Four confirmed illnesses have been reportedly linked to the West Nile Virus in California.

The cases occurred in Los Angeles, Kern and Riverside counties.

"West Nile virus activity in the state is increasing, so I urge Californians to take every possible precaution to protect against mosquito bites," said Dr. Karen Smith, CDPH director and state public health officer.

As of June 8, the West Nile Virus has been detected in 14 dead birds from seven counties and four mosquito samples from three counties. Those counties were not specified.

The California Department of Public Health recommends the public use insect repellent, wear proper clothing that would cover areas accessible to mosquitos, especially in the early morning and late night hours, and drain all standing water.
