Hi everyone: I listened to the entire 3 hours of the Florida Pandemic Preparedness summit for the state of Florida. HHS Secritary Michael Levitt also spoke at this summit. I feel, after watching the program that our Governor has a good handle on what needs to be done. I was really impressed that they on numerous occasions advised people that they would be pretty much on there own and needed to prepare for an emergency and would have to have enough food and water, etc. for at least a month or more.

Cisco. Good for you! I wanted to hear it but couldn't. I have a few Q's if you don't mind. What was the panic level of the discussion?. 10 being it's here you gonna die? Did any emergency service folks speak and in your opinion were they prepared with the right questions and answers? Any utility folks? Or Guard? Did the meeting sound to you like a political "look we warned you we've done our job so see ya after it's over? How screwed are we in Fl? |

Do you think Fl got special attention considering who's brother the Gov. is? Or was it just the standard presentation that they are taking around the country to all states?

These summits are being done throughout the US. Phoenix had one awhile
back. If you go to pandemicflu.gov they list what states had a summit,
and which states are coming up.

What was the panic level of the discussion?. 10 being it's here you gonna die? They were stressing that we should not panic but definately need to prepare. They did not sugar coat anything, in my opinion. I would say they came accross as being very serious about the threat and they stressed that it is just a matter of time before it arrives. Their main concern seemed to be bf hitting Alaska, first, due to the migratory path of the birds. They kept stressing that people need to prepare for themselves and they advised them that there will be "3 waves" - each lasting up to two months and that you need to have enough food and water and med's, etc... to see you through. You can't count on the government, as those people will also be sick. Did any emergency service folks speak and in your opinion were they prepared with the right questions and answers? Any utility folks? Or Guard? I feel everyone was very prepared and they took numerous questions. I don't remember anyone speaking from the "utility companies" or the "guard", but they did have an executive from Publix Supermarkets speak as to the difficulty of obtaining and delivering food during a pandemic. Did the meeting sound to you like a poitical "look we warned you we've done our job so see ya after it's over? No, not at all....there was a lot of concern expressed about everyones' well being. How screwed are we in Fl? I feel Fl is going to be as prepared as it can due to the circumstances. I don't feel we are going to be screwed any more than anyone else :) A woman from the CDC did admit that bf has been transmitted from human to human but in very limited cases. They also stated that the main vehicle for transmission will be people stepping in bird poop and spreading the virus that way. It now remains to see how serious the residents of Florida will take this warning. As someone already mentioned, the HHS Secretary, Michael Levitt is attending summitts in every state on Bird Flu.
