Good Morning~ Does anyone know how long rice and beans (uncooked, of course..:) will store if kept in a plastic or glass container in a cool, dry place?
I have ordered in a 50# bag of rice, and a 50# bag of beans at our local natural foods store. I want to prepare the "right" type of storage container, and location...prior to it's arrival.

Here's what I have in my file, copied from this site:
*Beans and rice. Freeze each bag for 3 days before you store it - it kills the eggs of the bugs that might otherwise hatch in it in storage. And get some containers with close fitting lids that would keep out the mice and damp.
*I FREEZE ALL DRIED GOODS FOR 2 WEEKS BEFORE STORING.....this get all the small larva out especially flour... *I have been bagging up rice, beans and pasta. I put quite a bit of dry products in glass jars.
* Pasta stores a LONG time. Years. Just store everything in a cool, dark, dry place. |

I have rice, beans, wheat, etc, that I packed in plastic buckets around 15 years ago. I put in about 2 inches of product then put in a chunck of dry ice (about the size of a ping pong ball) then filled the buckets. I let the buckets sit over night, pushed down any lids that had "popped" then sealed the lid to the bucket with duct tape or regular plastic box tape.
Every once in a while I try a bucket to see how good the stuff is, and even the Oatmeal has been satisfactory. Anything with a high oil content, like Soy Beans, or is not in its "whole" form, like oatmeal, will go bad first.
Some Pasta that I stored (elbo mac) is a bit "chewy" now, but is still quite edible.

Just ordered 25# of Poor Mans Blend ground coffee for $75 and free shipping. It's very good coffee that I normally purchase in 5# bags. I'll just vacuum seal it in half gallon jars for later.
The thought of possibly running out of coffee to supplement our beans and rice was frightening.

Sorted the water situation this week, now storing 2000 litres ~ 500 gallons (for 4) potable water, collecting rain water for flushing etc. We've been told this week that there will be a water shortage this summer, and there may even be street stand pipes in use in some counties for people to have to cart buckets of water to their homes! (UK - feels almost 3rd world)
Food for 3 months so far (but nappies only for 2), 6 months here I come. Had a power cut this week for 5 hours, house alarms in the neighbourhood all started sounding, the house felt really cold and it was so strange not being able to do so many things we all take for granted. No music, no coffee, no washing machine going, no 'Avianflutalk'!!!! (I think that was the worse - not knowing what was happening in Indonesia) Krystal |

I broke down and used the credit cards. I bought solar lights set of four and cast iron pan. I plan to rely on solar for most of my needs . There are solar radio and crank radios.
I am going to try them out tonight to see how much light they give out. I will post whether I like them tommorow or the day after its a dark day today . $60.00 for set of four . Great cheap option for children rooms . I wouldnt want to use candles . I also have battery lights from the dollar store for emergency to light the way to the generator or in case my son is home alone when a power outage occurs |

Hi Texasgirl, we do have a Hobby Lobby. I went there also and bought them out. I' think i'm going to stop buying oil now, before i get a name something like the insane oil lady. Yesterday canned 10# chicken breasts. Got 8 pints of chicken and 6 qts of great soup. Also 4 qts just plain broth. I plan on buying 10# of meat every week when the loss leader prices hit a certain store in our area. They offer 10# units of specific meat at a great price.
Question :How do you cut a post out with the white lines around it...
Second question: What is this 10# chicken 10# I plan on buying 10# of meat . It's the number 10# Im confused about ....What does that mean...

Well, the plan for today was simply to buy half n half. That's it...then I got online this am. Mistake! Or...maybe not. Either way filled the cart to the top and stopped when it was full - AGAIN
One item I got was new to me. It is called Emotrol sp? It is an anti-nausea medicine I found out about from Flylady. My father got very ill with all the yucky symptoms of gastro/stomach flu so got him some. This stuff really works!!! He swears by it. Expensive, but got the generic for half the cost and it worked.

I had a rude awakening the other day at our local heb. All the stores in my area cut the front of cases of food off. You cant use them to carry the case out, everything would fall out the end. I asked them about this they said it is easier to stock shelves this way. They cut the front and then peel the plastic off. Great time saver for them but heck for you if you want to buy the entire case. Anyway, here is my rude awakening. I went to the back of heb by the store room and asked for something in a case. Guess what, nothing back there. The truck was there delivering and they said they would look for it as they unloaded truck. I always thought something was in back but I now know this is not true. What is on the shelf is all they have. Guess I was naive to all this. |

Texasgirl - it's scary or is it scarey? Can't spell.
I don't know when they stopped having extra stuff in back but it seems that nobody does anymore. What you see on the shelves is it - period. That's why I want to add more rice and beans to my stash, just in case. Maybe more flour too. Even once things are being transported, there will be such a mess and so many people scrambling for things that I'd rather have the option of waiting awhile. |

Could not agree with you more. You would think that with all the natural disasters that we face, this system would be better evaluated but oh well. I just know that I have to step it up just a bit.

Went to the store and found Angus Beef cubes on sale, so bought about 4 lbs, which was still $12. I'm going to do the same ... buy some every week. I canned my first ground beef, yesterday and want to try this next. I had a question above about the ground beef ... I covered it with boiling water, after I drained it for the processing and it still has a layer of fat that is cooled on the top ... is that oke? Didn't see anything in my books on that happening and I got nervous. I was hoping for someone to let me know, before I try my hand at this next batch of cubes. I'm really enjoying knowing we can have decent meat in our meals with the canning option! I never would have tried it without coming to this site!! THANK YOU!!!!!

Not sure about the fat layer. Call your local agricultural extension service and ask. If they do not have a food preparation person try the one in a county next to the one you live in.

Can you tell me how you are storing 500 gallons of water?...checked my supply tonight and I only have 70 gallons.
I went to the store today and bought lamp oil, lamps,wics etc. I haven't noticed anyone else buying ANTHING...am I the only person worried here????? I took inventory and added even MORE to my list......I just sometimes think I am going overboard on all of this.
