It's April, it's been in the 70's and 80's here for the past few days, but we have a cold front here now, going to be in the 40's again tomorrow. People are planting their gardens around here and getting ready for summer. What is everyone working on for this month?

It's starting to warm up here again, 70's/80's ugh 90's...at times haha Think it might be the best time for me to hit up farmers market during my lunch break at work and pick up some herbal plants. Aside from that, I am good on first aid and otc, need some C batteries but I can almost never find them -_-. I'm glad my weather radio/flashlight/phone charger is solar/crank powered. Aside from that, looking for water purification tabs and convenient water storage for a 1 bd 825 sq.ft apt, and more food supplies.

Found a lot of cheap ammo. Snapped up a thousand 00 buckshot for cheap, and 3000 7.62x39 for $150/1000.
There is an amazing site where you can find ammo on the cheap. Magazines and reloading supplies too. If anyone wants it, shoot me a PM. I'm only doing this because things could get out of hand for a number of reasons, but I'm not going to post my secrets for any schmoe to abuse without being a member. |

Well we are due for a snow storm on Tuesday so no planting this week. I just got back from a vacation but with H7N9 and North Korea I am looking to go over my stores. Especially crystal bleach AKA Pool Shock and go over what I really need to get and purchase some so I can sanitize water.
Any ideas how to get radiation out of water in case the Little Crazy General decides to hit Alaska? |

Albert are we getting more hits since all the s has hit the fan? I have tried to get my friends to purchase ioSAT or similar but they all look at me like I am nuts! Oh, well hope I am!
I just think people do not understand that if Alaska is nuked that the winds will bring the radiation down through the grain belt of the U.S. and contaminiate our food sources. How long will our soil be contaminated is something I don't understand and maybe I am wrong about the contamination but seems logical. |

Dang just read Latest News guess I better get going on seeing what I need in preps! I am in pretty good shape food and water and I have all my 3 ring binders of instructions all up to date. I just need more bandages and tape and need to look for more holes in my meds.
Gee I really did not want to do this now but have no choice! |

The way the ABC news in Los Angeles is saying it, some American officials had said one mistaken gesture could cause an all out war. Are they talking about the b-52 drills in South Korea? Almost all my ESL students are from there and are back, and it makes me worry a lot about them and my friends and home-stay family in Japan since they are closer to the location. Seems like the whole west coast is gonna be on alert these next few days from the news perspective. I should buy some tarp while I'm at it for insulation purposes.

He's got that taepodong 2 missile, but I don't think they've miniaturized their bomb to the point that they're able to load it into that missile and fire it with any hope of it landing on U.S. soil. I believe they're still using the primitive gun type bomb, which increases both size and weight significantly. This is mostly saber rattling. I think we all know that. If he were to actually fire a missile and especially one tipped with a nuclear weapon, he's got about another day and a half to live. The NORK Air Force would last about twenty minutes, and after that, they're going to get to learn what a B52 can do the hard way. A lot of people in Seoul are going to get artilleried, but the ROK forces are more than capable of taking care of the NORKS while we pound them with B2's and B52's. |

I am definitely doing some type of garden this year. I know I have said that every year, but this year I am really going to do it. We are supposed to have really bad, unstable weather this next week as in the beginning of tornado season, so I guess I will plan.

Denver is on 2 days only for water on lawns and must water anything else by hand. But my mini spray in the morning on my vegi garden for only 5 minutes is better and less water than hand watering. I will start out with that and then go to everyother day to see if plants will do well.

We finally got our Berkey water filter for Christmas so I'm happy about that. We continue to add extra food/water each time we go shopping. We are in SW FL so hurricane season is around the corner. We did a little spring cleaning so we could see what we had, what we didn't need, what we do need....basically organizing. Seems like there is always something to do. Preparedness is a way of life...always working at it :)

Melody, congrats on the Berkey. I have a Berkey and extra filters along with arsenic filters due to the mines in Colorado. I am sure it will slow down the process but I have water pitchers to store water in.
You are doing well. I have meds to go over and see what I need but I am as prepped as I can be. I will always not have something that is for sure. Like you I keep working at it! |

hi Flumom,
I should get extra filters. It was so expensive but it came with 4 filters. There are so many things I need/want but only so much money :) Oh and I got a Katydid(spelling?) water filter for my bug out bag. The kids got their bug out bags ready to go. I was thinking about getting those water filter straws for each one of them or water purification tablets...I do have some for my husband's bag though. |

