I've been saving web pages to dvd with stuff I think might be useful and will make major efforts to stay on the net and on here as long as possible.  If you have a tenuous connection to the net investing in a DVD writer and some DVDs now might be a good thing.  I'd also invest in a small inverter (400 watts) with battery clips, a long extension cord, and buy a new low power LCD display if possible.

Scooter,

Ever look at Sat Internet?  I have one that I bought to use on my MotorHome and it works great!

Rather than battery backups get a couple of golf cart batteries, a good inverter, about 1kw and a good battery charger, about 40 amps.  These will work far better and cost you a lot less for power delivered.  Add a couple of solar panels and you can stay up for a long time.  PM me if you have questions!

Scooter,

I have sat uplink for my internet connection.  Love it except when it rains.  If it rains hard I loose connection.  There is only one real provider of satallite internet and any of the providers simply sell time.

While I went with Direcway we are billed by Hughes Communication.  My brother just bought his satallite (can't have big sis out do him) and he got his through EBay of all things.  Beat what I paid by a $100.00.

I also maintain an AOL for broadband account that provides 10 hours a month of dial-up.  This way if we have a monsoon I won't be without internet.  It only costs $6.00 a month so it's well worth it.

I had DirecWay for a while and switched to DSL when it was finally available in my area.

I'm not convinced that it will last if TSHTF.  Granted, you might have enough power on your end to run a computer, router, and DW6000/7000 modem, but  even though the satellite will remain operational, the DirecWay Network Operations Center (NOC) may be powerless.

It's not so much the apocalypse... but the credit card bills ;-)

Spoon,

I agree with you 100%.  But with my rural location Sat was my only broadband option to dial-up.
