Geneva - The head of the World Health Organisation, Lee Jong-wook of South Korea, underwent brain surgery on Saturday after suddenly taking ill.

In a statement posted on its website, the WHO said the 61-year-old director-general was operated on to remove a blood clot on his brain at the Cantonal Hospital of Geneva.

He was "currently recovering".

Lee took over as head of the organisation in July 2003, after working for the WHO at country and regional level, and at the Geneva headquarters for 23 years.

His illness means he will miss the 192-state WHO's annual assembly, which begins on Monday.

The five-day assembly is set to discuss the global reaction to the threat of bird flu, whether or not to destroy the world's remaining stocks of smallpox and Taiwan's 10-year-old bid to win observer status

Sam .. I'm right there w/ you on that ... I thought it was a sarcastic title and didn't expect the body of the posting to actually be one and the same!  Seriously ... I wish him well ... but they could have tweaked the title a little! Confused -k

I hear ya Ready Mom and Sam - I was all ready to add my two cents worth about someone needing a frontal lobotomy, until I saw it was a serious post.... Ermm Can't remember where I saw a longer article on it, but they said he was going to be out for many weeks and added something like "not very good timing."  Geeezzzz.....  he probably developed it from the all the BF stress.....