Melody, just looked last night at the straws. Be aware they do NOT filter out viruses! Only the Berkey Sport will do that. Yes, the Sport takes up room but if the problem is Flu you will need the virus protection. I have purification tablets also for the Berkey Sport just to make sure.
I just did a small BOB for my son's girlfriend at college she lives in Denver and I know he will bring her home. I put just Mountain House food and ioSAT pills in it because my son has water in his BOB and in his Black Box with extras in it. I told him to transfer all of his water into her bag to lighten his load He has a tent, Sleeping bag, sleep pad and lots of food along with esbit stove, fuel, and everything else he needs. I also have an emergency sleeping bags in his car so they can use that one on the ground and the 0 degree bag on top of them to keep warm even in very cold weather. The fact she can carry water weight will be a great help to him if they HAVE to come home by land. I just hope he can drive home but I prepare for the worst case. As for the extra filters...don't worry Melody I just over do everything...watched too many movies that made me a little nuts. From Berkey: The manufacturer suggests 2 methods to figure how long filters will last. The first method is: 1.Multiply the number of Black Berkey filters in your system by 3,000 gallons to get Total Life in gallons for all filter elements within the system. 2.Next, keep track of how many gallons of water you normally use in one day. This is Total Use. 3.Then divide the Total Life by the Total Use. This will be the approximate number of days your filter elements will last before they need replacement. 4.Next, calculate the future date to replace the filters. Write that date on a sticker and attach it to the bottom of your system for future reference. Example: If you had a family of 4 and each person drinks 1/2 gallon of water a day you would use 2 gallons a day. A two filter system lasts 6000 gallons. Divide 6000 by 2. This gives you 3000. That's 3000 days before you would need to replace your filters. 3000 divided by 365 days a year would be 8.2 years filter life! |

I never heard of the Berkey sport. I will check that out. Great idea about you making a BOB for your son's girlfriend. Let's hope for the best. Thanks again for all the great info.

Hachi that's a great idea for short distance communication. Especially if there is no cell service or electricity or something. I remember on 9/11, here in our area we had NO CELL service for a couple of hours, nothing, I am not sure if it was because we live near a military base or what, but no communication. At that time I worked on the military base and they shut it down, it was chaos, it took forever to even get off the base to go home, they were searching every single car on the base that was LEAVING the base. The following days/weeks forever changed life on the military base. Ok, I got way off topic here, but you have a good idea!

Thanks! I got the idea because two years ago, there was a 7.2 earthquake in Mexicali, Mexico, which borders Southern California, and I go to school about a two hour drive north of there and somehow, my college town got a bad jolt from it too and communications went down for a while. I had to be the calm one from my group of friends, they were crying and stuff. I found it a bit odd since where I am from, which is about two hours east of San Francisco, in the Central Valley, we don't always feel earthquakes due to the mountains surrounding us. However, down here in the Inland Empire, and those areas, the earthquakes seem rather uncommon. Yet me being the "norcal foreigner" as I call myself down here, was the only calm one. *I got off topic too lol* I wouldn't mind buying the ioSat tabs but I have no idea what vendor is trustworthy on Amazon as most have weird ratings and seller locations. Getting the water bob, at the end of the month when I get my next paycheck :)

We also have walkie talkies. I have a brother 4 miles away so we can communicate in case phone s go down or if phone are down and someone needs to go out to get something we can stay connected so we know what is going on. Great idea to have them.

@ Melody: My walkie talkies are so cute looking! Got them early! Thank goodness for Amazon Prime haha. They are "cellphone" small so they can perfectly fit in a pocket. Going to test the distance, this weekend. My, S.O. lives down the road from me, about a five minute walk, so we will first test that, and then from campus which is about two miles away, in a city area with possible interceptions from our university PD and other school walkie talkie users.
@Penham: I know I need to get some more prilosec, I get acid reflux on occasion. However, I get the prescription kind. Recently got a large tube of antibiotic ointment, generic Kmart brand, cheaper than Neosporin, works the same way. Sometimes being cheap is better than being picky. I also have a good amount of allergy meds, both Claritin otc, and benadryl. Also have hurt free antiseptic wash. Need some eyedrops, and I think that is it. I have vitamins, cough meds/accessories, ibuprophen. I'll look into what else I need this weekend since I got the weekend off of work. I also want to figure out how drugstore glasses work. Just incase my glasses happen to shatter or break, it would be good to have backups. I need some for nearsidedness but I also have astigmatism. My S.O is the same as me but my glasses are too strong for him. |

Hachiban, you got me thinking. I better get more Benadryl. I like the liquid kind. If someone's throat is swelling from some allergy I'd think liquid would work better...plus easier for my kids to take. I'll have to recheck my meds to see what I have.

