Bulgaria Says Bird Flu Scandal Rocks Romania, Threat Bigger than Ever
Politics: 25 May 2006, Thursday.
The bird flu threat that hangs over Bulgaria is bigger than ever, veterinary officials from Bulgaria's Danube port Russe claim. In the word's of Russe Veterinary Service head a Romanian poultry factory has culled and sold poultry that might have been infected. The poultry now has to be found and destroyed, but it is not clear where the products have been sold. Bulgaria, which has a 600-kilometer long border with Romania to the north, mostly along the Danube River, has reported no cases of bird flu in domestic fowl so far. Romania has detected 44 outbreaks of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu since last week, and culled all domestic fowl in dozens of communities in an effort to contain the epidemic. Preventive measures such as a poultry imports ban and regular disinfections at border crossings have been in force since last year's first bird flu outbreaks in Turkey and Romania. http://www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=64011 |
