CL,

The 18 infected is what caught my eye, I'm going to a cubscout pack meeting tonight and a father of a boy in our den is from Hungary and I hope he can still read his native language well enough to give me an idea of what this is all about.  I hope to have some info in a couple hours.

Dennis,

My friend said the same thing.  He said the story says the 18 people all were at a party and got ill.  Some are very sick with stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea.  It is interesting though that the story made the alert page.

Cruiser, sometimes I have wondered what I think you are wondering.  Certainly there are countless small groupings of people that suddenly get sick where it turns out to be food poisoning.  Yet this made the alert page as you pointed out.  Are some of these folks on such high alert because they have more information than we do and know to expect a serious outbreak of h5n1 in people at any moment?  I don't know of too many people or professions that are on top of things, even things they specialize in.  Yet, these people seem to have been on top of this.  Look up the region on Google.  These foks in Hungary have problems.  A lot of them.  I find it almost impossible to believe that they would be on top of it unless they had reason to believe it more serious than what we know here in the states.  I'm not saying that their government has been telling them secrets on the side so much as I suggest they get the real scoop from the neighbor up the road who gets it from their cousin on the other side of the mountain range.  Am I making any sense?

stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea.
........................................................
I think food poisoning happens quickly...sooner than they might become ill with influenza after attending a party.
But we don't have the facts on the timing...

CabinLass,
I guess we are conditioned here to not take any chances - which is good I think.  We only have to think back to this summer when an entire family in Indo became "infected" with actual bird flu which has turned out to be the most recongized incident of H2H AVI.  The world is a ticking time bomb and we are right in the middle of Flu Season.  My friend who translated the story said he wasn't exactly sure of the cause or source.  Also, we have seen other stories surface over infections that are already 2 weeks old so this story still has some potential until we get the full details.

Sheesh, I know this is getting to much for my mind to digest. Just what is up? I can't believe that Hisz. alerts would put up a report of pickle poisoning, but now even worse, babies are dying! I just keep telling myself not to panic, I have food... and will do what I can. Many more alerts like this though and I might feel very different; as I would think many other will too.

DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTION

Three Hungarians have been quarantined after becoming infected with
an untreatable [see comment below] strain of tuberculosis, index.hu
reports. However, the situation is yet to develop into an epidemic.

The WHO and the Red Cross say a serious epidemic is threatening
Europe as a drug-resistant strain of tuberculosis is spreading on the
continent. According to the organizations, there have not been this
many untreatable cases of the illness since the World War II.

In related news, Hungary will not be able to buy new machines for its
lung screening stations, because it has not been successful in
winning a Norwegian tender for development of this area. The average
age of equipment used at Hungary's 160 lung screening stations is 15
to 20 years.

more happening in Hungary.  This time in Nyul Hungary
they say it is not bacterial.  It is effecting 50 children(?) in day nurseries.
I don't know how a non-bacterial "food posioning" can get around between so many different cities.

The last line says something about being intimidated by the offical.  (not sure of the translation.

I have never seen so many types of illness in such a large porportion.

I wonder if the illnesses are being mistakin for something else. Or if they are just covering up what it really is.
I also was wondering why rsoe site has no more bird flu birds on it like it use to.
Cause the bf hasn't gone away. But the bf birds have?
Something isn't right.

But on a good note: I quit smoking cigerettes thought if i get the flu I wouldn't have a chance if i had lungs full of crap from smoking....Wish me luck...cause I haven't picked up a cig in a week. Bird flu was just the thing to get me to quit!!!!

Awesome and way to go on kicking the habit.  Try deep breathing 10 slow breaths when you get the urge - be strong, good luck.

A bakteriológiai vizsgálatok első eredményei negatívak. A betegség pontos okát a további vizsgálati eredmények ismeretében várhatóan a hét második felében - tudják meghatározni - közölte a tiszti főorvos.

Personally, I think this is part of a strain of a pesky Norovirus that is hitting hard in many places right now.  2 weeks ago a big outbreak in Toronto, other places everywhere reporting similar symptoms, now here in Hungary.  Cruise ships everywhere are dealing with mass outbreaks of this!  My 10 year old was down and out for 3 days with severe diarrhrea, stomach cramps, vomiting, low fever then 2 days later the wife goes down.  Guy at work out 3 days and counting so far with same.  (Midwest - Chicago area)   Stock up on TP everybody it is not pretty!

This is good practice for the BF since this virus is very contagious and easily transmitted from direct hand to mouth contacts.  Wash hands and any food prep surfaces especially the bathrooms and bedding of sick ones.  Stay away from infected people for at least 3 days after symptoms disappear and don't let them prepare food for at least 3 days after symptoms go away.   They can carry virus for up to 2 weeks!   Wash hands, wash hands!!!

A hatóság megtiltotta a sertéshús árusítását a megye teljes területén, a rendelkezés betartatásához a rendőrség segítségét is kérték.

DESCRIPTION
Calicivírus-fertőzést mutattak ki a vizsgálatok csütörtökön Kaposváron, a Kaposi Mór Oktatókórházban; eddig nyolc betegnél bizonyosodott be a fertőzés - közölte Papp Erzsébet, a fertőző osztályt vezető-főorvos. A fertőzésre a kórházban naponta végzett fertőzésvizsgálatat során derült fény - tette hozzá.

DESCRIPTION

I tried to get a machine translation of these last three alerts.  The translation is terrible, and my interpretation may be all wrong, but here it is for what it is worth.

I don't know if a fly can get bird flu. I did get a little chuckle out of that though. Maybe a surveillance camera would be better Wink.

