What Scares Me Even More Than Ebola, An ER Doctor Writes http://www.thetrentonline.com/er-doctor-scares-even-ebola-dr-louis-m-profeta/ "But if you ask me if I’m worried about Ebola, if our hospital is ready or if our nurses and staff are up to the challenge, chances are you will probably hear me say this: |

Very good article, thanks! The perspective of the ER Doc carries a lot of weight with me. I'm blown away because $Billions were spent on US hospital preparedness, dating back to post-9/11 bioterrorism warnings and then H5N1 pandemic flu warnings. PPE gear was purchased, trainings were held, seminars attended....I participated in some of this, it was amazing how much work our healthcare infrastructure put into preparation. However, the minute we are presented with a Category A Bioterrorism agent (Ebola virus) from a native vs. manmade source, we all fall apart!! What if Ebola were being disseminated by an adversary? I'm really disappointed in our US healthcare system right now. For all the training they've undergone, it seems to have been forgotten. I guess that is human nature....they just don't take these events (BT, flu etc.) seriously. God help us if Ebola or a nasty pandemic influenza virus takes hold in the USA.

A good practical read. It sounds like it wouldn't take much of a "no show" rate for things to quickly fall apart at a hospital - 20%? 25%? I wonder how feasible the doctor's idea is - for filed-home-visit staff - keep the people out of the hospital. Its an interesting idea, and might be quite doable as part of a hospital's emergency plan.

This is the reason we better be ready to SIP ASAP because our Health Care System is NOT ready for any pandemic.
I hope I am ready but we are never totally ready that is why I am getting PPE just in case I need it. |
