Albert or whoever we need to start monitoring visits to the Ebola site. I think visits will tell us that people are worried and trying to protect their families. It may also tell us how wide spread Ebola may be when the news and government choose to clam up.
Just an idea...we all need to know when to SIP! |

a) I'm already worried b) I'm avoiding TX and watching this through websites y'all don't have access to c) I'm basically SIP routinely, but I'm buying some extra stuff. Stock up on your pharmaceuticals, kids.

Can you shed some light on why these "so called" experts haven't slammed the borders shut on those infected countries? I'd like to know what your real opinion is. |

CRS, DrPH... you've said before that you were "not" worried about an outbreak here in the US, saying you were confidant that we'd squash it pretty quick... has something changed to make you feel differently? |

I can't speak for Chuck, but, if it were me, being pretty sure of containment would still have me worried a bit. So I prepare.

Our government is really proving to be inept! White House Secret Service let a guy stroll deep into the White House.....our air traffic control system is severely damaged by a lone, mentally ill individual.....Category A agents like anthrax & smallpox just appear out of nowhere..... I'm just vigilant. The index case in Dallas may not result in additional cases, I hope not. However, as more and more cases evolve in Africa, further dissemination of the virus into the USA is likely. It may be a bit like SARS, when Toronto was a regional hot-spot due to Chinese immigrants. Much of the city was on a state of lockdown until they could get it under control. I'm simply vigilant, I don't foresee a raging, out-of-control epidemic of Ebola in the USA. We have better education and communications in place than in Africa, so people are already watching news outlets & listening to warnings. However, more sporadic cases seem very likely, and some of these may trigger localized hotspots. Just watch events unfold, stock up on things you absolutely have to have (critical medications, not stuff like antibiotics which do not work against Ebola) and stay tuned.

I can't disclose any details, but I'll let you know as I know. Right now, I think the US government is "whistling past the graveyard," more hopeful than confident that we won't get further cases. If we get more than the single case, I think Congress will demand much stricter controls on travel from Africa. There is a political correctness aspect to this, and the USA has been lax in immigration when it comes to infectious disease. Immigrants have been bringing in measles from Latin America and Asia for a while, and as US parents refuse to vaccinate their kids due to fears about autism (unfounded BTW), our population has been seeing increases in measles, mumps, whooping cough and rubella that we haven't seen in many years. If I hear anything that I can share, I'll let you know.

Chucks head is on straight unlike the Government officials who need to clean out their belly button to see where they are going with this.

That's a really awesome idea flumom.
It would be good to gauge the hysterical reaction from the public. If there is a massive surge in hits we would know the public is freaking out.

Hi, just a comment about one of the questions above.
http://www.avianflutalk.com/forum_s/quote_.png - Originally posted by Jen147 CRS, DrPH... you've said before that you were "not" worried about an outbreak here in the US, saying you were confidant that we'd squash it pretty quick... has something changed to make you feel differently? Jen i know my views were the same as the docs but have changed recently. I think the western world has the means to keep Ebola a bay for sometime. We have systems which are awesome and medical facilities which can cope, However... If our Western systems are subject to multiple penetrations from allover the world. The system come crashing down real quick. If Ebola spreads through the third world which i hope doesn't. We wont be able to stop it from hitting the west. It may not be as bad as in Africa, but it will cause huge problems. Just think about international trade alone. Or maybe even worse think about fear created, plunging the stock-market into massive losses leading to financial crisis 2.0 If Ebola isn't slowed soon we will have a nightmare on our hands.

I hear what you are saying cobber. This is the first time since 2009 that I am taking steps to actually SIP. Preparing to SIP maybe is a better word. It's not easy with kids in school & a husband that works with the public in their homes (he's an Electrician)...
With H7N9 & MERS I was just watchful.. this one has me rattled.
My goal this month is WATER... I have always since day one been weak on water storage. Other than that... I'm looking into PPEs... I'm trying to be smart & price stuff out. Just discovered that coveralls on Amazon are very reasonably priced. Am not sure if this is the type appropriate though.

Does anyone know if the N95 face masks are sufficient for Ebola?

Nanook I am not sure but I am looking more at face shields. I might be thinking wrong... but I do not believe it is airborne so I like the face shield best. But will wait & see what others have to say. The coveralls I've been looking at include the head covering & you can pull that tight around the face so that only the eyes nose & mouth are exposed... yes those are all the entry points but if protective enough I'd rather have a face shield than a mask & goggles.

Ebola isnt airborne, but can transmit by droplet. So in close proximity an n95 will be sufficient. There are masks and there then are masks under this rating however.
Moldex 3200 n95 is good. the 2300 with valve is better. The Sperian NBW95V is another example. These masks are molded to fit the face well Be careful using the wire nose pinch variety as they don't seal well. Also think of latex gloves, semi sealed glasses, full covering clothing ie hoodie and keep your distance.

Cobber's right - gloves are a great idea because we touch our face constantly throughout the day, and you need to be thinking of protecting your eyes as much as anything (droplets can infect by contact with mucous membranes) but distance is your biggest friend.

Similar to the ones we use at work. Great for blood splatters and droplets, and easy to disinfect