Coronaviruses

also cause a range of diseases in farm animals and domesticated pets, some of which can be serious and are a threat to the farming industry. Economically significant coronaviruses of farm animals

include porcine coronavirus (transmissible gastroenteritis, TGE) and

bovine coronavirus, which both result in diarrhea in young animals.

Feline enteric coronavirus is a pathogen of minor clinical significance,
but spontaneous mutation of this virus can result in feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a disease associated with high mortality.

Mouse Hepatitis Virus (MHV) is a coronavirus

that causes an epidemic murine illness with high mortality, especially among colonies of laboratory mice.

Prior to the discovery of SARS-CoV,

MHV had been the best-studied coronavirus

both in vivo and in vitro as well as at the molecular level.

Some strains of MHV cause a progressive demyelinating encephalitis in mice which has been used as a murine model for multiple sclerosis. Significant research efforts have been focused on elucidating the viral pathogenesis of these animal coronaviruses, especially by virologists interested in veterinary and zoonotic diseases.

From the 16th November  Hungary reported by China ...................

Calicivirus infection sickens 243 in Hungary
www.chinaview.cn 2006-11-16 12:34:59

BUDAPEST, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- An outbreak of calicivirus in five hospitals in the Hungarian capital of Budapest and a western town has sickened 243 people since Monday, the National Health and Epidemic Prevention Agency said on Wednesday.

Ritok Emese, a spokesman for the agency, told the media 173 infection cases had been found in four hospitals in Budapest and another 70 cases found in a hospital in Nyul.

The calicivirus, which first hit Hungary in 2000, can cause gastroenteritis with symptoms of sickness, vomit, bellyache and diarrhea. People can be infected when they contact food contaminated by virus-laced feces or inhale flying contaminated saliva.

As the virus spread in the five hospitals, visits to patients are temporarily forbidden.

Experts believe patients with weak immune systems are prone to the disease. http://www.budapestsun.com/dailynews/bpsundailynews161120061.htm

http://english.hotnews.ro/29-bird-flu-hotbeds-left-in-Romania-articol_43053.htm      From Late June 2006

........................................................................................................................

Bird flu epidemic officially over in Romania  July 31 less than 4 weeks later .

The last bird flu hotbed in Romania was officially dealt with by Sunday morning, the Agriculture Ministry in Bucharest has announced. But experts warn that while Romania got rid officially of the epidemic that led to the culling of hundreds of thousands of flock this spring the risk of new new hotbeds appearing is not over.

Over 12,000 tests have been made to check whether the potentially deadly H5N1 bird flu strain appeared anywhere else in the country.

The Agriculture Ministry also announced that Romanian vets were continuing their activities of supervision of wild and domestic bird flocks. And the Animal Health and Diagnosis Institute continues lab investigations over probes received from around the country.

Some one million fowl were culled in the latest bird flu epidemic in Romania this year.

Detection and isolation of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza A viruses from blow flies collected in the vicinity of an infected poultry farm in Kyoto, Japan, 2004.

Department of Medical Entomology, National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Tokyo, Japan. sawabe@nih.go.jp

During the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza that occurred in Tamba Town, Kyoto Prefecture in 2004, a total of 926 flies were collected from six sites within a radius of 2.3 km from the poultry farm. The H5 influenza A virus genes were detected from the intestinal organs, crop, and gut of the two blow fly species, Calliphora nigribarbis and Aldrichina grahami, by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction for the matrix protein (M) and hemagglutinin (HA) genes. The HA gene encoding multiple basic amino acids at the HA cleavage site indicated that this virus is a highly pathogenic strain. Based on the full-length sequences of the M, HA, and neuraminidase (NA) segments of virus isolates through embryonated chicken eggs, the virus from C. nigribarbis (A/blow fly/Kyoto/93/2004) was characterized as H5N1 subtype influenza A virus and shown to have > 99.9% identities in all three RNA segments to a strain from chickens (A/chicken/Kyoto/3/2004) and crows (A/crows/Kyoto/53/2004) derived during this outbreak period in Kyoto in 2004. Our results suggest it is possible that blow flies could become a mechanical transmitter of H5N1 influenza virus.

Romania , one of their neighbours is the Ukriane and its the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea lapping Poland .  And Cholera .

Cholera in the ocean ................. and fresh water and next door to Romania

Discussion
Studies indicate that V. cholerae is a naturally occurring, ubiquitous organism in the environment in Poland. Human cases of infection with V. cholerae non-O1, non-O139 serotypes are more often associated with seawater, but can also occur in freshwater [5,6,7]. Previous studies of surface water contamination carried out in 1994-98 and 2004 in eastern regions of Poland, which border on Ukraine, revealed the presence of V. cholerae non-O1 strains in the water throughout the year, even in winter. Strains isolated from eastern Polish rivers also did not contain cholera toxin genes, but 40% were found to produce heat-stable enterotoxin NAG-ST, with varying haemolytic activity, and toxigenicity was shown in tests on animals. [8,9,10]

In Europe, infections with V. cholerae non-O1, non-O139 serotypes are rare, and sporadic cases are generally reported. Experimental infections in healthy volunteers and data from gastroenteritis outbreak investigations indicate that the incubation period is 10 hours in volunteers and 12 to 24 hours in outbreaks.Ouch The median duration of illness ranges from 12 to 24 hours [3]. Symptoms of V. cholerae non-O1, non-O139 infection include gastroenteritis if large numbers of the bacteria enter the digestive tract, and wound infections. Septicaemia is also a possibility, especially in infected patients who are immunocompromised [1,2,3].

The atypically high temperatures in the summer of 2006 provided conditions favourable for the growth of Vibrio bacteria in the environment. During such hot summer, routine testing of water samples from bathing beaches should be extended to detect the presence of Vibrio, due to the increased level of bacteria in the water.
