canned 20 quarts of peaches this week
had alot left over and did not have time to put up so washed and dried them and placed in gallon freezer bags. Have about 8 gallons of whole peaches in my freezer. Will take some out this weekend and see if they are good to make pies with.
bought additional items for food storage
25# flour
6# Crisco
20 rolls paper towels
1# yeast
Hamburger meat is on sale for $.99/lb bought 20#, plan on going back and buying 40# more, will have to can as I buy, freezer space is at a premium.
Also bought a three burner cooker at Lowes that comes with a grill that sits over two of the burners, it also has a thermostat so could use for baking. Cost of grill $199. I ordered a cast iron griddle that also sits over two of the burners $69 with 10% discount. We are camped at the lake and have been using it to cook all our meals on WORKS GREAT. I also used the burners to can my peaches, no complaints. the burners are 30,000 BTU each. If someone is looking for an alternate cooking source this one is working out very good for use.
Also found a 49# propane tank at garage sale thats looks brand new with propane included for $50.
Was given 10 boxes of canning jars.
Bought a Excalibur dehydrator about six weeks ago, finally had time to try it out. Everyone loves the banana chips, they are eating them almost as fast as we can dry them. Lucked up of 36# of bananas for $4 on the marked down table. Planning on trying more fruits and veggies.
Also got two prescriptions of Tamiflu this week. All the Pharmacies said that they had sent there supply back to the distributor, so they had to order it for us. Received it overnight.

Arklatex,
You have been so busy I don't know how you do it. It would have taken me months to do what you've done in a few days! Will you can up some of that energy for me? I'll pay cash!

More, always more. I had about 4 months worth of stuff but:
Cases of corned beef
cases of tuna
20 lbs dried beans
10 lbs rice
cases 24 ct. VanCamps P&B's
30 lbs Velveeta Cheese ( you don't have to refrigerate it, just keep it cool)
more charcoal
more cat litter
cases canned fruit ( the 29 oz ones)
three cases canned vegetables
10 lbs sugar
25 lbs flour
10 lbs table salt
more spices, yeast, cooking oil, shortening, picante sauce,
copious amounts of coffee, vodka, and pouch tobacco for trade goods
lamp oil, wicks, a third 55 gallon plastic drum for water, garden seed stock for next spring....
Gave $100.00 to a woman who doesn't have the means to prep for herself and arranged for another serious an experienced prepper to make sure she got "bang for the buck" when she went shopping for stuff.
Stopped by the "Bullet Shack". Again.
Stopped by the Mil-Surplus and bought three more filters for my NBC.
I bought so much stuff yesterday I don't remember it all.
I'm going to have a "moving sale" over the weekend, and spend all of that next. Didn't want to move all the stuff to Utah this fall anyway, so I figure I'll just get it down to "prized possessions" and the bare minimum. Minimum might be better considering, you know? I could the extra room now too, no doubt about that.
I am very thankful for the fact that all the defense/survival/security gear I spent over $2,500.00 on a few years back was pretty much still good to go.

DAX - I just read your list and was very touched by your generosity to someone who lacked the funds to prep.
Not really sure what I want to say except that I think that was a wonderful thing to do. ==================== I just received: 2 of the 3 vintage Saltine tins I bought. The order of storage foods placed earlier this month. 25# bag of Poor Mans Blend ground coffee for $75 and free shipping. Whole bean costs even less, but I'm lazy and can't count on electricity to operate the Vita-Mix. Smells heavenly. Not sure how many half gallon jars it will fill - Foodsaver time. |

I directed my husband to Honeyville Grains. He ordered some things. He also ordered a water filter from Cheaper Than Dirt. Funny he was so sure this BF wasn't going to be too much. Live and learn I suppose.

Been reading this forum for quite some time now and finally joined. I have a good start on prepping. Just read your post about buying 30# of velvetta. Would you please tell me how you store that much velvetta? When I look at the expire date at the store, it is only good for about 3 months. I would really like to store some cheese and am having trouble finding one that will last. I did go to the Honeyville Grain site and ordered powdered eggs this week so that made me feel more secure. Thanks for the great job all of you are doing.

anon 54, how does your hubby like the filter. We have 2 ponds so would be nice to get a nice filter that can filter a lot of water if we need to. Thanks

I've been buying regular cheese when it's on sale. My sister has always frozen cheese and says it's fine. Not sure how long it will keep frozen, but I left it in the orignal sealed package and put it in the freezer. Figure we should have electricity for at least a month once TSHTF. So I'll use the cheese up the first month and do without after that.

I picked up some velveeta too, but not that much. I picked up several of the tiny 1/2# boxes and vacuum sealed them in bags for use if the power is out. I also have several of the larger blocks that I hope to can as cheese sauce, although I still haven't done that. I think Velveeta will keep for a long time at room temperature and only needs refrigeration once it's opened. There's a recipe on the forum and on the web for sealing the box in wax and allegedly it will keep for several years on a shelf. |

Thanks much OKnut. I have read lots of your posts and they are always very helpful. I have a Food Saver so will use that. Speaking of Bird Flu. There is a report of abc news right now.

I always freeze cheese. I have used it anywhere from 6-9 months later with no problem. Hard cheeses lose some texture, but the taste is the same!

Raptureready,
That's not the route that I took - I opted for a non-electric water distiller. But, in other threads, I believe in the Preparedness area, there are directions for building your own by purchasing only the filters and saving a lot of money. |

When I've looked at the expiry date of hard cheeses in the supermarket, the date is usually 5 months away. It would seem to me better to just store the sealed packages in the fridge rather than place in the freezer where the texture will be destroyed.

Besides adding some more food items, I purchased a Coleman solar shower, which looks like it will work well. We have well water, so water won't be the issue, heating it for cleaning will be if the hot water tank is out. So this contraption holds 5 gallons in a black plastic bag, you lay it in the sun for several hours, then hang it in your shower and use the attached hose to take your shower! Pretty nifty, and only $5 at Target.
I also bought an old-school coffee perculator for the stove top since the electric coffee maker will be of no use.

I saw that shower tonight! It was at Dicks Sporting goods for $8.99! I got one at Walmart and I was going to come home and see how much water it held and if it wasn't 5gal, I was going to take it back and get that one ... but now I'll go to Target, instead! Thanks! -k
