“I can confirm that U.S. military and partner nation forces are undertaking military action against ISIL terrorists in Syria using a mix of fighter, bomber and Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles,” Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, using an alternate name for the Islamic State.

“Given that these operations are ongoing, we are not in a position to provide additional details at this time,” Admiral Kirby said in a statement Monday night in Washington. “The decision to conduct theses strikes was made earlier today by the U.S. Central Command commander under authorization granted him by the commander in chief. We will provide more details later as operationally appropriate.”

The strikes represent a major turning point in President Obama’s war against the Islamic State and open up a risky new stage of the American military campaign. Until now, the administration has bombed Islamic State targets only in Iraq, and had suggested it would be weeks if not months before the start of a bombing campaign against Islamic State targets in Syria.

The strikes come 13 days after Mr. Obama announced in an address to the nation that he was authorizing an expansion of the military campaign against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS.

http://www.examiner.com/article/the-russia-iran-syria-mutual-defense-treaties-the-western-media-missed Russia, Iran and Syria are supposed to have a treaty for mutual defense. An attack on Syria would be regarded as an attack on Russia and Iran.

Turkey does not want a Kurdish state in Syria and might decide "to stabelize" te borderregion with Syria itself. (In 2013 Turkey was close to protecting a turkish enclave in Syria).

Iraq and Syria border Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The last two countries are now involved in attacks on IS. IS holds area's close to the border with Jordan and Syria.

Israel shot down a Syrian fighter above the Golan Heights also today.

This situation is likely to escalate fast into a regional war.

http://de.ria.ru/zeitungen/20140923/269615850.html The US wants Russia to join the fight against IS. Russia already agreed on a declaration against terrorism from the UN security council. The UN will meet tomorrow on the fight against international terrorrism.
