Two People with Bird Flu Symptoms in Bulgaria's Varna -

14 February 2006, Tuesday.
Sofia News Agency

Two people in Bulgaria's Black Sea city Varna have been subjected to
medical tests over fears of bird flu infection, local Darik radio reported.

One of the men is a veterinary inspector from Shabla, who was in direct
contact with one of the swans found dead in the Durankulak lake. The
swan was infected with the deadly H5N1 virus.

The second person was reported to be a veterinary inspector from Varna,
who was also in direct contact with a H5N1-infected swan that was found
near Dalgopol, Varna.

This is the type of warning sign that is not good.   We need to watch for the "workers" themselves getting sick.  When this happens, it might not be good.

Must be pretty virulant to get vets. surely they would take precautions but this is Africa we're talking about.
Speculation is the only tool we have with a threat that can circle the globe in 30 days. Test results&news is slow.Factor in human conditions,politics, money&bingo!The truth!Facts come after the fact.

It's hard to believe that he got infected with all of the protective wear that you see them wearing.   This situation seems to change by the hour.

There is no protection that you can wear to protect you from the flu, let alone a superflu.  When h5n1 goes h2h, these guys are all going to be in serious trouble - when it erupts.  The superflu will probably take out the "frontline" quite easily.  This is probably why the U.N health inspectors are heading out there. 

The dead birds (h5n1) covers 3 continents in less than 30 days.  These guys need to take cover now.

Albert,

The personal protective equipment (PPE) you see in these rural news stories is not up to spec. The H5N1 virus as well as other viruses and bacteria can be kept off of, and out of you with single-use quality N95/N100 masks/respirators, goggles, Tyvek coveralls, nitrile gloves and latex boot covers. Hospitals have been treating contageous people for years using "isolation" and "reverse islation" techniques with very little contamination to themselves.

This level of PPE may become necessary if you'll be around H5N1 dead birds and/or flu symptomatic people. If the trend continues, both senarios may become all to real for many of us.

Being on this forum, monitoring the news and seeing www.pandemicflu.gov are about the best you can do to make informed decisions.

I hope we never hear, "Officer, that man sneezed on me!"

Protective clothing works, they proved it in Hong Kong with SARS, but it is
contingent on doing all the right things. Search for my SARS posting and
N95 masks. It's revealing and the basis for my game plan to protect my
family, if it comes to that. I left some N95's with friends this weekend.
They said they already had some. I checked, they were N95's rated for
dust & workshops, not for viral protection. I guess the same happens in
the third world. I called to order some more from a pharmacy locally,
they wanted to give me non-surgical N95's.

I just found a dead bird outside my home yesterday. The local public
health officials are not interested in my conerns, which I acknowledge
may be wrong, but I don't have a crystal ball. I would rather put my faith
in a Polymerase Chain Reaction analysis in lab, than a virtual necropsy
over the phone by a bored civil servant.

Stay out of trouble, buy your significant other some flowers & chocolates
today. (Thanks again Nikita)