Hey guys, slow your roll with the potassium iodide tabs. They don't protect your entire body from radiological exposure, just your thyroid. If you take them and don't need them will make you one sick pup. If you ingest an alpha or beta source, it's still going to hurt you, Na iodide or not. If you're going to go that route, get a Geiger counter. In your spare time you'll be amazed at the things around your house that are radioactive as hell, but totally harmless. |

Turboguy, great idea about getting a Geiger counter. I would like to know the most affordable but easy to use Geiger counter. I've been wanting one for some time but they seem to be a bit costly or too complicated. If anyone has any ideas let me know. Thanks.

Turbo is correct do not take the ioSAT unless a nuke has gone off and you are in the path of fall out!!! It will make you sick.
Snow Day! I am cleaning out my basement tomorrow and do an inventory of what I have and don't have. Will be going to Sam's Club this weekend and purchase. I have a list started so I will complete it tomorrow! Finally I will have my prepps in order!!! Only took 4 years!!! |

Sounds like a plan. I take a lot of medicines, so I read up on everything I take, I wouldn't take it anyway unless absolutely needed. I am the same with the medicines I currently take. I use a lot of common sense when it comes to medicines. I do have people in my family, who are iodine deficient. All we have here is a bunch of wind lol It's annoying.
Melody, yeah the liquid would be better for children and whatnot. I have medicine induced photo-sensitivity so I break out in little bumps and stuff, itches like crazy so the antihistamines help. |

I just ordered a Berkey as well. We moved a couple months ago, and I no longer have my well with a hand pump, but we now have a lake in our back yard (stocked with fish!), so I just needed a way to filter it.
I also just ordered more heirloom emergency seeds since my old ones were 5 years old. I'm starting over with gas cans and propane tanks since the moving truck would not let them on the truck, and I wasn't going to transport them 700 miles! I've already bought and stored 36 gallons of gas, 3 large propane tanks, and 20 Coleman lantern size ones. That's all I afford right now, but I'm planning on researching what fruit trees will do well in Tennessee and planting some this summer. We also need to stock up on ammo since we've used a couple thousand rounds on the range this past year. |

Susan T congrats on the Berkey perfect for lake water. Everyone just be aware that you have to PRIME a Berkey. Get on the web site and get the instuctions. If you are like me and not using the Berkey until TSHTF you need to set it up ASAP if you can using tap water. Just read the instructions you will understand.
I have it in my head what needs to be done if I can when TSHTF the first is to prime my Berkey the next is to fill all my water containers. By the end of this month I will have all my stores in order and everything up to date. I just ordered some medical gear like sterile gloves and disposible scalpels. I am going to get some absorbable sutures for internal organs. I already have regular sutures. Like I said I try to prep for the worst case. My neighbors daughter is a PA and she can do the needed repairs if she is around and my other neighbor is a Nurse Practioner. If nothing else they are good trade items. Living in Colorado we are limited on fruit trees. I have crab apples and am looking into some other bushes this summer for fruit. AMMO now that is an expensive subject. I need more but can I afford it? But I will most likely purchase since my son will need to practice along with me. Susan I just purchased 2 - 2 gal plastic gas cans at Walmart. I can handle them 5 gal is just too heavy for me. So I plan on just getting smaller cans. I have 3 propane but I have a solar oven and my fireplace insert to cook in also so I am not so worried about propane. We all seem to be getting back on the band wagon! |

Thanks Flumom! As always, you are a wealth of knowledge!
I just looked up fruit trees myself...check out gurneys.com to see what fruit trees will grow in your area by zone. I know, ammo is expensive. How much is "enough" though? I guess it is all relative, but I try to keep about 7-8,000 rounds for our rifles, and about 3,000 handgun rounds. Sometimes I think we have more than enough, sometimes I think we need way more for protect/bartering. Any thoughts out there? I'd love to hear what other people feel is "enough". |

We planted an orange tree and lemon tree 2 years ago and they aren't doing so good. I dont' have a green thumb at all. I try and try...I read up on everything and I keep killing my plants. I either over water, underwater, etc. I forget to water them or I forget I watered them already. ugh. I'm going on 46 and have been trying for 30 years lol...not much luck. My daughter is having better luck with the potted plants. She is only 13. I think I'm going to leave the trees and rest of plants for her to take care of. It's important to grow our own food so I better figure this out.

