The article states "Brazil is not close to its peak yet." 

This concept of a "peak" is ridiculous - when 100% of the population is vulnerable to a novel virus, there is no vaccine, and countries do NOT enforce super-draconian isolation/testing/contact tracing, you will have a "series of peaks," i.e. mountain range or sawtooth. 

Eventually, everyone either catches the novel virus and survives or perishes.  Halfway measures only free up hospital space, but the total mortality rate is the same over time.

Lowering the number of new cases is important, but it doesn’t mean the virus is disappearing. It suggests instead that social distancing has slowed the spread of the disease and elongated the course of the pandemic, said Pia MacDonald, an infectious disease expert at RTI International, a nonprofit research institute in North Carolina. The “flatten the curve” strategy was designed to help lessen the surge of patients so the health care system would have more time to build capacity, discover better treatments and eventually come up with a vaccine.

Getting past peak is important, Chernak said, but only if it leads to a relatively low number of new cases.

“This absolutely does not mean the pandemic is nearing an end,” MacDonald said. “Once you get past the peak, it’s not over until it’s over. It’s just the starting time for the rest of the response.”

That's ok, Carbon.  As the GOO tells us: A quick dose of fish-tank cleaner and a syringe full of lysol will shift the virus.  Curing the patient by killing them only looks extreme.  After all, the virus dies with them.

Hospitals in Brazil's São Paulo 'near collapse'

I guess there were collapses in Iran's hospital system but they were kept quiet, so this might be the first collapsing system we have news of.
