No big deal, everyone in this part of the world (Illinois) preps for the New Madrid fault on a regular basis.  It's not a matter of if, but when.

Walmart is located in Arkansas and it's not surprising that they are aware of and prepare for an earthquake in their home state. I'm sure companies based in California do the same!

We do the Great California Shakeout every year I think in November. Most colleges and universities participate. We had an air raid sounding siren at my alma mater that reminded me of the Silent Hill franchise.
Be prepared! It may be time....^_^v

My mother and sister and her husband and grown kids all live in St. Louis. NONE of them prep! They think I am a nut. If the New Madrid lets go they are all going to be in a world of hurt. My sister shops everyday for their meals not much in the cupboard.

My mom is not much better but at least the grocery store is across the street from where she lives.

If you look up the New Madrid quake it made the Mississippi flow backwards! It was a bad one.

FluMom- It is estimated that the 1811-1812 earthquakes were felt strongly over 50,000 sq. miles! There were four large quakes over a three month period that ranged from 7.0 to 8.1 in magnitude! They say they were so strong they rang church and school bells up and down the east coast! If a 7.0 hit today Memphis would be mostly destroyed and Little Rock, St Louis and Louisville along with most smaller towns in between would suffer major damage! It would also destroy most of the bridges and pipelines crossing the Mississippi river! There is a 25-40 percent chance that a 6.0 or larger quake will happen in the next 50 years.

Arirish, YEP! My family thinks I am nuts but I have tried to tell them to prep that the govt will not help them in any bad thing that happens.   My family has earthquake insurance and they think they are just fine. My sister is almost 70 so we have only about if we are lucky 20 more years. But her sons are really not too bright they will suffer if the big one hits.

I grew up in an Illinois town on the Mississippi river. When I was young we had an earthquake. I was lying on my bed one weekend afternoon and thought my brother was shaking the bed. I yelled at him to cut it out, but when the shaking didn't stop I got up and he was no where around. I went into the kitchen and the cups that hung on hooks in the cupboard were clanking against each other. It lasted for several minutes.

We never heard of the New Madrid fault line back then and nobody had extra food in preparation for it and I believe that most people still don't.

1968 Illinois earthquake.
The quake struck on Saturday, November 9, 1968 at 11:02 a.m.
The earthquake was felt in 23 states and affected a zone of 580,000 square miles.

This quake registered MM VII on the Mercalli intensity scale.

There are two important figures in earthquakes, the magnitude ie. the richter scale, and, very importantly, the depth of a quake. An 8.1 at 150km depth will be very different to an 8.1 at 5km deep. The first one with be some thing exciting to talk about and the second one will kill lots of people when the buildings they are in collapse.
Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.
