New ones from Sweden, France (1st) and Scotland. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BA.2.86 or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BA.2.86 ; BA.2.86, also known as the Pirola variant, is an Omicron subvariant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. BA.2.86 is notable for having more than thirty mutations on its spike protein.[1] The subvariant, which was first detected in a sample from 24 July 2023,[2] is of concern due to it having made an evolutionary jump on par with the first appearance of the more contagious but generally less virulent Omicron lineage.[3][4] It is a mutation of BA.2, itself a very early mutation in the Omicron family.[4] BA.2.86 was designated as a variant under monitoring by the World Health Organization on 17 August 2023.[5] - Although previous exposure (via infection or vaccine) to COVID-19 is considered likely to provide some protection from severe disease from BA.2.86, its high number of mutations means that it may be able to partially evade earlier immunity.[1][3][11] As of late August, there had been too few known cases over a relatively short period to accurately evaluate its symptoms and severity,[1] but there were indications that it may be similar to other circulating variants: In three early cases from Denmark and one from Canada, the local authorities reported that symptoms had been similar to those typically seen in COVID-19,[8] none of the small number of globally known cases were reported to have died,[12] and in parts of the U.S. where it had been detected there had not been a disproportionate increase in hospitalizations.[3] - Media sources have used the colloquial name "pirola" to describe it.[13] The World Health Network having recommending using astronomy (given that field's plethora of names), the Twitter user @JPWeiland suggested the obscure Jovian asteroid 1082 Pirola "for its uniqueness" and the possibility of shifting the nomenclaure to Pi or Rho if needed.[14] DJ...Some questions; -Is BA.2.86 also detected in animals/is it likely to spread (more) in non-human hosts (mixing vessel-resulting in even more new variants) -Based on the very limited testing/sequencing is the real number of human cases with BA.2.86 still in the thousends or already in the millions ? (UK may have already 4 cases, US 5...so far detected...). -Is the main risk in immunity evasion-so people still may get infected after earlier infection/vaccination ? Or will it result/develop into more severe disease ? https://outbreak.info/situation-reports?xmin=2023-03-01&xmax=2023-09-01&pango=BA.2.86 or https://outbreak.info/situation-reports?xmin=2023-03-01&xmax=2023-09-01&pango=BA.2.86 only has 9 sequences...will get updated. Also the wiki-page will see (lots of) updates... |

BA.2.86.1 and other subvariants on the rise. Also lots of hospital cases with BA.2.86 and a risk of mixing with other CoViD-variants. Newer vaccines may NOT offer (enough) protection against (newer) BA.2.86 subvariants. Vaccines have no affect on those viral populations on the surfaces of mouth, nose and throat, and they can be re-transmitted back into the environment. Thus the "vaccinated" (it's not a vaccine) carry the same viral load as the "non-vaccinated. |

badger2, you do have a point - I think- in that in the initial phase of infection there is NO difference between vaccinated or unvaccinated. The upper respitory virus-parts will spread in both cases... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccine or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccine ; A vaccine is a biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a particular infectious or malignant disease.[1][2] The safety and effectiveness of vaccines has been widely studied and verified.[3][4] A vaccine typically contains an agent that resembles a disease-causing microorganism and is often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins, or one of its surface proteins. The agent stimulates the body's immune system to recognize the agent as a threat, destroy it, and to further recognize and destroy any of the microorganisms associated with that agent that it may encounter in the future. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRNA_vaccine or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRNA_vaccine ; An mRNA vaccine is a type of vaccine that uses a copy of a molecule called messenger RNA (mRNA) to produce an immune response.[1] The vaccine delivers molecules of antigen-encoding mRNA into immune cells, which use the designed mRNA as a blueprint to build foreign protein that would normally be produced by a pathogen (such as a virus) or by a cancer cell. These protein molecules stimulate an adaptive immune response that teaches the body to identify and destroy the corresponding pathogen or cancer cells.[1] The mRNA is delivered by a co-formulation of the RNA encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles that protect the RNA strands and help their absorption into the cells.[2][3] DJ, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRNA_vaccine#Advantages or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRNA_vaccine#Advantages I am not an expert...For me-as a consumer- the question is what the mRNA-vaccine/drug offers...As far as I know lots of studies indicate a lot of CoViD-(mRNA)-vaccines may limit (long term) illness at still limited risks. However if the newest vaccines still will be offering protection against newest variants of infectious diseases may be another discussion... DJ-I think Non-Pharma steps; ventilation, masks, social distancing etc. still may do a better job. However one needs public support for these steps-based on good and honest info...In many ways the CoViD-pandemic is/was also a communication disaster... |

As far as I understand https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_recombination or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_recombination is happening during viral reproduction in host-cells...So-not in the upper respitory traject. A.o. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zh6YkDcEBA or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zh6YkDcEBA indie_SAGE is making the point vaccines offer (some) protection -even against severe disease as an outcome of the BA.2.86 (etc) CoViD variants...However newer variants are better in spreading infection/evading immunity (after earlier infection and/or vaccination). DJ-My view; try NOT to get infected ! Lower viral loads by good ventilation, limiting social contacts...(If in a room less people stay for a shorter time it already may reduce risks of catching any kind of infection...open windows lowers further viral (CoViD, flu etc) loads...) To much energy is wasted -my view- in "fights" over masks, vaccinations...If people do not want to get a vaccine, use a mask...so be it...learn it the hard way/I hope to be wrong ! Better safe than sorry...I think https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_SAGE or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_SAGE and some others do a good job in trying to answer questions based on what is known. And-yes-we are still learning...we live in a far from perfect world ! ---------- In the estimable 's hands, BA.2.86 has the highest fusogenicity of all Omicron lineages, though it remains far lower than Delta. Fusogenicity is generally associated with more severe disease. and Following on from data generated by colleagues around the world, we show that BA.2.86 fusogenicity appears to be the highest of all Omicron lineages, though still well below that of Delta. Repair of the deletion H69V70 in the spike NTD is associated with impaired fusogenicity. DJ, "fuso-genecity" is the ability of a virus to spread from one cell to another cell...High fuso-genecity could see an infected host developing symptoms high speed...However a-symptomatic spread is also possible...some hosts may not get ill after infection-still spread the virus... |

Replying to @SolidEvidence I just realized that there is already a BA.2.86.1 sublineage with a mutation in this spot (L455S). There are only 4 sequence (from 4 different countries), but I bet there will be many more. This is almost certainly a class-1 escape mutation. Last hurdle. and https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/breaking-ba-2-86-news-scientists-alarmingly-discover-that-ba-2-86-variant-has-also-picked-up-flip-mutation-l455s or https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/breaking-ba-2-86-news-scientists-alarmingly-discover-that-ba-2-86-variant-has-also-picked-up-flip-mutation-l455s DJ, BA.2.86 (.1 etc) may become a major variant restarting the pandemic.... |
