I was interested to find that Walmart was out of n95 masks, although I'm not sure what I expected.  I need to get online and order some soon.  I know my stubborn husband will insist on going to work, long after it is no longer advisable.
 
I was so pleased...for Mother's Day my husband got me a 2-burner fuel stove and can of fuel.  It's the first indication that he might actually see something important in all my preps.  He could have gotten me flowers, but he got me a little stove.  How sweet!  :)  I'm seriously happy about this...amazing what a boost it is when someone supports you.
 
I am interested in learning about the rainwater storage thingie with the #2 trash cans.  Can someone tell me where it is posted?  On this site, I assume?
 
I want to store more water...I am sorely lacking in this area...I think I have somewhere around 20 gallons...I know...pathetic.  I have no idea where to put it!  Right now, it is lining my diningroom wall...needing a home.  My birdflu room is not large enough.  I was thinking about asking my husband to get one of those plastic (rubbermaid-type) mini-houses that are around 4 feet by 6 feet for our back patio...but that wouldn't hold much.  I'm at a loss...attic?  Would it go bad or get too hot in the summer (I live near Atlanta)?
 
Help anyone?

 Today I cleaned out a closet to store more stuff.  I also cleaned bookshelves to make room for all of my survival books.

Thanks, texasgirl...I'll check it out.  I know that they had a really good deal at survivetheflu.com about 2 months ago.  I have 2 boxes, but not nearly enough.

2 in the triangle does NOT mean "food grade".  It means the plastic is HDPE.

We have cleaned out our garage and are putting in lots of shelves. I ordered those large zepherelys bottles, 7 a month a 2 cases of water per month delivered.. We are stashing cash. We are putting a six foot fence around the perimeter of our 1 acre land/house. I have convinced my husband to prep and now we are trying to get the space to store it.

Just slightly off-topic, but on the subject of oil lanterns mentioned above, I'd really recommend going with kerosene lanterns instead of parrafin based oil, because kero is about $3/gallon at the pump and the oil is about $5/quart.  Or get an LED lantern, the ones with D-cell batteries are rated for around 400 hours and they can't start a fire if they get tipped over.

As for what I've done this week, not much.  Couple cans of Campbell's Chunky something-or-other, and asked a local co-op to send me prices on bulk purchases of grains and beans.  Pretty weak.

mercutioAtc , thanks for the post ,went to the web site you posted  found  this type2 high  density polyethylene  ....milk ,detergent, oil bottles toys and plastic bags ...isn;t milk containers food grade?, and  kids put toys in their mouth, I did  research on this  on water saving web sites . but  will check again , but not tonight its 1:30 in CT. and i just worked 9 1/2 hours, thanks for the help, roxy

While it's true that #2 (HDPE) plastic is one of the substances used to make food-grade plastic containers, not ALL #2 containers are food grade.

 mercutioatc,  i went to your web sites, and the only thing they stated was don't use garbage cans..didn't say why, the only thing they were saying was use white or clear buckets,because of the die in plastic. the 55 gallon barrels sold for this purpose at 65$ each are in blue,black,grey,that I can remember,probably because they are outside and can fade in the sunlight.  i checked the bottoms of the garbage cans  when i brought them, some had no recycle grade , some had a 4 , these are marked 2, . i haven't made them yet into water savers, my son does'n t like the valve i brought. i will search for the site i found this info on and get back to you  . thanks for the info I,trying to save money on the water bill for the garden  roxy

to tlc peach--- Now plant blackberrries all around that fence. And when you plant use the fertilizer pellets for that purpose.  As they grow weave them in the fence.  10 times better than a fence alone.

I DID IT AGAIN! I go to the store for a gallon of milk. I repeat to myself, a gallon of milk. Just a gallon of milk. And then it's, another jar of Skippy would be usefull. Oh, and just a couple boxes of pasta, etc, etc. Before I know it, I am in the parking lot FILLING the back of my van AGAIN.
 
I get home and start carrying it into the house. My DH smiles at me and my kids say, "You just can't help it can you Mom?"
 
I just look and them and say, "Ya, well someday you will be thankfull for my OCD."
 
I think I'm out of milk again.......

Hi Donna--I saw a program on the gardening channel about growing potatoes in big plastic bags.  I went to the hardware store and asked for commercial grade big plastic bags.  They come in a box just like the regular plastic trash bags you buy in the store.  The guy at the hardware store said they are sometimes hard to find, as all the construction guys buy them for their trash at their work sites.  Anyway, cut holes for drainage in the bottom, roll them down and plant your seed potatoes (cut into chunks with 1-2 eyes per chunk), and leave the chunks on a plate in your house where it is dry for several days, to harden them off.  Program said to dunk them in sulfur, but I didn't buy any of that.  The lady at the garden store where I got my Yukon golds said they already had been dunked in sulfur, to prevent fungus.  Plant them at bottom of bag, under potting soil or straw.  Let the leaves come up, so they can have some sunshine.  When a little leggy, cover the lower 3/4 with more soil or straw, keeping some leaves to catch the sun.  They just keep climbing up the sack, and you can unroll it to match their vertical growth.  Water as usual.  Yukon golds can be harvested in about 1 1/2 month (according to the garden lady).  ie, they are fast.  One of these bags is huge and will harvest huge amounts of potatoes.  I am only go to do one bag, and since this is the first time for me, I will see how it goes.  The garden lady uses straw, but I bought several sacks of regular potting soil.  Alot of people grow potatoes in old tires.  They like the heat they generate.  This is the same principle.  My husband and I estimated that one of these big bags would grow 20 pounds or more of potatoes.  Let me know if you try it.  It will be so nice to have fresh potatoes when we get self-quarantined.    pugmom
