Action taken on Ramnad mystery fluBy Express News Service - CHENNAI 16th April 2013 08:43 AM Health Minister K C Veeramani on Monday told the Assembly the government had taken substantial steps to combat a 'mystery fever' that has hit a village in Ramanathapuram District. Veeramani's statement came in response to a call attention motion made by some members of the House to the fever which has till now claimed four lives. Veeramani however indicated that the outbreaks might not be as mysterious as claimed. The motion was raised by CPM MLAs A Soundararajan, K Balakrishnan and R Annadurai, with Manithaneya Makkal Katchi’s M H Jawahirullah. "As soon as information came on March 11 that 31 persons in Andichikulam village had contracted a fever, a medical team was dispatched. The team is closely monitoring and treating people as and where necessary," said Veeramani. He added that all those with fever had tested negative for malaria and dengue, and four of the seven tested showed typhoid infections. Veeramani also said the government had taken up a number of disease prevention measures such as ramping up of mosquito control and eradication activities, provision of chlorinated drinking water and the continuous monitoring of vulnerable areas. The minister added that the illnesses of two children who had died in Valinokkam had been identified as viral in one and internal bleeding in the other. Neither had tested positive for dengue. |
