Windsor paramedics donned latex suits and face masks Monday to treat a patient who recently returned from Nigeria and is now showing possible symptoms of the Ebola virus.

Once the patient arrived at the Ouellette Avenue campus of Windsor Regional Hospital, he was isolated and testing began to determine if he has Ebola.

“We are investigating a possible case,” said hospital spokesman Ron Foster. “It’s very early stages of testing.”

Paramedics were called Monday to the university area about a person — who recently returned from Nigeria — with various symptoms including a rash and fever. Essex-Windsor EMS Deputy Chief Chris Grant said dispatch asked the caller a number of questions as part of a standard screening process.

“From that screening process they determine what they could be dealing with,” said Grant. “Because of them travelling out of town to areas of concern with the Ebola virus going on, and presenting some of the symptoms, we are treating it as a possible Ebola incident until proven differently.”
