I have been told that vinyl gloves should not be used in first aid for protection as they are permeable to blood-borne viruses and prone to leakage or splitting. ? Any experience of these?

Hi,
You are correct. Vinyl gloves are not suitable as a barrier to infection. Nitrile gloves are the safest bet.
