High Path Avian Influenza has been confirmed in 53 hunter-harvested wild waterfowl at three sites in North Carolina.
These sites are in Hyde County on the Pamlico/Beaufort County line and a new site in Bladen County. These are the first wild birds in the United States to have Eurasian H5 HPAI since 2016. The positive samples were collected by USDA as part of its ongoing surveillance program for early detection of HPAI in collaboration with state wildlife agencies.
“These findings continue to support evidence that high path avian influenza is present in the Atlantic Americas migratory flyway,” said State Veterinarian Mike Martin. “Wild birds can carry this virus asymptomatically and potentially spread it to domestic poultry. We strongly encourage all poultry owners to follow strict biosecurity measures for at least the next 30 days, which is the time frame these birds are anticipated to be migrating through the state.”
“We have a substantial amount of poultry in Davie and Yadkin counties,” said Phil Rucker, livestock Cooperative Extension agent. “Not only do we have commercial operations but a steadily growing backyard flock presence. This threat can pose issues for both types of operations. Biosecurity measures are paramount.”
Those measures include keeping birds isolated from other people and animals in an enclosed environment. Bird owners should keep their flock away from ponds where they might encounter migrating birds.
“While sampling is occurring in the eastern part of the state, the Atlantic Americas migratory flyway covers the entire state. This means that all bird owners need to implement strong biosecurity measures and keep their birds in an enclosed environment,” Martin said.
This type of HPAI virus is considered a low risk to people according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, but it can be dangerous to other birds, including commercial and backyard flocks of poultry. HPAI is also not a food safety issue.
All bird owners are encouraged to know the warning signs of Avian Influenza and implement steps to protect their flock.
The warning signs of HPAI include:
• reduced energy, decreased appetite, and/or decreased activity;
• lower egg production and/or soft-shelled or misshapen eggs;
• swelling of the head, eyelids, comb and wattles;
• purple discoloration of the wattles, comb and legs;
• difficulty breathing, runny nares (nose), and/or sneezing;
• twisting of the head and neck, stumbling, falling down, tremors and/or circling; and
• greenish diarrhea.

Roni, about 5 or 6 years ago I saw a TV documentary on diseases. In it, a virologist was talking about manipulation of viruses for biological warfare and he said that if you have the money and resources you can "design" a virus. You can manipulate the incubation period, the onset of symptoms and the lethality. He was asked what a killer biological warfare disease might look like and he said that if he were designing it he would make one with a 14 incubation period during which the person was shedding the virus but asymptomatic (to ensure a global spread before it was detected), then a 2 week long illness phase (to tie up all the medical facilities in the other countries and divert their attention and resources), and then death with a high viral load on the corpse. 

Of course he said that the key to this was to be sure you had a sterilizing vaccine to vaccinate your own population before you released the virus. He also said that the way to distribute such a virus was to send 15 women around the world and to have them all stop in major airports and to go to the bathroom and use a lot of "hairspray". In actual fact this hairspray would contain the virus. No one would be any the wiser and you'd time it so they were all doing their hair simultaneously. Then the other bathroom users would all continue on their international journeys and within 48 hours the virus would be everywhere and still no one would be aware of it. 

Ever since seeing that, I've always felt a bit uneasy when I've seen a woman using hairspray in an international terminal bathroom!!!!!

Yeah remember when the nut cases used to say the US government was spying on everyone and recording everything you do electronically. And people would laugh and laugh at those conspiracy theory types. Well the laughing stopped when Edward Snowden showed the world that was EXACTLY what they were doing. Obama said they stopped doing it. He lied. Yeah those crazy conspiracy theorist LOL. A lot of woo woo out there but it's all not conspiracy theory, some is actual fact.