I actually did pick up some more OTC meds today and got all my prescriptions refilled for myself and daughter. I got several bottles each of generic mucinex and cough syrup, generic benadryl, ibuprofen, peroxide and all my prescription stuff like for the nebulizer, inhalers, eye drops and anything that had refills on it.
We are getting ready for a winter/thunder/tornado storm lol, and heavy winds and hail, it was 73 today and supposed to have ice tonight, go figure. We had thought spring was already here to stay.

I personally try to have about a thousand rounds per firearm. But understand that I shoot competitively for the Air Force so I sometimes have significantly more than that, so that's more or less my minimum. It also depends on what caliber. Example: If I find a whoopass deal on a pile, I'll snap a lot of it up. I have an AR15 and a AK74 chambered in 5.45x39 which was selling for about 100/1000 right up until about two weeks ago. I've got A LOT of that stuff. Bought cheap, stacked deep. People have been figuring out the stuff that's still around, so guns and calibers that used to be everywhere, now are not. Mosin Nagant rifles used to be about eighty bucks and 7.62x54r was about $40/440 rounds. Now it's hard to find the rifles and the ammo is starting to get high. Guns are about $120 and ammo is $99.88/440 rounds. It surprises me that more people didn't jump on those too. It's a significantly powerful cartridge that's reasonably accurate and cheap cheap cheap! My gut feeling is that by summer guns and ammo will start to slow down as long as the socialists aren't able to dance in blood from another unrestrained nut job in a victim disarmament zone. |

It still works really good. There are cheaper models, but this one just worked for me. You'll be absolutely astounded at the things in your house that are mildly radioactive. Bananas, granite countertops, and concrete are surprisingly radioactive. Microwaves and televisions aren't radioactive at all, contrary to what your mother told you when you sat close. Take it on a plane for good laughs. |

Melody, I get my generic Benadryl at Sam's Club. That is where I get most of my pain stuff and other over the counter meds. Big quantity at low prices. I just threw out old ibuprofen from 2010 so I am just getting less than I use to purchase.
I have just over 1K rounds for each caliber. But would like 3K each since I soon will have 2 guns per caliber. I figure if my son has a wife they will each need a gun and if they have 2 guns of each caliber then they need at lease 1.5K rounds if not more! I hope ammo gets cheaper if it does I am gettting a bunch more!!! Can't find 22 ammo anywhere!!!! Going to look at the radiation dector. Thanks Turbo. |

Melody, Dollar Tree carries all kinds of generics, made in USA for $1, we use them all the time and they work great. They have all types of cold remedies, generic pedialyte, muscle rub, lots of different things. They even have some name brand stuff like Tylenol and that type thing.
Dollar General also carries a generic Benadryl for about $2 a bottle, still much cheaper than the real thing, same ingredients.

Well, I went to Sams and got most of what I needed. I am now organizing all my meds. All or most of my food is freeze dry so I am set there. I bet I have maybe 12 months I hope. How do you judge how much people eat in bad times.
Water is necessary for my plans so I have made provisions for that unless the whole world blows which could happen...LOL! I am now just adding things my son might need in the future. I will never stop I guess. |

I did get a few extra food items today, a few boxes of the UHT shelf milk, 6 boxes of rice, several packages of dried beans, several boxes of crackers and I topped off my freezer with frozen meat and frozen fruit and I loaded up on fresh salads, fruits and veggies for at least a week (which I have been stopping and getting fresh every other day) and I will try to keep at least a weeks fresh at a time on hand now.
I plan on doing more shopping this weekend.

Bought those Tina's burritos today, 10 for 4$ at Stater Bros (Southern California). Also got snacks because it is good to have that. More of a comfort luxury food moment. Got my tradeables, sugar, flour, yeast, etc. I have plenty for myself too to make bread and other things. Got more of my lactose intolerance pills, and more TP. Random side note, today in my Japanese class (I'm not Japanese, or Asian by the way, I stick out like a sore thumb in the intermediate-advanced class lol), my teacher asked how many of us actually save their money, and I was the only one who raised my hand. She said I have an old soul type of personality for being a college student because I didn't play tricks on people or whatever else as a child haha. Hopefully, my language skills help me out one day, as well as my love of reading medical journals.
Going to farmers market this weekend to look for plants for my herb garden as well as vegetables. |

I bought a few bottles of orange and grapefruit juice, cereal, more rice, beans and a few canned goods today. Will pick up extras anytime I'm in a store now.
