Six hospitalised in Spanish Ebola scare

One more Spanish health care worker has been admitted to hospital for monitoring for Ebola, bringing to six the number of hospitalisations in Madrid, where a nurse has been infected with the disease.

In the latest case, a nurse was quarantined at Madrid's La Paz-Carlos III hospital this morning as a precaution, a spokesman for the hospital said.

Another nurse was admitted to the hospital with a fever last night and put in quarantine for monitoring, he added, confirming Spanish media reports.

Three other people had been placed in quarantine at the hospital for monitoring after a nurse who works there was diagnosed with Ebola on Monday in the first case of transmission of the disease outside of Africa.

The woman, identified by Spanish media as Teresa Romero, a woman in her 40s, had cared for two elderly Spanish missionaries who died from the virus following their return from west Africa.

Among the six people hospitalised was the woman's husband, who is considered "high risk".

Officials said they were monitoring as a precaution 52 other people, mostly health staff, who had been in contact with the infected nurse.

The medical staff is asking the wrong person to resign. The medical staff is protecting their own from liability.

They need to oust the hospital's director, Rafael Perez Santamarina.

When hospital staff is held accountable for their poor decisions ...maybe then they might start to think about the consequences of doing a lousy job of protecting the public.

And the hospital should be billed for the costs of contact tracing and the expenses of quarantining the individuals

infected through their negligence.

The hospitals need to give ALL their employees a written exam as to how they woud handle certain scenarios regarding possible ebola victims. Those that fail any part of the test need re-educating or should be fired. And that includes the executives.

It's amazing how fast a hospital can change their practices and procedures when they are notified they will be held financially responsible by being billed for their screw-ups. 

Hospitals, clinics, and ambulance service companies need more regulating when it comes to pandemics.

Medical personnel need standardized testing.

MADRID—A Spanish missionary who became infected with the Ebola virus while serving as medical director of a Sierra Leone hospital has been flown to Spain for treatment.

Brother Manuel García Viejo, 69 years old, was taken to Madrid's Carlos III hospital and examined by doctors early Monday, health officials said. He was feverish and dehydrated, and his liver and kidneys were severely affected by the disease, the Madrid hospital's head of internal medicine, Francisco Arnalich, said at a news conference. Brother García, a specialist in internal medicine and tropical disease, is a member of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, a Roman Catholic order that runs a charity for victims of Ebola. He had worked in Africa for 30 years, the past 12 of them as medical director of a hospital in Lunsar, in northern Sierra Leone.

His order notified the Spanish government on Saturday of his wish to be repatriated. On Sunday, a Spanish military plane was sent to pick him up.

This marks the second time Spain has brought one of its citizens home from Africa since the recent Ebola outbreak. In August, Rev. Miguel Pajares was flown to Spain from Liberia after being infected with the virus. The 75-year-old priest died five days later, after treatment with experimental drug ZMapp.
