You need to own a shovel. You bury it.

There are different opinions on the details depending on who you ask. The environmentally friendly way is to bury it in small hole 6 or more inches deep. Make sure you bury waste at least 200 feet from any water sources. Place your toilet paper in a plastic bag and put the bag in the garbage can or refuse area.

But then, it may not be practical to bury waste so often if you are secluded in your home. Might not be wise to go outside so much. What is everyone else's opinion and ideas on that?

Of course, the more waste you have to bury, the deeper the hole you should dig.

toilets will still operate if you have an available water source....and if yellow let it mellow and if it is brown flush it down..take a meduim size bucket and pour water down at a smooth pace it will still flush...

You can also save the plastic handle bags and use a bucket and then dispose of it..again with the shovel....I live in the far North of Ontario and we are surronded by lots of woodland....

Truth be told it will be all a lesson as we go along..I am depending on survival skills and education to get me through..also a lot of luck and faith....

Goodness, am I the only redneck on here, that knows what an outhouse is?

Seriously, build an outhouse, dig the hole under it about four feet squaree, and deep as possible, four to six feet works for years.

And remember this, everybody has to use lime after they use the outhouse, it all does stink, mine too.

We need to calm down, and see if it hits, if you here, you may be OK. And it may not matter anyway, just wait and see.

Prepare for the worst, and hope for the best.

I agree with you TNbebo408 - but I live in North Alabama in the middle of no where.  The people in New York City may have trouble digging their hole.  I am glad I don't live in a city - many problems to deal with, sanitation could be significant in the event of any large scale crisis.  In which case moving and living in a tent might be the option I would take.

TNbebo and BamaSteve, you're both right, sanitation in densely populated urban areas is likely to become nightmarish.  It was a huge issue in the SuperDome in NO - people have just forgotten what was once common knowledge and will just go anywhere.  This is going to make disease other than BF a very real health hazard.

I recently acquired a good shovel for this and other BF related needs.

bruss01

I have thought about this problem - from a large city point of view and do not see a good solution for sanitation.  Being isolated or semi isolated during any type of (biological, chemical, thow in nuclear as well type event) would be a positive.  I can see how hard it would be though, to just to up and leave during a crisis event.  Probably would make a good topic, "Should I stay or should I go."

Even where I live I probably will use some type of indoor toliet (bucket and seat or portable RV type with small water tank) and carry to a dump pit.  I have seen this used, the pit is well designed with a hatch to keep out animals.  This gives convienence to the family but not to me probably - as I will be the designated person responsible for dumping.  Of course if the electricity and water are maintained then no problem.

Compost toilets!  It turns it into compost and is either way more easily disposed of or you can user it for your garden!   (:

For the city dwellers, check on porta potties on ebay and rv places. And look up Lehmans hardware they sell compost toilets, but I think they high dollar items.

If you can't afford nothing else, use a five gallon bucket, sprinkle a bit of lime over the poop, and carry it off, when you have to.

Be SURE to find a bucket with a lid. Heck we have a seat bolted on one to take camping. We put a trash bag in it first of course.

Event Horizon:  Hope you're not planning to pick through feces for nutritional bits.  Though flies and maggots may be chuck-ful'a vitamins, I don't plan on looking at my stool all that closely during a pandemic.

Please dont put poo in your veggie garden,it must be composted for a few years first. When you see composted cow poo for sale at the garden stores, in bags, it has been composted for a few years also. (cows eat foods that will compost fast  no dairy or fats) When I compost in my  garden  it sits for 2 years. This is just leaves, twigs, and such.My compost gets very hot in the summer sun. (this kills off germs and fungus) When it rains steam will come off of  it. If you must compost  human poo poo you will also have to add organic materal.(peatmoss, sawdust, animal bedding products being the best) Be very carefull...just think when was the last time you saw human composted poo poo for sale? Never! Yes it can be done but....carefully! Also important is lay of the land. Dont compost where rain runoff will be towards home or garden.LOL poo poo advice.
